BERGER, Alvin Nelson

December 30, 1922 – Parkland, AB

January 28, 2017 – Claresholm, AB

The welder and the lathe sit idle, the shop lights are off, the antique cars and tractors are parked, and the accordion sits quiet in the house. After 94 years of a productive and full life, Alvin has left this world. He is survived by his children, Judy (Brian) Dahl, Terry (Wayne Fox) Place, Arne (Heather) Berger, Evan (Laurie) Berger, and Ardelle (Reed) McPherson; his grandchildren, Kara (Patrick) Wood, Brad (Janine) Dahl; Tova Place, Cale (Jen) Place; Kimberlee, Daniel, and Christine Berger; Talia, Brita, and Joel Berger; Tateum, Robyn, and Garrett McPherson; and great grandchildren Jackie Eibisch, Vivian Wood, Liam Greer, Peyton Place, Connor and Kennedy Beagrie.

Alvin was predeceased by his father Nils; step-father Iver Western; mother Ingeborg; brother Peter (Dona) and his wife Bernice.

Born December 30, 1922 on the farm east of Parkland to Nils and Ingeborg Berger, Alvin grew up and completed school in Parkland. In the fall of 1941 he enrolled in National Schools in Los Angeles, California to become a machinist. To put himself through school he worked before and after classes building and machining parts for ships and planes in the war effort. After graduation he returned to Parkland full time to farm and do custom work in the area. In 1949 he married Bernice Malchow from Stavely and they started their life together on the ranch southwest of Nanton, raising cattle, chickens, grain, and their five children. They had a great life together and celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1999. He was very proud of his family, and loved family events and any opportunity where he could visit with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Alvin resided on the ranch, working either outside or in the shop almost every day until he moved to the Silver Willow Lodge in November of 2016.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Nanton Community Hall (2204 18 Street, Nanton, AB) at 2 pm on Friday February 3, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Claresholm and District Palliative Care Unit in the Claresholm General Hospital in Alvin’s name, PO Box 2638, Claresholm, AB T0L 0T0, http://www.cdhealth.ca/make-a-donation.

BRADLEY

JANET DOREEN BRADLEY, our much-loved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend left us on January 24, 2017. Janet is survived by her children Shiela, Colleen (Doug), Keith (Tammy) and her beautiful grandchildren Dakota, Jace, Joel and Chloe. Janet was predeceased by her husband William Bradley in 1995. She also leaves many nieces and nephews across the Prairies, her sister in law Doreen Lougheed and many dear friends. Jan was a nurse for several years. She especially enjoyed her time working in labour and delivery; many babies born in Lethbridge had her by their side as they made their way into the world. Our mom loved good ice cream, watching the birds feeding at her birdfeeders, a challenging puzzle, the Blue Jays (whether they played well or not) and like any good nurse a bawdy joke. She had the best smile. We offer our deep gratitude to the staff at St. Michael’s Palliative Care for the exceptional kindness they extended to our mother and to us. If you so wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to St. Michael’s Palliative Care, or the Lethbridge Food Bank would make mom smile. Please join the family for a celebration of Janet’s life on Saturday, February 4, 2017 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at 1715 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge (below the Keg restaurant).
