With the Nathan Neudorf recall petition signing period ending on Monday, a group of citizens plan to hold a rally for people who feel dismissed after not being able to sign the petition on Sunday afternoon.

Gaye Metz, organizer of the event, says she hopes this event will spark hope for people who may feel despair.

“We’ve got too many wonderful things happening to allow those particular negative influences to affect how we become.”

While there will be speakers and presentations from various groups, Metz was also inspired by a solution her community had during COVID-19 lockdowns which brought some light.

Each evening at 7:00 p.m. people would step out on their porch and bang pots and pans as a fun way to connect with others.

The initiative was so successful it lasted two-and-a-half years.

On Sunday, at 3 p.m., Metz says its bringing the tradition to Lethbridge, all in the name of reclaiming humanity and having a fun time, even if the world seems really bleak.

“I’m encouraging everybody to bring their pots and pans and their nosiest utensil and at 3 o’clock we’re going to bang our pots and pans and have a marvellously wonderful, noisy time.”

Metz adds that people who are unable to attend are more than welcome to bang their pots and pans on their porch and join in the fun.

Metz was part of the large group of people who submitted a recall petition, but were ultimately beat by Ryan Tanner, who, in Metz own words, proceeded to “sabotage” the petition by ghosting everyone.

She says while this may seem discouraging, it is important to honour those who were denied their right to participate in the petition and those who put in a lot of work to attempt at reclaiming the petition.

“All these people had incredible courage and commitment and passion to stand up for what is right, and they did a fabulous job. That needs to be honoured.”

The rally will be held at Nathan Neudorf’s office at 550 WT Hill Blvd South, beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, with tables for other active petitions along with Friends of Medicare and the Raging Grannies being on site.

Oh, my. I wonder what happened to the recall?

I think Mr. ‘I-can’t-recall-myself-recalling-myself’ Neudorf still owes us some answers about undermining their own legislation and democratic process.

Really pathetic

buckwheat

Now Sophie, you need to be reminded the 16 million in costs provided to Election Alberta could have potentially provided 485 EA’s to classrooms. However the Homer Simpson moment, DOH, doesn’t seem to register with anyone outside the blob.

SophieR

Who wrote the (wasteful) legislation with the sole intention of pumping the tires of separation?

If this government wanted to make education (or health care or anything else) work, they would. But they are designing these public institutions to fail so as to make way for privatization (and guess who the new owners will be?)

buckwheat

Ah come on Sophie. Single payer health care is a disaster, you know it and hear it every day from the coup crowd. So you are ok with recalls but not ok with voting and referendum initiatives. So you like direct democracy only when it applies to what you like. Got it. What do you think of Notleys comments about Nazi’s

SophieR

Your word-pretzel is indicative of trying to defend the indefensible, bucky.

I am a fan of participatory democracy.

SophieR

As for Rick Bell putting words into other people’s mouths … Really, bucky, you need to step out and get some fresh air rather than creeping around the subterranean rage maze that is the alt-right media.

biff

any chance we could tar and feather neudorf and tanner together?

buckwheat

How about tar and feathering the 24 that cost us 16 million in potential EA salaries on hissy fits. I suppose you’re all in when it is waste when you agree with the attempted coup.
