MACLENNAN, JOYCE
CLARADA
The family of Joyce Clarada MacLennan (nee Gill) is deeply saddened by her passing. She left us
peacefully at St Michael’s Palliative Care Centre in Lethbridge on June 30, 2014 at the age of 90.
She is survived by her 5 children: Gail (Albert) de Vos; Linda (Bob) French; Susan (Gerry) Baril; Gary
Allen; Cheryl (Clint) Fisher; ten grandchildren; twenty eight great grandchildren; sister in law Pat
Heppler; and niece Colleen.
She was predeceased by her husband Robert MacLennan; parents Bert and Ella Heppler; brother Glen.
Joyce was born December 18, 1923 in Champion, Alberta and completed her education in Lethbridge. She
married G.L. (Bus) Allen in 1942 and moved to the Bow Island area where her children were raised. In 1966
the family moved to Calgary where Joyce lived until 2005. She then returned to Lethbridge where she
resided until her passing.
Joyce was a devoted caregiver to her family and special friends. She always welcomed them into her home
and could prepare a full meal from what looked like an empty fridge. Her homemade pies were simply the
best.
She was employed by the Government of Alberta at “The San” in Bowness for many years. Upon her retirement
she became a proud member of the Bowness Seniors Centre. She loved to go camping in the motorhome to
special lakes in Saskatchewan and throughout the western provinces. Vacation tours to Alaska and the
Maritimes were fondly remembered by her.
An avid reader throughout her life, Joyce was devastated by failing eyesight; however, this became more
bearable by assistance from the CNIB with their Daisy Disc audio book program.
Joyce’s family is deeply grateful for the care and compassion she received as her illness progressed:
Pemmican Lodge staff and residents; Home Care nurses and aides; St Michaels Palliative Care Centre. We
thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
A private celebration of Mom’s life culminated her worldly journey. She has now embarked on a new
experience of peace and happiness. She was laid to rest at the Archmount Cemetery in Lethbridge.
McMartin, Jean Ellen (nee Elliott) a resident of Bethany Long Term Care in Airdrie Alberta passed away on
Wed. July 2, 2014 at 90 years of age.

years in Hamilton Ontario, leaving to live in Swift Current Saskatchewan when she married. She lived in
Taber Alberta for a while and then in Lethbridge, where she had a lengthy career at the Lethbridge
Regional Hospital and was an active member in the Royal Canadian Legion Women’s Auxilliary and the
Eagles.
Jean is predeceased by her husband Oren (Mac). She leaves behind cousins Tom Montgomery, Mattie (Gord)
Spencer, Lorraine Montgomery, and David Montgomery, all of Ontario, and Richard (Jan) Montgomery of
Crossfield Alberta. Niece, Dolores (Leo) Coburn of Climax, Saskatchewan and friends in Alberta and
Saskatchewan.A graveside memorial service will be held at Climax Saskatchewan, at 10 am, on July 16, 2014.

MEDVE
September 17, 1922 – Turulung, Romania
July 1, 2014 – Lethbridge, Alberta
MRS. MARY BERTHA MEDVE, of Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away July 1st, 2014 at the Chinook Regional
Hospital at the age of 91 years.
She is predeceased by her husband Bert Medve (1991) and her sister Helen Ramias (1963).
Mary is survived by her sister Erma Peters of Lethbridge and her brother Bert Schwartzkopf of Coalhurst.
Our mother will be greatly missed and always remembered by her sons; Albert (Pat), Douglas (Rita)
daughters; Margaret (Mel) Jones, Joyce (Bill) Erickson, Marlene (Jim) Juris, and Betty Lou (Bob) Riewe,
as well as her 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and
nephews.
Mary immigrated to the Coalhurst area at age 16 along with her mother and 2 younger sisters. Her father
had arrived 10 years prior and worked hard to purchase land and build a home for them.
At age 19, she married Bert Medve and settled on a farm just outside of Picture Butte. They farmed there
until retiring to Lethbridge in 1972. Raising 6 children, growing a huge garden working in the fields
along with other chores occupied much of Mary’s time. However she still managed to sew her 4 daughters
all their pretty dresses whenever a special event came up, crochet beautiful creations of all shapes and
sizes and finish large needlepoint pictures of Blue Boy and Pinky. Her talents as a cook were well
recognized by neighbors and friends. Her delicious crispy fried chicken and amazingly deep lemon meringue
pie graced the family table for many memorable meals.
Mary was a member of the former Order Of The Royal Purple Picture Butte Lodge #76.
Her retirement in Lethbridge was filled with gardening, socializing and grand-mothering. Humorously she
developed such a passion for baseball and the Blue Jays that no outside intrusion was acceptable during a
game.
A Private Family Interment will be held on Monday, July 14, 2014, followed by a reception for friends and
family at COUNTRY KITCHEN CATERING, 1715 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge from 1:00pm-4:00pm
