The inaugural Telus Wag and Walk was held on Saturday at Henderson Lake Park in support of larea animal shelters.
The Wag and Walk promotes healthy living, animal awareness and animal shelters.
“The beauty is the donations are non-perishable food items and pet supplies and all of it’s going to be donated to the shelters and everything from there,” said Denver Brewin, event coordinator and local Telus employee.
Dog walkers could also enjoy local vendors and food trucks that were set up throughout the park.
“We just want to get everyone to take their pets, get them out of the house, walk around the lake, enjoy the nice weather and just kind of promote some healthy living and pets,” said Brewin.
Telus has hosted an internal Wag and Walk for a number of years for its employees.
“I just thought it would be a good opportunity to invite everyone in the city and just try it on a bigger scale and see how it goes,” said Brewin.
Brewin considers a pet’s health very important.
“A lot of people have pets and they consider them part of the family and it’s very important that they’re treated properly, they get exercise, they have the right food,” he said. “There’s a lot of opportunity for people to learn a little bit more about pet health and everything.”
Pet owners can contact Telus My Pet for any health concerns they may have with their pets.
“You can actually call a veterinarian through this app or there’s actually a store there as well,” said Brewin.
Alanna Riva and Lacie Minor were at the event providing dog grooming.
“It is good to get your dog groomed very often because their skin and coat, you want to make that stays healthy,’ said Riva.
Grooming can check for skin conditions and other problems.
“If you have [a] dog that has longer hair, you start getting into just more mats,” said Riva.
“If you’re dog has lots of mats, they can kind of build-up skin infections underneath.”
Brewin anticipated there were going to be 150 dog walkers at the event.
