Flags at City Hall have been lowered in honour of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and tribute paid to her by Lethbridge mayor Blaine Hyggen and city council.

Hyggen said in a Thursday statement “I, along with many others, have never known another head of state.

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, has been a steady and constant presence in our lives and today, after a reign of more than 70 years, we mourn her passing.

“Her unwavering commitment to public service has truly been something to behold and the level of her devotion to duty likely won’t be seen again. To most, she was a public figurehead but to those who loved her, she was also a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

“On behalf of City Council, I extend my sincere condolences to those who knew and loved her.”

Before the start of the meeting of the Community Safety Standing Policy Committee of city council, chair Mark Campbell read out the mayor’s statement about the monarch’s passing.

Councillors Ryan Parker and John Middleton-Hope wore black armbands as a sign of mourning at the meeting.
