Joyce Arnold

1926 – 2021

It is with sadness and love that we announce the death of Joyce Arnold, beloved wife of the late Millar Arnold, on January 4, 2021, at Extendicare Fairmont at the age of 94.

Joyce is survived by her son Dalton (Diana); grandson Erik, of Lethbridge; son Bob, of Calgary; brother Bob Sproule (Cheryl) of Melfort, Saskatchewan; sisters Isla Lustig of Prince Albert, and Hazel Gordon of Prince George, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

She was predeceased by her parents Herbert and Jennifer Sproule, of Melfort; sister Dorothy Mather of Calgary and Shirley Glass of Prince Albert.

Joyce was born on the family farm west of Melfort, Saskatchewan to Herb and Jennifer Sproule. Because of severe allergies to farm animals, Joyce attended elementary school in Prince Albert, living with her Grandma Plaxton. Her family then moved into the town of Melfort and she was able to complete her schooling while living at home. In 1945 she moved to Calgary where she lived with Mr. and Mrs. Coombs while working as a pharmacist’s assistant at McDermid Drug. There, she met pharmacist George Willoughby and his family, and moved with them to Ponoka in 1947, where George managed Byrd Drug and Joyce worked in the store. After six months they all moved to Lethbridge, where George was a partner in Willoughby McDermid Drug Store. She began her studies at the University of Alberta in 1949 in the faculty of Pharmacy, but was unable to complete her exams due to illness. She returned to Lethbridge, and while working in the drug store, Joyce met former Mountie, Millar Arnold. They were married in 1951 in Calgary.

Joyce was one of the early residents on the second floor of the newly established YWCA Residence from 1950 to 1951, where she was an active participant in both social and community programs. After their marriage, Joyce and Millar continued to be active in the community. They developed lifelong friendships with their neighbors on 15th Avenue. Joyce loved to entertain friends and family.

When Joyce and Millar’s sons were in school, Joyce attended the University of Lethbridge, completing her B. Ed, and teaching at Agnes Davidson Elementary School for six years. She loved being a teacher and was sorry that her career was cut short due to her asthma.

Joyce and Millar loved to travel, first in a travel trailer with their sons, and later on tours to Australia and Europe and many wonderful cruises. They enjoyed a winter home in Palm Desert for over 30 years, where they hosted many friends and family. Summers in Lethbridge meant many hours enjoying golf at the Country Club and visits to their farm near Pincher Creek.

Joyce believed in community service and was active in both her church and other community organizations. She was President of the YWCA Board of Directors in the early 1960s and played a strong role as a Team Leader in the Building Campaign for the new YWCA in 1980-82.

Joyce was a beautiful woman who shared her kindness, warmth and generosity with so many. In her later life, she knew all of her caregivers by name, and listened with sincere interest to their stories about their families, remembering to ask about their children by name. She loved her years in Martha’s House where she enjoyed friends, old and new. She arranged bridge nights for the men and taught another friend to play crib. She will be missed by all who knew her.

A private family Graveside Service will be held, with a celebration of life planned for June of this year 2021.

Flowers are gratefully declined. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the YWCA Lethbridge and District, 604 8 St S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 2K1.

Mary Saruwatari

1925 – 2020

It is with great sadness, we announce that our Mom, Sueco Mary Saruwatari, affectionately known as Baba passed away peacefully in Taber on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at 95 years.   Mary is survived by her daughter Kathy (Richard) Kaga of Vancouver, British Columbia and son David (Bríd) Saruwatari of Carlow, Ireland; grandsons Conor, Declan and Ronan; special nephew Kerry Ishida; sisters-in-law Sady Tagami, Joyce Saruwatari and Jeannie Takahashi as well as numerous Okamoto and Saruwatari nieces and nephews and many friends that were like family.   She was predeceased by her loving husband Tak Saruwatari; parents Shinkichi “George” and Misu Okamoto; siblings Muss (Marion), Sam (Tatsue), Haddie, Tamo, Mitzi (Kichi) Ishida, Stum, Irene and numerous in-laws.   Mary was born in Saanich, British Columbia on November 16, 1925. She recently celebrated her 95th birthday, excitedly connecting with many friends and family members via Zoom. Family Zoom calls featuring a variety of special guests had become a weekly highlight.   Mom was a prolific and eloquent communicator. She regularly connected to generations of friends and relatives from near and afar via phone, email and snail mail. Her messages were written from the heart and she was genuinely interested in everyone. Mom read the paper from cover to cover and did the crossword puzzle daily.  She was a lifelong learner and a patient teacher – her knowledge was vast. She was a living history book. Part of her evening routine was watching Jeopardy.  She was not amused when it was pre-empted by sports or politics! Mary adored Alex Trebek and was reading his book at the time of her passing. Carefree childhood days were spent in Victoria but she considered Taber her home. She referred to it as the friendliest town in the west. Wonderful neighbours contributed to Mom being able to maintain her cherished independence. Living in her own home meant everything to her. Memorable trips to Bermuda, Ireland, Scottsdale and the west coast were perfect for someone with an adventurous spirit. Mom was a devoted member of the congregation at Knox United Church and occasionally the convenor of the UCW Christmas Tea and Bazaar. She wrote compassionate messages to help grieving families and regularly attended Bible Study. Prepping for the sessions challenged her to think and expand her knowledge but the part she treasured most was the fellowship shared with this very special group. An avid curler, Mom played in league games at the Taber Club and always looked forward to the annual JCCA bonspiel. After Mom stopped curling, she channeled her energy into cheering for Team Gushue. Mom developed many lasting friendships while working at Calgary Power and looked forward to socializing at the TARA (TransAlta Retiree Association) functions. She happily shared her yummy hemp heart cookies, peanut brittle and rice bags. Mom had a flair for fashion and much to her delight was frequently complimented on her No-Mi-No-U tights and her Scottish plaid. She inherited a love of flowers from her father and was especially proud of her 2020 “Friendship Garden”.   Mary Okamoto married the love of her life Tak Saruwatari on New Year’s Eve. We are visualizing their joyful reunion, surrounded by family and friends. What a perfect celebration ~ no masks, no social distancing, no hand sanitizer just lots of love, laughter and hugs!   Perhaps the greatest gift Mom taught us was to be kind – to try to make someone else feel special each day. She was an inspiration to us all. Our eyes are full of tears but our hearts are full of happy memories.   As a result of the restrictions regarding Covid-19 and the government recommendations, a private funeral service will be held at Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. Burial to follow at the Taber Memorial Garden. To  send condolences or to view a livestream of the service please visit our website at http://www.southlandfuneral.com and use the link that will be available on Mary’s obituary page on the day of the service. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Mary’s name may be made directly to the Knox United Church Memorial Fund, 4929 – 50 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 1H7 or to the Resident and Family Council Fund, c/o 4700 – 64 Avenue, Taber, Alberta T1G 0C6 (attention: Kerry Ishida). Arrangements in care of Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber. SIMPSON

October 17, 1933 – January 11, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of BARRIE LYLE SIMPSON at the age of 87 years. He died peacefully at home in Lethbridge, surrounded by his loving family.

Barrie was born in Vancouver, B.C. on October 17, 1933 to parents Percival and Zena Simpson. He had a special bond with his grandfather and learned his strong work ethic from him. He was employed by the B.C. Telephone company where he retired after 37 years of service. In his retirement Barrie enjoyed spending time on Kootenay Lake boating with his beloved dog Bailey.

He married Twyla Louise Bloom on November 8, 1963 in Nelson, B.C. They went on to raise their family in the small town of Riondel, B.C. He was always involved in community service and he was a big humanitarian.

Predeceased by his parents, and brother Wally Simpson, and survived by sisters Shirley Weins (and her daughters Sherri & Debby), and Marsha (Larry) Lambrecht (and their son Jason).

He is also survived by his wife Twyla of 57 years, son Bruce (Angela) Simpson, daughter Lorri (Murray) Simpson-Swan, daughter Shelli (Barney) Bothamley, daughter Tracy (Doug) Creig, daughter Karri (John) Claassen, daughter Marcy (Darren/Hoody) Hood.

A proud Grumpa to Clara Swan, Jennifer (Rob) Phillips, Amanda (Andrew) Love, Kristin Bothamley (Kevin), Justin Creig, Jarod Creig (Janaih), Megan Creig, Curtis Claassen, Madison Claassen, Tiffany (Erick) Canlas, Brittney (Jesse) Krenbrink and Taylor Hood (Jordan) as well as 14 great-grandchildren.

He was the rock of our family. He was not big on hugs but gave the firmest hand shake, which the grandkids would override with a big smooch on the cheek. Proud, private, humble and dignified, he was everything to everyone. Ever the problem solver, he knew each person’s strengths and talents and when to call on them in times of need.

Always a champion for the underdog, he never placed much value on social status. For him, integrity and being there for your fellow man was paramount. This belief system was instilled in his children and grandchildren and is his greatest legacy.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Barrie, donations may be made to Stars Air Ambulance (stars.ca/ways-to-donate/ab/)

A Private Family Interment will be held at Royal View Cemetery. A Celebration of Barrie’s Life for family and friends will be held at a later date.
