City council approves 2024 tax bylaw

By Lethbridge Herald on May 15, 2024.

It’s almost that time of year again in Lethbridge – to check the mailbox to see property tax bills.

On Tuesday, city council unanimously gave second and third readings to the 2024 Municipal Property Tax Bylaw.

Property tax rates for 2024 have been set by the City and notices will soon be sent to property owners.

Bylaw 6435 sets the property tax rates to be imposed upon property within the Ccigty to raise required municipal revenues from property, as outlined in the operating budget and in accordance to Section 243 of the Municipal Government Act.

Each year, property tax rates must be approved by council.

The bylaw also sets the tax rates required to raise the requisitions for the Alberta School Foundation, the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Separate Regional Division 4, the Green Acres Foundation, and the Designated Industrial Property requisition.

All 2024 property tax notices will be mailed out on May 29 with a due date of June 28. For more information on how property taxes are calculated visit: http://www.lethbridge.ca/taxes.

Bylaw 6434, the 2024 Pre-Authorized Tax Installment Pre-Payment Plan (TIPP), was also approved by council Tuesday.

A property tax crease of 5.2% doesn’t seem like much to some but to others it’s just another nail in the coffin. These increases better not be spent on the frivolous expenditures of the past but on the priorities of the votes of Lethbridge.
