HAWS

With great sadness and a touch of relief, we announce that Zola Ann Johnson Haws, of Brooks, Alberta, has been released from the confines of her 96 -year -old body. Her spirit and cognition remained ever vibrant and youthful. Zola left this world on Thursday, July 12, 2018 in Brooks, after a somewhat arduous struggle. She was predeceased by two youngsters: Geraldine and Dean, by her husband, Ellis Dean Haws and son-in-law Gary Schmitz. She was also predeceased by her parents, Myrtle and Leith Johnson and six of her 11 siblings; namely: Gayle Johnson, Beth Gibb, Dean Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Julie Dalton, and Bryon Kaye Johnson. She is survived by five of her seven children: Dixie Schmitz, Jane Marsh, Joseph (Pat) Haws, Michael Haws, and Corrine (Max) Tateson. Zola felt blessed to have 19 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and posed for five, five-generation photos. Also surviving are four beloved sisters: Letha Lamb, Jackie Farnsworth, Peggy Hiatt, and Rita Simmons. Zola was well known and respected for her personal integrity, and her strength of character. She brought skill and talent to any project she touched; and could be counted on to face any situation, good or bad, head on with a stalwart spirit. She carried more genealogical information in her head than most, and was lucid and bright almost to the end. She loved her children, her family, and her Church adamantly. During Zola’s 96-year-old life span, she went from sleeping three or four deep in frigid-cold beds, to cooking for threshing crews at age 16, to raising four kids in a two-roomed shack with no amenities, to working at the lab at Vauxhall Foods and finally, to pumping out many crocheted afghans in between visits from the Tateson kids, while she lived in Newbrook Lodge, Brooks the past 10 years. Mom’s life was not without its challenges, but she remained graceful and gracious throughout. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 20 in two parts: The Church Service will be at 11:00 AM from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brooks Ward, (40 – 10 Street West) with a luncheon to follow. The interment will be in the Barnwell Cemetery, Barnwell, Alberta at 3:30 PM in the family plot. In memory of Zola, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Charity of one’s Choice.
