AHS says Melcor space safe; transition of programs will be smooth

Alberta Health Services says it will be moving programs from the Community Health Unit at the train station to the Melcor Centre in a phased approach when construction at both sites is completed.

In a statement to The Herald on Thursday morning, AHS said “we are aware that these changes will affect where patients access care. We will continue to keep the community up to date as this project progresses and will work closely with our clients to ensure a smooth transition to minimize any disruption to their care. At this time, where members of the community accesses programs remains unchanged.”

In response to safety concerns raised by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees on Wednesday, AHS says air quality testing, mould testing and Volatile Organic Compound testing in 54 locations throughout leased space at the Melcor Centre in June of last year showed no spore counts exceeded the acceptable range.

“A licensed remediation firm was engaged by Braemore, Melcor’s management company. In all AHS occupied spaces, there were just two locations that produced any traces of mould. One inside of a mechanical room, and one in a small corner area. Remediation was immediately undertaken to both areas to meet the consultant’s guidelines,” says AHS.

“The remediation of AHS leased space at Melcor Centre was completed in July 2022.

Final and additional testing of the remediated leased space was completed and was deemed a safe place to work,” says the AHS statement.

AHS also says it performed pressure testing of all the mechanical systems within ceiling spaces in AHS occupied areas to identify any potential concerns and that anything which was identified as possible issue in the future was rectified.
