Becker, Wayne Martin

March 22, 1947 – February 4, 2016

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wayne Martin Becker of Lethbridge, Alberta at the Edith Cavell Care Centre on Thursday, February 4, 2016. Wayne is survived by his brother-in-law Edward (Eddie) Wendt, nieces Corinne Audy and Arlene Wendt, his nephew Russell (Rusty) Wendt and many great nieces and great nephews. Wayne was predeceased by his father Adam Becker, his mother Ida Becker and his sister Connie Wendt. A Celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday February 20, 2016, at the Coast Hotel and Conference Centre, 526 Mayor Magrath Drive, Lethbridge, Alberta.

Arelis “Reel” Van Egmond

1925 – 2016

Mr. Arelis “Reel” Van Egmond of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Ada Van Egmond, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Monday, February 15, 2016 at the age of 90 years.

Born in Holland, as a young man, Reel fought in the Indonesian War. After marrying the love of his life, they immigrated to Canada in 1953. Settling in Lethbridge, he worked at the dairy pool and then at Cambra Foods. He retired from there at 64 years of age and always said he was busier than when he was working. Dad really enjoyed music and sang in numerous choirs. He loved animals, the beauty of God’s creation, camping and gardening. He had a strong faith in God and was involved in the church. We lost an extraordinary Godly husband, father, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and friend – Heaven’s gain!

Besides his loving wife, Reel is survived by his three daughters Brenda (Gordon) Miller, Helen (Frank) Van Nistelrooy, Marion (Gary) Rupps; one son Brian (Lynn) Van Egmond; nine grandchildren Lana Miller, Tilly (Jeff) Quick, Jonathan Miller, Charity (Mike) Fleischhauer, Jenny Van Nistelrooy, Nikki (Herb) Arnott, Shawn (Michelle) Van Nistelrooy, Casey (Kim) Rupps, Courtney Rupps, Jason (leah) Butz; fourteen great-grandchildren; as well as family in Holland.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, February 19, 2016 at ST. ANDREW’S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1818-5 Ave. S., Lethbridge, with Reverend Hugh Jack, officiating.

GARTH DEAN FORSYTH, passed away in Cardston, AB on Thursday, February 18th, 2016 at the age of 88 years, beloved husband of Jean Forsyth.

HIRONAKA

Tomoe Hironaka of Duchess, Alberta, beloved wife of Shig Nakamura, passed away in Duchess on February 12th, 2016 at the age of 78 years. She was born in Raymond on July 3rd, 1937 to Kaisuke and Yoshino Hironaka. Tomoe received her education in Rosemary, Alberta and then from the School of Nursing in Calgary. She then went on to receive her degree from UBC in Vancouver. She practiced nursing in many different places (Brooks, Owen Sound, Inuvik, and Lethbridge), including many years with the VON Organization. Tomoe was a very caring person and gave selflessly of herself for the betterment and comfort of other people. She was small in stature, but incredibly energetic and had traveled extensively around the world with many people. She later lived with and took care of her parents, until their passing. In 2002, Tomoe married Shig Nakamura and moved to Duchess. Tomoe and Shig continued to travel and enjoy spending time with family and friends. She will be dearly missed. Tomoe was predeceased by her parents and brother-in-law Mitsugi Tsukishima. She is survived by her husband Shig Nakamura and his daughters, Kathy Nakamura (Rob Leslie) and their daughters Kiyomi and Kimiko of Ottawa, Gayle Nakamura (Matt Anderson) of Calgary, and Naomi Nakamura (Mike Wick) and their son Kael from Calgary; brother Tsuyoshi (Mariko) Hironaka of Rosemary; sisters Sadako (Hiroshi) Nishimura of Kingston, Hiroko (Chuck) Rowley of Port Moody, B.C., and sister Sumie Tsukishima of Lethbridge and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 23rd at 2:00 PM from the Heritage Inn, 1217- 2nd Street West, Brooks. Rev. Yasuo Izumi officiating. Interment to be held at Brooks Cemetery. PROKOPISHYN

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of DR. HAROLD PROKOPISHYN, beloved husband of the late Loreen (nee Davidson) Prokopishyn, at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Thursday, February 11, 2016, at the age of 85 years.

He is survived by his brothers Dr. Bill (Beverly) Prokopishin and family; Dr. Fred (Elaine) Prokopishin and family; his sisters Ann Virgin and family, Olga (Clarence) Leach and family; sister-in-law Joyce Prokopishyn and family; and his special friend, Marie Mclaren, who spent many hours with him in his time of suffering.

Along with his wife Loreen, Harold was predeceased by his parents Mary (nee Peesker) and Nick Prokopishin; brothers George Prokopishin and Andrew Prokopishyn; and brother-in-law Ken Virgin.

Harold attended elementary school at Winthorpe Country School and high school in Foam Lake, Sask. He completed three months at Teacher’s College in Moose Jaw, SK. then taught in country schools for four years.

Harold worked for one year as a traffic officer during the summers while he worked at obtaining his BA Degree at the University of Saskatchewan. He went on to graduate with a Medical Degree then worked for one year at a medical clinic in Saskatoon.

Harold and Loreen decided to move to Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A. where he obtained his fellowship in Surgery. After graduation, they moved to Lethbridge where he joined the Haig Clinic. Harold continued to practice there for many years.

Thank you to Murray and Leslie Busch for their kindness and time spent with Harold and to all the caregivers and Doctors for their compassionate care, especially his good friend, Dr. Eric Wilde.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Larry Hankinson officiating.

TOTH

JOHN TOTH, passed away in Cardston, Alberta on February 12th, 2016 at the age of 86 years, after a 14 year battle with cancer.

He is survived by Zellah, his wife of 64 years; his children Patricia (Don) Barton, Joanne (Stan) Shanks, Warren (Laureen) Toth, Colleen (Peter) Drew, Karen (Craig) Lefler; 17 Grandchildren; 22 Great Grandchildren; and his brother Joseph (Verna) Toth.

He is predeceased by his parents; siblings Mike, Mary, Kathleen, Steve, Helen and Anna; his infant daughter Anita Kathleen, and granddaughter Melisa Christensen.

John was born October 25th, 1929 in Guernsey, Saskatchewan to Mihaly and Maria (Kerger) Toth. As a youth he moved from Saskatchewan to Diamond City, and then later to Lethbridge where he would meet Zellah and raise their family.

At age 17 John began working on the Canadian Pacific Railroad where he later became known by his peers as the “Velvet Throttle”. He worked for the Railroad until he retired at age 56, having worked for the CPR for 39 years. After his retirement John and Zellah moved to Cardston. They later moved to Coaldale and then recently returned to Cardston where they have lived until his passing.

John was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many church positions including as a bishop, a missionary, and mission president of the Hungary, Budapest Mission from 1994-1996. He also enjoyed serving in the temple for 21 years.

John did his best at everything whether it was work, family, or church service. He was outgoing, organized, and dependable. One of his hallmark traits was that he was never late. He was friend to all he met. He loved spending time with his family. He had nicknames for all of his children and grandchildren and they remember fondly how he would make up silly songs. He loved to cook and enjoyed making specialty soups. Being a good provider was important to him. He had special concern for his wife, whom he loved dearly. He always ensured she was taken care of.

Friends may meet the family at the Forestry Avenue Chapel, 4105 Forestry Avenue South, Lethbridge, on Friday, February 19th, 2016 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm or at the Temple Street Chapel, 355 3rd Street West, Cardston on Saturday, February 20th, 2016 from 10:00 to 10:45 am prior to the funeral service.

The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Street Chapel, on Saturday, February 20th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Private family interment to follow in the Cardston Cemetery by invitation only.
