Mary Balfour

1926 – 2018

Mary (May) Carnegie Balfour was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1925 and grew up in Falkirk, a short distance away. There, she eventually married John Syme and together with their baby son David, immigrated to Canada in August of 1949. They settled in Toronto, Ontario and proceeded to have five more, wonderful sons. The family moved to Lethbridge in 1967 when John was transferred by Molson Breweries.

John passed away in 1984 and six years later, May met and married her second husband, Dr. Sig Balfour. May and Sig spent twenty wonderful years together until Sig passed away in December of 2010. May thoroughly enjoyed her new extended family and was warmly accepted by the Balfour clan.

May was always active in her community, from working at Woodward’s to leading CGIT for years at McKillop United Church. She loved to golf and play bridge, and she was an active member of two coffee groups that met weekly, one of them since 1968, and the other at Macdonald’s that has been getting together for at least sixteen years.

May was always extremely proud of her family and would brag to anyone and everyone about her six boys. As the years progressed and her family grew, she was equally proud of her eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

May is survived by two sisters, Betty and Grace, and one brother Alex, all in Ontario, along with many nieces and nephews there. She also leaves behind her loving children: David (Louise) Syme, Bill (Trish) Syme, Jack (Karen)Syme, Gordon (Marcie) Syme, Stephen Syme, Russell (Ally) Syme, David (Mary) Balfour, Susan Hughes, John (Shelley) Balfour.

FOSSEN

Our dear Mum, MURIEL ROSA FOSSEN, beloved wife of the late Stanley Fossen, passed away quietly at home in Lethbridge, on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at the age of 95 years.

Mum grew up in England and during WWII, joined the ATS, Signal Corps. She met the love of her life at a dance while they were both stationed in Wick, Scotland. At the end of the war, Mum became a War Bride, embarking on the journey across the Atlantic to Canada. Mum and Dad were married for 67 years and they built a loving home and raised four children. We learned very early on that family came first and Mum was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dad passed in 2012 and Mum was lonely without him. We are sad to see her go and will miss her, but she got her Christmas wish to be with Dad.

Her legacy includes: daughter Pam (Doug) Mundell and children Mark (Kathy), Steve (Kelly), Scott (Annamaria) and Matt; sons Neal (Fern) and children Jennifer (John) Warren and Stephanie Parko; Ken (Connie) and children Philip (Bruno) and Jason (Jessica); Brian (Wendy) and children Clayton (Stephanie), Ryan (Brittany) and Sarah (Steve); as well as 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Bernard (Elsie) Fossen and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her loving husband, Stanley, Muriel was predeceased by her parents Reuben and Daisy Mynard, sister Olive Walker, brother-in-law Dale Walker and many close relatives.

A Memorial Service will be held at ST. AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 – 11 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Canon James Robinson officiating. A Private Interment will be held at the Northern Lights Cemetery in Edmonton at a later date.

KOENIG

ELMA KOENIG, beloved wife of the late Emanuel Koenig, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Palliative Care, on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the age of 100 years.

She was born in Irvine, Alberta on May 18, 1918, the youngest child of Daniel and Anna Wirsch. She married Emanuel (Manny) Koenig in 1941 and together they raised four children, Maxine (Donald) Sureman, Carol Koenig (Dennis Richter), Danielle (Larry) Smith and Denton (Kathy) Koenig. Initially living in Medicine Hat, Manny and Elma moved several times before coming to Coaldale, Alberta in 1961 and one final move took them to Lethbridge in 1988.

Elma loved nature. She particularly enjoyed drives to Cypress Hills, Waterton Park or the Crowsnest Pass where she would delight in the wildflowers, birds and animals that she might see. Her artistic skills and love of wildlife was evident in the beautiful ceramic pieces she created while a member of the LSCO. Manny and Elma had a beautiful garden, growing both vegetables and flowers in abundance.

Elma was a wonderful cook and her house was always open to anyone who wanted to stop in. Mom always wanted to feed you, be it a meal or some of her baked treats, and a visit was never complete without a cup of tea (“with just a bit of sugar to make the flavor come out”) or coffee with evaporated milk. Elma loved reading, especially anything to do with history, nature and her bible.

In addition to her four children, Elma is survived by three grandchildren – Kevin Sureman (Carla Pickering), Dan (Diana) Koenig, and Matthew (Nicole) Koenig as well as two great-grandchildren – Evan (Kaleisha) Sureman and Austin Sureman. She was predeceased by her husband, Manny, and her two sisters, Annie (John) Jans and Dorothy (Henry) Jans.

We would like to thank the staff of St. Michael’s Health Centre Long Term Complex Care for the wonderful and loving care provided to mom.

A Funeral Service will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Major Donna Bladen officiating.

In lieu of flowers and for those who wish, memorial donations may be made in mom’s name to the Salvation Army, 1302 – 4 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 0R4 or the St. Michael’s Health Centre – Palliative Care Unit, 1400 – 9 Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 4V5.
