Richard Alan Ambler

1958 – 2021

With broken hearts the Ambler family sadly announces the sudden passing of Richard Alan Ambler. In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 14th, 2021, Alan lost his short battle to cancer peacefully with loved ones at his side.

Alan was born on June 13th, 1958 in Lloyminster, Alberta to Raymond and Helen Ambler. During childhood, he grew up on a farm south of Lloydminster and went to school in Rivercourse and Paradise Valley. He went on to work for TELUS starting by climbing telephone poles to fix lines to becoming Field Service Manager in Lethbridge spanning 35 years with the company.

At an early age he fell in love with motorcycles and luxury vehicles, and by 14 years old he had his own 1970’s Suzuki 90 bike. Later graduating to a Husqvarna, Kawasaki, BMW, then finally a Harley Davidson. Besides motorcycles, he had a passion for beautiful cars. One of his fondest memories was begging his older sister Sheryl to take her car down the gravel road 100 metres to the farm’s gas tank to fill it up, allowing him to drive her Mustang for a mere 2 minutes. Al was only twelve.

Al continued these passions throughout his life, as well as his love for water skiing in the summer, creating too many amusing memories to count, and skiing in the winter where he shared times with so many people including, later, his children, by teaching them those hobbies at a young age.

Al was epitomized by an attitude of both optimism and wit, tools he used to brighten everyone’s days, including his own, whether in the good times or the bad. He will be remembered by and will live on in the many stories that he shared during social events, large and small, in his characteristic peaceful and relaxed manner, punctuated by his own memorable chuckle.

A truly memorable man who touched many lives, he will be survived through his wife Anna, daughters; Maggie and Samantha, and sisters; Sheryl and Jeanine. But so many more family members, friends, and colleagues who had the pleasure of sharing memories with such a kind-hearted, witty, and hilarious personality.

A celebration of life will be held off until the summer where it can be held on the family farm in Lloyminster, Alberta.

As Alan had a love for motorcycles and the community that follows, he was also a volunteer for Harley Davidson demo days. So rather than flowers, the family wishes you to make a donation to the Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA), Lethbridge Chapter, Box 22030 Henderson Lake. Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada T1K2S2, or the Canadian Cancer Society under Alan’s memory, 325 Manning Rd NE #200, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5.

“A loyal friend laughs at your jokes when they’re not so good,

and sympathizes with your problems when they’re not so bad.”

BRADLEY ERICKSON

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Bradley Erickson share his sudden passing from a pulmonary embolism on February 9, 2021. Brad was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on May 18, 1969. He graduated from Coalhurst High School and then attended the University of Lethbridge where he completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts and performed in several major stage productions. He moved to Edmonton in 1992 to pursue a Master of Fine Arts (Theatre) at the University of Alberta and follow his Mom’s passion for the arts and literature. But instead, life circumstances and opportunities steered him in the direction of his Dad’s passion for vehicle restoration and all things mechanical which he developed into a satisfying career. Brad is remembered as a leader, an actor, a philosopher, a storyteller, a family historian, and most importantly, a dad. He loved skiing, camping, nature, mountain biking, rock concerts, FAST cars, and BIG bonfires. Brad was a deep thinker and enjoyed animated debates with his close friends. He also enjoyed spending time with Tristan and his friends doing everything from conjuring alternate realities in Dungeons & Dragons, to hosting lake parties, to planning quad & sled expeditions, to coaching their upcoming high school basketball team. Family was everything to Brad. Whether he was visiting his dear aunt or cherished cousins, talking football, music and driving with his nephew, or sharing special Christmas traditions with his sister and her family, he was right where he wanted to be. Whatever Brad was up to, he wanted Greg, his little brother and long-time partner-in-crime to be there. He was most proud of the cool collection of cars they saved from the crusher and of Greg’s initiative and success as he branched off on his own path. Brad’s favourite place was the magical world that he created for his close-knit family of three in their backyard forest at Mulhurst Bay. His muse Pamela and his son Tristan really were the center of his universe and he was always orchestrating their next exciting adventure. We will always picture Brad as free falling down a double black diamond ski slope with anyone who would dare follow or thrashing in the mosh pit at the next amazing rock & roll show. Brad is survived by his spouse Pam Watmough, his son Tristan, his sister Tracey (Dave) Driscoll, his brother Greg, his nieces Kelsey and Hailey, his nephew Layne and his aunt Shiron. Brad was predeceased by his mother Judy in 2010 and his father Gary in 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Lung Association of Alberta.

Chester Obadiah “Obie” Earl Archibald Ferris

August 2, 1982 – February 16, 2021

It is with profound grief and shock that we announce the sudden passing of Chester Obadiah “Obie” Ferris on Tuesday February 16, 2021 at the age of 38 years.

Obie was raised in Glenwood, Alberta. Except for a few short periods of time working or attending school elsewhere, he spent his life in Southern Alberta.

Obie was always up for an adventure and delighted in trying new things. He loved golfing and hiking, going to concerts with his friends, and he spent many summer days floating down the river with his kids and his friends. Obie worked hard his whole life, and though he never settled into one career, he enjoyed all of the different and various occupations he worked. Whether he was helping build or renovate houses, working concrete with the ‘Tollestrup Crew’, flying helicopters or, as in recent years, working on the McGlenn family farm, he could find the fun and the interesting in everything he did. But the truest joy he found in life was and always will be embodied in his four children.

Obie leaves behind his devoted wife Lacey (McGlenn), and their four children: Zona, Izack, Saphira and Kingston. He will be loved and missed by his parents, Brenda and Chester “Sonny” Ferris, his sisters Brenester “Brandie” (Greg) Sunley, nephew Jerrick and niece Gabriella; and Chessenda (Ryan) Harty; as well as his in-laws: June and Robert McGlenn, Jennifer (Edward) Pollard, and Meagan (Jared) Abrams, and their families.

He is also mourned by his half-siblings Hugh Ferris; Bill (Bridget) Swagar and their children Seranda and Reid; Tammie (Calvin) Haczkewicz and her children William (Ashley) Kiselicka and Patrick Kiselicka; Colleen (Bob) Ekland-Swagar and their children Garth and Kieran; and Steven (Sandra) Smith and their children Cheyanne, Kelsey and Courtney.

Obie will forever be fondly remembered by his numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many friends.

He was predeceased by his grandparents Earl and May Archibald, Chester Ferris, and Helen Howe, his aunt Judy Archibald, and his cousin Craig Alan Archibald. Right now, he’s very likely raising a glass with his best friend Jared “Joe” Carmichael while the two of them make plans to watch over us all for all the years to come.

Family and Friends are invited to call Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels at 403.328.2361 to book a time to see Obie on Monday, February 22, 2021 between 4:00pm and 8:00pm at the MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

A Private Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. The family invites those who wish to view the livestream at https://www.fhwebsites.org/YMB/obituary/CHESTEROBADIAHOBIE EARLARCHIBALD-FERRIS and scrolling to the bottom of the obituary.

HOWARD SKOUSON HICKEN

August 24, 1919 – February 16, 2021
Howard Skouson Hicken was born to pioneer parents, Ruth Skouson and Albert Hicken, in Raymond, Alberta. He was one of ten children and grew up on the farm near New Dayton, where he began his schooling. The Hicken family moved to Raymond where Howard finished school at the Knight Academy. He made lifelong friends known as the “S Men”, who fondly called him “Skous”. “Skous” was naturally athletic, excelling in track and field and basketball for the Union Jacks. Howard attended Olds College to learn the latest in farming and veterinary science. Howard was a whiz and being the kind of man who could do anything, he completed the two year college course in one year.
On June 1, 1942, Howard joined the service and became an Air Force bomber pilot in England. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for successfully completing 31 bombing missions. The London Gazette reported, “Throughout his tour Flight Lieutenant Hicken has shown himself to be a cool, resolute Captain who can be relied upon [and] displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty.” As one of the last surviving WWII veterans, Howard will be missed as an esteemed member of the community.
Howard was blessed as a young boy that God would always protect him over the land, over the sea and in the air. This proved true. He returned safely home from the war and fell in love with a beautiful gal from Montreal nicknamed “Whistlebait.” Howard and Ethel Wilson were married October 9, 1948 and moved to the farm. They were blessed with nine children and also helped raise two nephews. Howard adored Ethel and was her biggest fan as she played piano with The Raymond Canadians. Their huge family became “The Hicken Herd” and Howard said the best crop he ever grew was his family.
Howard was well known in the community and was a Scout Master, Rotarian, and avid Comet fan. He watched his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren play for the Raymond Comets and continued climbing the bleachers until he was 101 years of age. Howard’s favorite things included hunting, fishing, silver dollar pancakes, Kananaskis, Dutch Creek, horses, the Milk River Ridge, horseshoes, dominoes, Coke, numbers, sewing leather, weekly temple visits, cutting hair, reading, John Wayne movies and making Ethel laugh. Howard loved planes and flying and spent years building a Glass Air 2 airplane with his son, Tommy. Howard and Ethel served a family history mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City.
How can a man live for over 101 years and not make a single enemy? Howard’s Christlike love for every person he came in contact with no matter how they might appear to others, will live on as his legacy for generations. With Ethel by his side, Howard left this world peacefully and with the same grace he lived his life.
Howard was predeceased by his parents, siblings, daughters Peggy Baldry and Maureen Hicken and granddaughter Miranda. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Ethel Wilson Hicken; children Stephen (Darlene) Hicken, Joan (Bruce) Harker, son-in-law Roger (Peggy) (Karie) Baldry, Jeanne (Wallace) Stone, Thomas Hicken, Brian (Jackie) Hicken, Patrick Hicken, Michael (Tracy) Hicken; nephews Randy (Kerry) Hicken and Mark (Joni) McArthur. Howard and Ethel have 52 grandchildren and 126 great grandchildren.

Friends are invited to meet the family on Saturday Evening Feb 20, 2021 from 6:00-7:00 pm. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints RAYMOND STAKE CENTRE (2 N 200 W, Raymond). Please contact Salmon and Sons Funeral Home if you plan on attending the Viewing. Masks are mandatory.

A Private Service will be held on Sunday February 21, 2021 at 4:30pm, to view the livestream please visit Salmon and Sons website.

Lloyd Hickman

1945 – 2021

Lloyd Hickman passed away on February 16, 2021, after a brief (non-Covid) illness, at the age of 75.

Raised in the small town of Birtle, Manitoba, Lloyd joined the RCMP in 1966. In the early days of his career, he had the privilege of serving in many communities in Saskatchewan – Yorkton, Wadena, Kamsack, Ituna, and Balcarres. He was always very active in social clubs, volunteer fire departments, EMO, coaching football, teaching first aid, and other local endeavours. He was very proud to have been a member of those communities and had very fond memories of his time there.

From 1974-1987, Lloyd was stationed in Ottawa, where he worked in the Protective Policing Directorate. During that time, he served as the Operations Officer for the 1984 Royal Visit and as the Personal Security Officer for Pope John Paul during both his 1984 and 1988 visits. He also travelled across Canada and around the world with Prime Ministers and Cabinet members to major events.

In 1987 he was transferred to Alberta. After spending time as Officer Commanding (OC) St. Paul Sub Division and Officer in Charge (OIC) Sherwood Park Detachment, Lloyd and his family finally settled in Lethbridge in 1992. There he served as OC Lethbridge and Calgary Sub Divisions and OIC Southern Alberta District. Lloyd delayed his retirement in 2001 to take on the role of Officer in Charge of Security for the 2002 G8 Summit in Kananaskis. Lloyd retired from the RCMP in 2003 with the rank of Chief Superintendent. He continued his affiliation with the Force through his involvement with the RCMP Veterans’ Association. The RCMP family was always very important to Lloyd and he cherished the special relationships he had made throughout his career.

After retirement, Lloyd acted as a consultant and served on a number of boards, including the Chinook Regional Hospital Board, the Alberta Sport Recreation Parks and Wildlife Board, and the University of Lethbridge Senate. He also worked for ten years as a scout for the Boston Bruins and served a term on the Lethbridge Hurricane Board of Directors.

When not working, Lloyd loved to travel. He often had his next trip (or two) planned before he had even finished his current one. Portugal and San Diego were particular favourites. He had a big personality and loved meeting new people, as well as catching up with old friends.

Despite having been to many places around the world, Lethbridge was Lloyd’s home. He was very fond of this community and was immensely proud to have received a Key to the City of Lethbridge for his service.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carol, as well as his children Kerri-Lynn, Lisa, and Dean (and his wife, Eugénie); two beautiful grandchildren, Reid Thomas Lloyd and Felicity Grace; his mother-in-law, Linda Hunt; his sister-in-law, Constance Hunt (Ron Holdsworth) and brother-in-law, Richard Hunt (Marie Hunt); and so many great friends and extended family. He will be sorely missed.

A celebration of life event will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation (www.crhfoundation.ca) or the Friends of the Mounted Police Heritage Centre (www.rcmphcfriends.com).
