CP NewsAlert: Carney says support for U.S. strikes on Iran comes ‘with regret’

By Canadian Press on March 3, 2026.

SYDNEY — Prime Minister Mark Carney says he supported Washington’s strikes on Iran “with regret” over the continued decline of the rules-based international order.

Carney broke with most European allies by unequivocally endorsing this past weekend’s American strikes on Iran, which have since been joined by Israel.

He says Canada was not informed about the strikes in advance nor was it asked to participate.

Carney says “it appears that these actions are inconsistent with international law.”

Now that the military operation has begun, Carney says he supports the efforts to end Iran’s nuclear program and its decades-long process of state-sponsored terrorism.

Carney says the U.S. and Israel must “respect the rules of international engagement” and called on Iran to stop its strikes against civilians across the Middle East.
