MARIE ESTELLE LANIER

Marie Estelle “Estie” Lanier passed peacefully away in Lethbridge on July 14, 2016, at the age of 95. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Hanna Lanier.

Estie was born in Montreal on May 19, 1921, the only child of Josephine Germaine Hargreaves (nee Demers) and Charles Henry Hargreaves. She grew up in downtown Montreal, attending Trafalgar School for Girls and enjoying her membership at the Atwater Club. She loved life and loved the people in it! She cherished and followed with great interest friendships she made as a child, and at all stages of her life.

Montreal was a hub for Commonwealth air force activity in World War II. In 1943 Estie married Eric Richardson, an RAAF pilot who was listed MIA five months later. In 1944 their daughter Suzanne was born.

In 1950 Estie married Harry Evans, a physical chemist at McGill University. They moved west to Edmonton, where their daughter Sylvia was born in 1952, and then to Vancouver, where their son Charles was born in 1954. Harry died suddenly in 1956.

After Harry’s death, Estie moved back to Edmonton. In 1957 she reconnected with her college sweetheart, Charlie Lanier. They married in 1958 and moved to Lethbridge. At the end of the year their daughter Anne was born.

Estie and Charlie settled at the Lanier family farm near Wilson Siding. Estie transitioned from city to farm life by inviting their friends, children of friends, friends of children, and relatives near and far, to visit. Many lived on the farm for a time and became part of the family. These included several International Agricultural Exchange Association (IAEA) trainees. Estie and Charlie thrived on entertaining and were always ready to share a meal with lots of good food and laughter.

Estie is survived by her three daughters, Sue (Blaine Thacker), Sylvia, Anne, and her son Charles (Amy Enfield); her grandchildren David, Michelle (Karl Mini), Todd (Erin Park), Tynan (Mike Dwyer), Justin, Alex, and Emily; her great- grandchildren Amanda, Amara, Charlie, Cayman, Addison, Mason, Rowan, Rosie and Meredith as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
