He joined the army in 1939 and was sent to The Pas, Manitoba for basic  training. Following that, he was shipped overseas and served in the  United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy.
Upon returning to Canada in 1946, dad began working in infrastructure  construction, building roads and irrigation dams. Despite spending his  formative years in Saskatchewan, dad chose to make Medicine Hat his  home when the company for which he worked transferred him in 1950. He  invited Florence, whom he had met in North Battleford, to join him and  in November 1951, the two were married and started their lives  together in a small basement suite on the Flats. They later moved to  the southwest hill, and finally to their home of 50 years in  Crestwood. Dad spent 25 years working for Canada Post, until his  retirement in 1985.
