Housing starts in Alberta are up 18 per cent from the record-breaking first quarter of 2024.
The province led Canada from January through March, according to the Canadian Mortgage Housing Corporation.
Alberta, with less than 13 per cent of Canada’s population, led the country with more than 25 per cent of all housing starts through the first three months of 2025.
“Our government is working tirelessly to make the dream of home ownership a reality for Albertans,” said Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon on Tuesday. “We are clearing the way for more homes to be built faster to help Albertans find housing that meets their needs and budgets. After a record-breaking 2024, today’s housing starts numbers are just more proof that Alberta’s plan to build homes is working.”
From January to March there were 11,470 housing starts in Alberta, up from 9,744 in the same time period last year. Calgary had 6,271 of those, an increase of 16 per cent and Edmonton had 4,095 which is a 17 per cent increase.
Scott Fash, the chief executive officer of BILD Alberta, said Tuesday that the increase in starts shows builders and developers are continuing to respond to the higher demand for housing in this province.
“As an industry, we remain committed to working closely with the Government of Alberta to identify barriers and unlock housing opportunities that will enable us to deliver more homes for Albertans,” said Fash.

This housing construction boom is great for those that can afford these new homes. I seriously doubt it will help with our homeless crisis or a large number of Albertans whom can’t afford these new homes. Looks like there is very little on the market in Lethbridge for less than $300k with +$400k the norm.
