The Lethbridge Airport will be hosting the inaugural YQL Aviation Day Saturday to showcase a variety of career opportunities within the aviation industry.

Anthony Kish, airport electrician, spoke to the Herald about the event Thursday and said Aviation Day is a day for bringing awareness to aviation industry and the needs in it. With a focus on women in aviation and women in trades.

“When everybody thinks aviation, the first thing they think of is pilots and flight attendants. But there’s so much more that happens before the hanger door is open,” said Kish.

He said there are all kinds of skilled trades and skilled professionals that have to do everything on the front side before the pilots even show up and that is where the need is.

“Right now, the women in aviation are severely under-represented and that’s why this day is born, to bring awareness to that and the needs within the aviation community,” said Kish.

He said the event is built as a professional event, for people to show up with resumes, dressed ready for interviews.

“We’ll have some very amazing and talented speakers and some static displays so people can actually see different aircraft that potentially they could be working on or with,” said Kish.

He said various businesses will be taking part and all are looking for something different.

“All of the companies which you can find on the website, are looking for different roles from accountants to trades, to professionals to executives,” said Kish.

He said the need is all across the board on that, including pilots and flight attendants. When asked about the need here in Lethbridge where there is limited flights taking place, Kish said the need is not only here.

“It’s an opportunity to actually reach around the world. Everybody thinks Lethbridge is so cut off from the rest of the world, but you can get anywhere in the world from here, and you can see the world from here. And you can have an opportunity to work to make money while you’re seeing the rest of the world,” said Kish.

He said people may find an opportunity to merge two passions while working in aviation as it is the case for him.

“For instance, I’m electrician at the airport. I love everything aviation and I get to have two of my passions in one and it merges together. A lot of people think that you can only have one career path when really they can have the opportunity to have multiple passions in one,” said Kish.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and more information can be found at http://www.lethbridgeairport.ca/aviationday
