Edward Joseph Megantic Meaney

August 7, 1926 – November 4, 2018

A life filled with great adventure came to a close with the passing of Edward Joseph Megantic Meaney, age 92 years, surrounded by his loving family, at the Pincher Creek Hospital on November 4, 2018.

Born upon the tide in Canadian waters, aboard the RMS Megantic on August 7, 1926, as his Irish parents William and Bridget Meaney sailed towards a new life in Canada. His birthplace is registered as Quebec City, the ship’s first Canadian port-of-call. Throughout his life, the sea played a significant role from his childhood growing up along the St. Lawrence River, to his time as a seaman with the Royal Canadian Navy and Merchant Marines, to his world travels.

Edward, affectionally known as Ganty to his family and closest of friends, was predeceased by his loving wife Mary Louise Young in 1983. He is survived by his children: Brian (Cathy) Meaney of Medicine Hat; Maureen Meaney of Pincher Creek; and Colleen (Ron) Valin of Coaldale. Cherished grandchildren Shauna (Clancy) Meaney-Feller, Laine Valin and Joel (Sarah) Valin. Great-grandchildren Chancellor (Rebecca) Meaney-Feller and Brianagh Meaney-Feller. Great-great granddaughter baby Aurora. Sisters, Mary Greene and Gwen (Robert) Gallagher. He was pre-deceased by his wife Mary, parents, sister Patricia Whitworth and brother-in-law Gordon Greene.

Ganty lived an extraordinary life. He sailed the seas and lived in foreign lands, but loved the simple life found in his Canadian homes, first as a child and young man in Montreal and in 1961 an employment transfer brought him and his young family to Pincher Creek, where he resided in his own home until his passing.

His intelligence, creativeness and incredibly strong work ethic led to a remarkably successful 40+ year career in the petroleum industry, both in Canada and abroad. Work defined him on so many levels and once retired he missed the challenge that coincided with oil and gas problem solving, along with the many colleagues he befriended at work sites around the world.

More importantly, he was a good man, who loved his family deeply, mourned those who went before him, reveled in his Irish heritage and was true to his Catholic faith. His legacy will live on in those he loved.

Vigil Rights (Prayers) service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 958-Christie Ave. Pincher Creek. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 10 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Memorial donations in Edward’s memory can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #43 Poppy Fund (Box 131, Pincher Creek, T0K 1W0) or to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation (Box 2554, Pincher Creek, T0K 1W0). Condolences can be sent to condolences@edensfuneralhome.com
