The Lethbridge and District Labour Council in partnership with local labour unions hosted its annual Labour Day barbeque at Galt Gardens on Monday to celebrate the achievements of the working class.

The event was on hiatus for the last couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and organizers were excited to be back.

“We’re back and excited to be back,” said Krysty Thomas, Lethbridge and District Labour Council president.

“We used to host it at the Kinsmen Park. But we thought we would bring it back to beautiful downtown Galt Gardens.

“Labour Day is a really important day for us. (We’re) celebrating the achievements that we made gains for the working class and there’s so much work that still needs to be done when it comes to working towards a fair and equitable society.

“But today we take a break and enjoy each other’s company and celebrate workers who are downtown here in Lethbridge.”

It was a group effort to put the barbecue on as the UFCW 401 supplied the food and the Public Service Alliance of Canada brought in the bouncy castle.

“So it’s a really team-joint effort to kind of put this on for everybody,” said Thomas.

“We chose downtown here too because we really want to service and support some of the under employed and families. It’s so good to see so many families here today enjoying the day.”

Thomas anticipated 1,000 people were going to be served on the day.
