Rutledge

1925 2013

Shirley Rutledge, beloved life partner of the late Les Nash passed away peacefully on December 27, 2013 at Extendicare, Fort Macleod, at the age of 88. Shirley is survived by her sister, Georgia Tomik, nieces Barb Tomik and Bonnie (Larry) Boulton, her cousins, Lorraine Elliott, Jean (Reg) O¹Sullivan and Bruce (Diane) Walker, dear friends Ann and Tom Barnes, honorary grandchildren Michael Barnes, Charles Barnes, Jana Collar and Jerry (Jill) Collar and their families, many members of the Nash family and many dear friends. Besides Les, she was predeceased by her parents, Melville Rutledge and Erma Jackman, her step-father Dick Jackman and brother-in-law George Tomik. Shirley lived in Fort Macleod her entire life. After leaving school she began her working life clerking at the Whitehall and Jenkin¹s Groceteria. She spent a year in Ontario and got her cooks¹ paper and then worked as a cook at the airport at Claresholm after WWII. She cooked for Les¹ bridge crew for many years and later sold Tupperware, clerked at various businesses and ran the concession at the Fort Macleod golf course. She loved children and was often called upon to babysit. Children were drawn to her kindness, understanding, and unconditional love and she was a positive influence in many lives. She always enjoyed meeting people and made friends easily and was known for her keen memory of the people and events of Fort Macleod. Shirley loved doing things for others. She and Les bartended many weddings and, as an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, she received a lifetime membership. She was generous with whatever resources she had and felt compelled to give a helping hand whenever she could. She loved to entertain and her door was always open. Although she did not travel a lot, she enjoyed a few memorable adventures including her year in Ontario, a trip to Disneyland and the Rose Bowl Parade and a trip to Australia in the 70¹s. She played cards, knit dishcloths and visited with friends in person and on the phone right up until her death. In recent years, as her health deteriorated, she progressively moved from her home to a senior apartment, then the Pioneer Lodge and most recently Extendicare. She made these changes graciously and adapted well to each move. She enjoyed getting to know the staff and felt at home. The family greatly appreciates the care and kindness Shirley received at the Pioneer Lodge and Extendicare. We also extend our heartfelt thanks for the excellent care provided to all of us by the members of the Ambulance and Emergency Room staff and the Doctors at the Fort Macleod Hospital and by the staff in the Continuing Care Unit over the past few years. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at EDEN¹S FUNERAL HOME, 2424-5th Ave., Fort Macleod, AB with Reverend Eras Van Zyl, Officiating. STEVE RIGO

Steve Rigo, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013 at the age of 74. Steve faced his lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis with strength, courage, and grace. Steve¹s greatest love was for his family. He will be dearly missed by his wife and best friend of 49 years, Maureen; his daughters Sherry Bradshaw and Barb (Gary) Nekich; as well as his cherished grandchildren Tyler and Brianna Bradshaw and Alex Nekich. When he was able, Steve loved to travel. His vacation home in Whitefish, Montana was a favorite destination, and he treasured the memories of time spent there with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing cards, golfing and dancing. Those who knew him best loved his quick wit and sense of humor. When Steve was around, laughter filled the room. Some of our most favorite me mories are of him telling jokes, especially those times when he would laugh at his own jokes. In these moments, there was not a dry eye in the house. Steve valued the circle of friends that surrounded him and loved the simple things in life. In the last few years, coffee with the boys at McDonald¹s was something he looked forward to every day. Steve braved the progression of his disease with remarkable resolve, a positive outlook, and a strong sense of gratitude. Steve cherished having the love of his life, Maureen, by his side and always expressed his deep gratitude to her for keeping him in the comfort of his own home. He is now in God¹s keeping, and the grip of his disease has been released. Stevie, you are one-of-a-kind. Knowing you and loving you was a gift. We treasure our memories of you. For the time we had with you, and will have again, you are forever in our hearts. We take joy in thinking of you moving freely and dancing in Heaven. Maureen asks that you save the last dance for her. A private family service was held at Mountain View Cemetery. In honour of Steve¹s memory a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4th Street South, Lethbridge.
