MARJORIE MARKS

1928 – October 20, 2016

Marjorie Marks, beloved wife of the late Art Marks, passed away on October 20, 2016 at Swan Valley Lodge in Creston, BC.

Marj was born in 1928 in Vulcan, AB. After attending school at Milo, she went to work at the Vulcan hospital as an assistant cook and dishwasher. As well as helping Art on the family farm at Armada, she worked at the Armada General Store and sold Alberta Hail Insurance. She was a talented painter and avid gardener. In the winter you could find her curling, and in the summer Art and Marj ran their horses on the racing circuit in Lethbridge, Regina, Saskatoon and Great Falls, Montana. In 1973 they moved to Coalhurst and in 1991Marj moved to Creston.

Marj was predeceased by her parents Mabel and Earland Anderson; sister Marion Miller; parents-in- law Thomas and Annie Marks; Wendy Marks; son-in-law Peter Morley; brothers -in-law Henry Lindstedt, Joe Thomson, Bill (Hazel), Jack, and Fred (Dene) Marks; sisters-in-law Doris (Bob) Vaile and Phyllis (Allan) Beaumont.

She is survived by her daughters Myrna (John) Orsten of Lipton, SK, and Pat Morley (Jerry) of Peachland, BC; son Douglas (Mary) Marks of Milo, AB; grandchildren Marlaine Calhoun (Rodger), Trevor Orsten, Amberly (Paul) Vaughan, Kyle (Monica) Marks, Kelsey (Jeremy) Pletz, Kari (Steven) Habraken, Shaun (Melanie) Marks and fifteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Bernice Thomson and Earlene Lindstedt; brothers Charles (Ruth) and Wally Anderson; and brother-in-law Stan (Grace) Marks.

Arrangements by G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel. It was Marj’s wish that there be no funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Eva Wilson

1932 – 2016

Mrs. Eva Wilson of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Robert “Bob” Wilson, passed away after a short illness on Sunday, October 30, 2016 at the age of 84 years. Eva was born in Athabasca, Alberta in 1932. She moved to Lethbridge in 1949. She worked for Broder’s Cannery until she married in 1952. She then became a Homemaker and stay at home mother. Her hobbies were sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidery work. She was a great listener and even her daughter’s friends went to her to talk and get advice. Eva is survived by her daughters Kathy McNicol and Susan (Loren) Enzie; and her son by choice Ian McNicol (Frank Pictras); grandchildren Darryl (Meribeth) McNicol, Donald McNicol, and Edward (Megan) McNicol, and 4 great-grandchildren; sisters Laura (Frank) Johnson; sister-in-laws Doreen Potvin, Mary Potvin, Janet Johnson; brother-in-laws George (Barbara) Wilson and William (Rose) Johnson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Leo Cote

1926 – 2016

Leo Joseph Cote of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Velma, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Friday, October 21, 2016 at the age of 90 years. Leo was born on March 8, 1926 in Shaunavon, Sask. to Zephrin and Louisa (Roy) Cote. He attended the local country school until grade six. Leo developed his hardworking spirit at a young age with his first job lighting the fire at school in the morning. At age 14, he worked as a lumberjack in Kapuskasing, Ont. and as a logger in BC. In 1947 he met the love of his life Velma Hack and they married on August 13, 1949. Leo was a devoted and loving husband of 67 years to Velma and dedicated father to their 6 children. He was a good carpenter, building 3 homes for his family. A great outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Leo worked for the CPR as a fireman on the steam locomotives, then for Hamilton Floors and Bird Lumber. He received his power engineers ticket, working in Fort Macleod and Taber. He concluded his career after 23 1/2 years at St. Michaels Hospital tending the boilers. In his later years before retiring, he resumed his love of wood carving. An extremely talented craftsman he continued to carve award winning wild animals, carousel horses, and relief carvings. He started making native drums even after his eyesight started to fail. He then created songs depicting his life experiences. Leo will be greatly missed by his loving wife Velma, 4 sons Don (Linda), Ken (Rita), Richard (deceased) (Bonnie), David, 2 daughters Karen (Ed) Sykes, and Linda. He is very proud of his 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and one on the way. Leo was predeceased by his parents Zephrin and Louisa, brother Romeo, sisters Yvonne, Theresa, Annette and son Richard. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, November 7, 2016 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, AB. A Private Family Internment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the CNIB (100, 410 Stafford Dr. S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 2L2) will be greatly appreciated in memory of Leo.

The Lord in His wisdom called home His child OTTO SALOMONS, husband of Barbara Salomons, of Lethbridge, on Monday, October 31, 2016 at 70 years of age. He passed away suddenly surrounded by family and friends at the Foothills Medical Centre.

Otto is survived by his daughter Natalie and Jake van Schothorst and their children Chelsea van Schothorst and Kendall and Colin Feenstra, his son Shane and Kerry Salomons and their children Jesse and Chase, and 8 sisters and 5 brothers. He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother Larry.

Otto was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He cared deeply about family and never hesitated to help anyone in need. Anything he did was out of love for people and his Lord.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service at the EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH OF LETHBRIDGE – Highway #4, just East of the 43rd Street Intersection, on Monday, November 7, 2016 at 11:00 am with Pastor Dave Acree officiating. There will be a light lunch to follow. A Private Graveside Service will be held prior to the Memorial Service.

SZELAGOWSKI

JOHN “JAN” SZELAGOWSKI passed away peacefully at St. Therese Villa on Friday, October 28, 2016 at the age of 91 years.

John was the loving father of Janet (Tyler) Cook and Barbara (Peter) Ziegler; grandfather of Jennifer (Michael) Brunelle, Cheryl (Charles) Smith, Ryan Cook, Kimberly (Ross) Ziegler-Morley and Stephanie Ziegler; three great grandchildren: Kayla, Alyssa Brunelle and Alex Smith.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Joanne “Jasia”; his parents, Stanislaw and Marianna Szelagowski; his siblings Stefania, Kazimierz and Janina.

John was born in Kowalewo, Gniezno, Poland on November 8, 1924. He was the eldest of four children and was raised in the city of Bydgoszcz. He served with the Polish army in Britain from 1941 -1947 and saw action in the war zones of France, Belgium, Holland and Germany as a Tank Commander. He achieved the rank of Lance Corporal. John was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion and in 2015 received recognition from the Polish Combatants’ Association.

John immigrated to Canada and landed at Pier 21 in Halifax, NS on June 11th, 1947. He was sent to Saskatchewan and worked as a farm labourer. In 1948, he went to work at Henry’s Bakery in Maple Creek, Sask. In 1949, he moved to Lethbridge and worked for McGavin’s Bakery as a cake mixer and later worked at the bakery in the Dominion Store. 1962 saw him switch careers and work as a power plant engineer at St. Michael’s Hospital. He obtained his third class certificate in 1965 from S.A.I.T. and in 1970 he became chief engineer until his retirement in 1989.

It was when John moved to Lethbridge that he met the love of his life, Joanne Bender and they were married in St Patrick’s Church on September 2, 1950. John was well known to family and friends for his generous nature and willingness to give a helping hand. His skills in multiple trades served him well whenever called upon to build or repair whatever came his way.

John was a wonderful husband and family man. He provided for his family both here and in Poland. He enjoyed baking, especially his famous “tortes” which became a must for special family occasions. His many interests included: travelling, gardening, bowling, fishing, socializing with friends and long strolls with Joanne.

In later years John was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Though his memory was failing he couldn’t forget his precious Joanne and never stopped asking for her.

John’s kindness and generosity will always be remembered by both family and friends.

A Prayer Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, November 4th, 2016 at 6:00 P.M. with Deacon Cliff Bogdan officiating.

A Funeral Mass will celebrated at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 – 12 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Kevin Tumback celebrating.

Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

THOMPSON

JOHN MCKENZIE THOMPSON, brother, cousin, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2016. Born in Pasadena, California on March 22, 1924 he lived most of his life in Spring Coulee, Alberta on the family farm that was homesteaded in 1902 by his grandfather, Rezin Thompson. He attended Magrath High School where he met, but did not yet date, his future wife of 67 years, LeVaun Matkin. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in the 99th Infantry Division during the Battle of the Bulge, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. Upon demobilization in 1947, he returned to Spring Coulee and began to court LeVaun. They were married on Oct 5, 1949 in her parents’ home in Magrath. For many years he farmed the Thompson homestead where he and LeVaun raised three children, Christine Ruth, Duncan Charles and Mary Ellen. Johnny believed in serving others and worked on the Cardston District School Board before serving for three terms as MLA for Cardston Constituency under Premier Peter Lougheed from 1975 until 1986. He was a very approachable person, who formed many longstanding friendships but was also a great judge of character. He enjoyed gathering with friends, playing pinochle and golf. His greatest joys were his family and his Thompson heritage with its ties to the land. He was a hero and a patriot to both the U.S.A. and Canada. In accordance with Johnny’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. He will be interred in the Spring Coulee Cemetery on Saturday, November 5th with only immediate family in attendance. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his name to a veterans organization such as the Royal Canadian Legion or The National Association of American Veterans, Inc. in the United States.At the request of the family please refrain from paying condolence visits to LeVaun. Thank you for your kind understanding in this regard.

WICKENHEISER

VERONICA WICKENHEISER (DEIS) passed away in Cardston on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at the age of 96 years.

Veronica was born on June 12th, 1920. She had 8 brothers and 5 sisters, all deceased. She married Joseph Wickenheiser on September 5th, 1945. She is survived by her son Tim (Jean Vare); 3 grandchildren; Terra (Mike) Amen, their children Shaylynn and Ty; Kirk (Lauren Cornell) and their children Brenna and Jared; and Kim Wickenheiser

The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Cardston, Alberta on Monday, November 7th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.with Father Angelo D’Costa Officiating. Interment in the St. Stephen’s Cemetery.
