DONNA JEAN LOUNSBURY

1958 –2015

Donna Jean Lounsbury passed suddenly at her Lethbridge home October 4, 2015, with her friend Shasta by her side. She joins her mom and close friend Vera laughing together and watching over us all.

Born in Calgary Alberta, she was the first child of Robert (Bob) Cecil and Vera Jean Lounsbury, and big sister to Susan Dianne Baran and Robert Brock Lounsbury. Donna had a deep love for her dogs Gizmo and Shasta, but closest to her heart were her nieces and nephews: Darci Lounsbury (Heidi Germdrowner) and Mathew Philips; Danielle (Dani Banani), Lindsay (Boo) and Leah (Leah Beah) Lounsbury; and her great nephew and niece William Philips (Sir William) and Grace Philips (Gracie Goose).

She was the best aunt they could ever have and a huge influence. She received great love and respect back from them through her life. Donna had a long-term and close relationship with her sister-in-law Tracey. In her time Donna touched many people, and was cherished by so many friends. She was quick witted and funny; gifts that served her well as a youth counselor at Sifton House and as a Legal Aid Officer. On both career paths she gave back to humanity. She often made mention of the dry humour of the Blackfoot people – something she embraced as she grew through life. She loved the outdoors, camping and hiking. Donna followed the family way of hunting briefly in her youth when she harvested a gopher with a .22. The event so traumatized her she broke with tradition and never hunted again. Her favourite place was Vancouver Island – particularly the west coast and Long Beach. She tried to make at least one pilgrimage every year. She shared herself on many trips with her family to that magical place. A big piece of her will always be with us there, and we will all feel her presence in that wonderful place.

A celebration of her unique life will be held at the Pincher Creek United Church Saturday October 17th at 2 p.m. following a family graveside service.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Pincher Creek SPCA (PO Box 2647, Pincher Creek, Alberta T0K 1W0) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation (P.O. Box 2211, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 4K7).

Valerie Sullivan

1958 – 2015

Mrs. Valerie Sullivan, beloved wife of Mr. Dan Sullivan, passed away on October 5, 2015 at the age of 57 years.

Valerie Jane Wilkie was born June 2, 1958 in Nipigon, Ontario to Frederick Donald Wilkie and Lilly Doreen Wilkie. She and her two older sisters, Susan and Julia, moved to Alberta six weeks after Val was born. The Wilkie family resided in Nobleford, Milk River and then Lethbridge. Val attended Milk River Elementary School, Fleetwood Bawden Elementary School, Gilbert Paterson Junior High School, and graduated from LCI high school in 1976.

Growing up, Val always loved animals. From an early age, she loved horses, especially dapple greys. She took riding lessons in grade school and continued to admire them throughout her life.

In 1988 Val married the love of her life, Dan Sullivan. With her husband, Val raised English Springer Spaniels, showing them and training them in obedience. Val was assistant manager at Peoples Jewellers but then decided to change her career and pursue her love of animals. She joined her mother and sisters at Pet Parade, where she worked for 38 years, becoming manager and eventually owner. Her customers were her friends.

In 1990, Val and Dan welcomed their daughter Kendra into the world. It was their greatest pleasure to watch Kendra grow up.

Val loved walks in the coulees with her family and dogs, especially in the fall, enjoying the colours and crunchy leaves. Bird watching was another passion. She enjoyed gardening and her backyard was her private oasis, a place of beauty and relaxation. Friends and family were always welcome in that oasis, the site of many BBQs and family celebrations. Every season and holiday was celebrated, the house decorated with the beautiful crafts Val had made. Holidays were always a time when Val, Dan and Kendra welcomed family and friends for supper, laughs, and companionship.

In recent years Val pursued the photography of birds and nature, where her eye for beauty shone through. Waterton, Drumheller and Vancouver Island were her favorite destinations for holidays with family. With a heart of gold, she instilled a love of nature, gardening, animals, art and family.
