A 37-year-old Lethbridge man accused of shooting another man earlier in the summer has pleaded not guilty to several criminal charges and elected to be tried by a provincial court judge.

Lethbridge lawyer Vincent Guinan entered the pleas Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court on behalf of the accused, Nathan Parker Spearchief, who attended court by CCTV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre.

Guinan told court defence needs time to go over some 700 pages of disclosure, as well as schedule a pre-trial conference before a trial date can be set, and the matter was adjourned to Nov. 17.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on July 10 police responded to a report of a shooting at an encampment in the 500 block of Stafford Drive South. Police found a 33-year-old man suffering from a gun shot wound. He was taken to hospital by EMS for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

Police said two men, who are known to one another and reside at the encampment, were involved in a verbal altercation that resulted in the victim being shot once in the leg before the other man fled. After speaking to witnesses the subject was identified and arrested without incident a short time later near the 600 block of Stafford Drive North.

Spearchief is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, discharge a firearm with intent to endanger life, unauthorized possession of a firearm, use of a firearm while committing an offence, possession of a firearm obtained by the commission of an offence and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Spearchief remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
