A southern Alberta man caught with child pornography has avoided jail, but he will be subject to a common law peace bond for two years.

Dakota Goodrider was placed on the peace bond in Lethbridge court of justice, where he pleaded guilty to one charge of accessing child pornography.

Crown Prosecutor Carolyn Ayre told court the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children received a report from Microsoft that one of its users had uploaded suspected files of child sexual abuse material. The information was forwarded to the Southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation Unit, which began an investigation.

“As a result of that investigation, a search warrant was granted and authorized for the residence of Mr. Goodrider,” Ayre said. “That search warrant was executed and a number of electronic devices were seized. Mr. Goodrider was arrested…and in an inculpatory statement Mr. Goodrider acknowledged accessing child pornography on the internet.”

Ayre said one electronic device contained seven images classified under the Criminal Code as child pornography.

Goodrider must abide by several conditions of the two-year common law peace bond, including that he pay $2,000 should he breach any of the conditions. He must report to a probation supervisor as directed and attend for counselling and treatment as directed by his supervisor.

He must reside where approved, and he is not to access the Internet to search for or view pornography and not possess or use any gaming device or gaming console that can access the Internet.

He can, however, access the Internet and make or share video files but only for the purposes of employment and education and if authorized in writing by his supervisor.

The charge was withdrawn after Good Rider signed the common law peace bond.
