MATTHIES

MRS. TINA MATTHIES, of Coaldale, beloved wife of the late George Matthies, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at the age of 95 years, following a brief illness.

Tina was born in Fuerstenwerder, Ukraine on December 17, 1923. In 1926, she immigrated to Canada with her parents, Heinrich & Maria Goerzen, and six siblings. Her siblings have all predeceased her.

Mom’s family settled on a farm northeast of Coaldale. Their family endured many hardships as new immigrants. After completing seventh grade, Mom went to work to help support the family.

She married her beloved husband, George, in 1945 and they farmed together until his passing in 1972. Together, they had five children: Margaret (Bill) Traber, Lynda (Ken) Rothe, David (Grace) Matthies, infant Laura (deceased) and George (Dorothy) Matthies.

Several years after Dad passed away, Mom moved to Coaldale to begin life on her own. The love of the farm never left her; she would often drive in the country or visit her son’s farms, always keeping interested in crops and cattle. Mom went on to work for Barons-Eureka as a home helper. She traveled the roads of southern Alberta to visit clients—many of whom became lifelong friends.

Mom was an avid volunteer. She assisted at the Coaldale Hospital as well as at her church where she was a leader in Pioneer Girls. She was also on the pastoral care team and visited many homebound members. Mom had a great faith in God.

In 2016, Mom moved to Sunny South Lodge where she resided until her passing.

Mom loved her family, extended family and friends, and she enjoyed many visits with each one.

She is survived by her four children and treasured grandchildren: Mark (Cori) Traber, Michelle (Scott) McJoynt, Stuart (Kari) Traber, Clayton (Nadine) Rothe, Shauna (Dave), Rob (Caylee) Rothe, Rhea (Jarvis) Plesman, Cody (Megan) Matthies, Brent Matthies, Norah Faye (Ryan) Matthies and Jessica Vreeken. She is also survived by her precious great-grandchildren: Avery, Jake & Annie McJoynt; Cameron, Kaitlyn & Shaun Traber; Sydnee & Anna; Lily Rothe and Daxton Plesman, and step-great-grandchildren Dani, Erinn & Carter McRae.

A Private Family Graveside will be held prior to the service.

A Funeral Service will be held at the COALDALE MENNONITE BRETHEN CHURCH, 2114 – 18 Street, Coaldale, AB, on Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Gary Burke officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Food Grains Bank are gratefully accepted: 400 – 393 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3B 3H6.

We would like to thank everyone for the love and respect they have shown to our Mom.

We will miss you so much Mom
