Police investigating sexual assault at Chinook High School

By Lethbridge Herald on October 4, 2023.

Lethbridge Police are investigating a sexual assault of a 16-year-old student at Chinook High School on the westside.

Police said in a news release issued Wednesday, that the incident involves players in the football program, and occurred in a school locker room on Tuesday, after regular school hours.

“The subjects and victim are known to one another, this was not a random incident,” the news release states.

Police officers were executing warrants at the school Wednesday, and say there isn’t any risk to other students in relation to the incident.

The investigation is still in its early stages and as of Wednesday police had not made any arrests laid any charges.

“While we understand this is an extremely concerning situation, protecting the integrity of the ongoing investigation is our priority,” the news release says.

In the meantime, the school remains open.

A news release from the Lethbridge School Division states the division is co-operating with the police investigation, and that parents and guardians of players directly involved will be contacted by the school.

“At this time, all football-related activities have been suspended for the duration of the week, to allow for the investigation to continue, and to ensure all students receive appropriate supports,” the division’s new release states. “Further decisions regarding football activities will be made pending the outcome of the investigation.”

To protect the privacy of those involved, the division says no other details will be released, and it cannot confirm the nature of the incident, given the police investigation.

“Chinook High School continues to be committed to ensuring the safety and health of all students are of paramount importance. Chinook continues to make all decisions based on the social, emotional, physical, academic and spiritual growth of its students.”
