CAMPBELL

ERIC CAMPBELL, beloved husband of the late Lil Campbell passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on December 29, 2017 at the age of 93.

He is survived by his two sons; Ken (Catherine) Campbell of Kelowna, BC and Mark (Sharlene) Campbell of Lethbridge. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Dalyce, Reid (Destinee), Caylee (Ken) James, Jessica (Dan) Chisholm, Nyssa Hjelm, Mike (Christine) Sphar, David (Jessica) Inglis and Kristie (Dan) Laux and 7 great-grandchildren: Dylan, Gavin, Brooklyn, Mason, Charolette, Brinley and Kinsley.

Eric was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on February 29, 1924 and was looking forward to his 27th birthday in 2021. He married his high school sweet-heart, Lil, in Lethbridge in 1950. They were married for 57 years. Most of his working life in Lethbridge was with McGavin’s Bread.

Eric loved life. He was the epitome of the hospitable quality that Cape Bretoners are renowned for and had a tremendous sense of humor, able to put a smile on the face of everyone he met which is why he had a vast network of friends.

Traveling was a big part of Eric & Lil’s life as they would make yearly trips with dear friends to a warm, sandy beach in the middle of a cold Canadian winter (this would have been a perfect year for that) or make a trek to their beloved Cape Breton in the spring or summer.

Eric loved music and loved to sing. Many patrons of Martha’s House, where he spent his last 11 years, would often get an impromptu serenade in the elevator.

Eric made a positive impact on many lives during his 93 years on earth. He will be missed by his family and many friends.

A Funeral Services will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. with Pastor Ralph Molyneux officiating.

KOTKAS

DR. LAWRENCE JOHN KOTKAS passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at the age of 85. Lawrence was born in Raymond, Alberta on January 30, 1932. He was the oldest child of Jack and Margaret Kotkas.

Following high school in Raymond, Lawrence completed training at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, and served in the reserves. He graduated with his B.Sc. & M.D. from the University of Alberta, and applied for the Canadian Foreign Service. He began his Foreign Service postings, both as an M.D. and a diplomat, in Ottawa and continued overseas in the UK, Finland, Denmark, and Switzerland. He received his specialty, the D.P.M. (Doctor of Psychiatric Medicine) from both the University of Leeds and the University of London while also teaching at both universities. Lawrence was in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a young man and often said that one of the proudest days of his life was when he graduated with his M.D. and received his Geneva Convention card for medical personnel.

Lawrence returned to Canada to live in 1966 and went into private practice in psychiatry. He was the first psychiatrist in Lethbridge and established the first general hospital psychiatric unit. He continued as the Chief of Psychiatry in Lethbridge hospitals for many years. Lawrence was a pioneer in the field of nutritional medicine and was a founding member of the Nutritional Medicine Today Society. His compassion, advocacy, and determination contributed considerably to a better understanding of both mental and physical health.

Words cannot describe the depth of knowledge that Lawrence acquired in his lifetime. His joy was in sharing his knowledge in ways that would benefit everyone he encountered. Lawrence was also a gifted musician, pianist, baritone singer and accordionist. He composed original music and lyrics for his family that we treasure.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Patti Clow, of 34 years, children and grandchildren: Kaaren Finlay, Kate & Jack; Melissa (Glenn) Price, Harrison & Nicholas; Alex (Diane) Kotkas, Jenise (Carsten), Shianne, Elise, Claire & Kai; and Kevin (Debbie) Kotkas, Ajax; Shawn Burke; Marla (Gord) Bloudoff, Ashley (Tom) & Braden.

A Memorial Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 3:00 P.M. A reception will follow. He also leaves behind his children, Denise (Jamie) Harding, Lorraine (Andy) Brayne, and Gary (Laura) Richardson, his grandchildren, Marc (Shari), Lindsay (Bill), Ryan (Michelle), Justin (Jamie), Tyler (Lindsey), Devon (Jocelyn), Brad, and Michelle (Johnny), and 9 great-grandchildren.

Len was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Elsie, and siblings Frank, Stella and Brenda, all of Worthing, England. He is survived by his sister Julie (Reg) Riddles in Ontario.

Len was born in Sussex, England, on Feb 28, 1934. He married Doreen Pilkington, in 1957 and along with their 3 children, they immigrated to Canada in 1973. Len worked for many years at the Lethbridge Brewery, until his retirement, and made several lifelong friends while employed there.

Len’s workmates nicknamed him “The Colonel” and Cory, but at home he was known as Dad, Grampa, and Papa.
