KUBIK

May 22, 1922 – Aug. 19, 2016

On August 19, 2016, our beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and friend, MARY MADELINE KUBIK (nee Zachar), passed away at the age of 94 years.

She is lovingly remembered by children Vera, Jerry (Dianne), Rick and Mary; her grandchildren, Natasha (Cam), Ben, David (Corrine), Jeff (Fa-Linn), Dan, Phyllis (Bill), Sam, Thea, and Brian; her great-grandchildren, Rosie and Katie MacDougald and Walter Kubik; her daughter-in-law Brenda, sister-in-law Josephine, numerous nieces and nephews, and her special friend Alice Heynen; her caregiver who often visited and brought a smile to her face.

Along with her husband, Mary was predeceased by her parents, siblings, son Jack, son-in-law Bill Mokoski (Vera), and daughters-in-law Susan (Rick) and Wendy (Jack).

Mary was born on May 22, 1922 in Bogdanovce, Czechoslovakia to Ludvik and Mary Zachar. When Mary was just eight years old she immigrated to Canada with her parents, sisters Annie and Katie and brother Michael. They worked as laborers on farms around the Lethbridge area during the spring and summer and then lived in Lethbridge in the winter. In November of 1939 Mary married Jerry Kubik Sr. and they had 71 years together before he passed away in 2010.

Mom’s passions were cooking, gardening, sewing, travelling, card playing, and reading. She and Jerry travelled all over the world but their favorite trips were to Duck Lake and Mission Lake, Montana for some fishing. Mom loved to tell us stories of her childhood in Europe and being a farm wife in the 1940’s and 50’s; and it was this, combined with her love of food, that led her to publish her own cookbook. Mom’s freezer was always full of baking and all of us have memories of her in the kitchen creating wonderful meals and baked goods.

In her later years Mom’s world became smaller as she lost her sight and hearing, but she faced all her health challenges with courage, grace, and always a sense of humor. Special thanks to the staff at Extendicare Fairmont for their wonderful care in Mom’s last days.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Tuesday August 23, 2016 at 7:00 P.M.with Francis & Cybele Noronha officiating.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 2405-12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Wednesday August 24 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Kevin Tumback celebrating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the CNIB, #100, 410 Stafford Drive South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 2L2 and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Box 2211, Lethbridge, AB T1J 4K7.

Be at peace Mom.
