Greta Boere

1932 – 2021

Greta Boeré of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Anton Boeré, departed this life after a brief illness at Fort Macleod AB on February 22nd, 2021 at the age of 88 years.

Greta is survived by her children René (Brenda), Peter (Verne), Sylvia (Mark) and Valerie; grandchildren Adrian (Lisa), Robyn (Neil), Alistair, Dax, Austin, Blake (Nicole), Hanna, and great grandchildren William, Kaitlyn and India.

She lived in Lethbridge since 2007 and previously for many years in Edmonton. Greta was born Geertje Wilhelmina Rijkje Nieuwhoff in the town of Breukelen, Netherlands in 1932 and after surviving brutal conditions in the war years married Anton in 1956. They emigrated in 1958. She worked as a domestic aid to struggling families before her marriage and thereafter was a dedicated homemaker on four continents.

Greta, first with her husband, and later on her own, was active in charitable work through the Hope Mission and other organizations assisting the disadvantaged in Edmonton and, earlier, in Nova Scotia. Her compassion and kindness were appreciated by all with whom she had contact.

A private family Graveside Service will take place at 11:00 am, Monday, March 1, 2021 at South Haven Cemetery in Edmonton, Alberta.

With profound sadness we announce that Jean Christie passed away peacefully in her sleep at St Michael’s Health Centre on Feb 17, 2021.

Born in Regina Sask. she grew up on a farm near Colfax, moved to the U.K. for a time and returned west to nursing in Weyburn. She eventually moved to Lethbridge AB where she met her husband Hugh.

Raising her three children and running a household, she worked at Eaton’s and Greens shoe store. Jean enjoyed camping trips, golf, x-country skiing and was a lifelong member of the 5pin bowling association.

She is predeceased by her parents, Jim & Alice Barrett, and sister Margaret Bigg.

She was the proud mother of Linda Christie, Doug (Karen) Christie and Brenda (Dave) Howe;

Grandmother of Jim (Laura) & Roy Scarrow, Kate (Ryan) Vogelaar, Riley Black, Sarah Christie, John (Monique) Howe & Christie Howe; Great Grandmother of Joey Scarrow, Ruby Rosas, Ava & Oliver Vogelaar, Payton, Madison & Parker Howe.

Jean will be dearly missed but shall remain forever in our hearts.

Carol Marie Ens died on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021 from the overwhelming experience of Parkinson’s disease. 1941 – 2021
 Marilyn Jean Fletcher, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, farmer, crew cook, gardener, seamstress, philosopher, inventor, spiritualist and inquiring mind, passed away peacefully in Lethbridge on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at the age of 79 years.
 As a result of the restrictions regarding COVID-19 and the government recommendations, a private funeral service will be held at Southland Funeral Chapel, Taber on Saturday, February 27, 2021 with Shelly Bassett officiating. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Cecile (Roger) Jespersen; sisters-in-law Roberta Robson, Judy Plunkie and Arlene Lowe; former daughter-in-law Kathy Rempel, former son-in-law Daniel Derksen and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
 She was predeceased by her parents Chris and Jessy Riis, her brothers Jack Riis, Roger Riis and daughter-in-law Wanda Graber. She was also predeceased by Grant’s parents Ken and Wanda Fletcher, Grant’s brother Allen Fletcher and brother-in-law George Lowe.
 Marilyn was born in Bentley on November 12, 1941. The family spent time in Millarville before moving to Devon where Marilyn grew up with her two younger brothers. She moved to Olds to attend college where she met Grant. They were married on October 15, 1960 in Devon and moved to the Fletcher Farm, south east of Taber where they spent the majority of their married life.
 Marilyn was truly an incredible matriarch, as she simultaneously raised her children and helped raise all the grandchildren, fed many large farm crews and was an accomplished domestic engineer in its grandest form.
 In addition to life on the farm, Marilyn was a lifelong learner and graduated from the University of Lethbridge at the age of fifty five with a Bachelor of Science.
 Marilyn touched the lives of so many and she will be deeply missed.

Beryl Judd

1932 – 2021

Mrs. Beryl Judd of Lethbridge, daughter of Frank and Ethel Burns and beloved wife of the late Mr. Richard “Dick” Judd, passed away at St. Michael’s Palliative Care on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at the age of 88 years.

Beryl is survived by her son Trevor (Diana) Kinsey; grand-daughters Veronica (Gerald) Kinsey, Shauna Ford as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Besides her loving husband Dick, Beryl was pre-deceased by her parents Frank and Ethel Burns; daughter Gaye Sleightholm and her brother Raymond Burns.

The family would especially like to thank Betty and Doug Florence for their care and compassion shown to Beryl throughout the years.

NOREN

STANLEY LLOYD NOREN of Lethbridge, AB, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the age of 97 years.

He is the loving father of Bob Noren of Lethbridge, and Shari (Hank) Van Rijn of Coaldale. Beside his two children, he is survived by granddaughters Kelly (Sean) Hantke and Haley Van Rijn, along with seven great-grandchildren.

Stan was predeceased by: his wife of 70 years, Doreen in September of 2018 and grandson Joshua Costanza in June 2018 as well as his parents and siblings Ed, Carl, Clarence, George, Hilmer, Esther, Evelyn and Nina.

Stan was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Nels and Julia Noren, the second youngest of nine children. He met future wife Doreen at a local dance. Mom and Dad were often the first ones on the floor at any wedding or event and dancing was something they enjoyed for the rest of their lives. They married in 1948, starting a family a few years later. Stan began his career at Robin Hood Floor Mill in Moose Jaw. Dad moved the family to Saskatoon in 1965 when the mill in Moose jaw closed down. In 1972, Stan took a job at International Multi foods in Buffalo, New York, residing there until 1977 at which time they moved back to Canada and Stan took a position at Ellison Milling in Lethbridge as Plant Superintendent. He enjoyed the last ten years of his career there and the many golfing trips he took with his wife Doreen and friends.

Dad, we will miss your steady presence, bad jokes and ever-present smile but know that you are happy to be back beside Mom.

Craig Patterson

1956 – 2021

With great sadness and achy hearts, Craig Allen Patterson passed away suddenly on February 2, 2021 at the age of 64 years.

Craig is survived by his daughter Carma Lynn Patterson; 5 grandchildren and the mother of his children, Theresa Marie Selnes; brothers Gilbert Patterson, Grant Patterson and family, along with his brother and sister in laws Tom Greg Selnes, Linda Jean Selnes; nephews, nieces and mother-in-law Ruth Virginia Selnes.

Craig is predeceased by his son Chad James Patterson.

He will be tremendously missed by all that knew him.

BETTY MORTON REID (née Lowe), beloved wife of the late Robert Reid, of Lethbridge and formerly of Millet, AB, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Cedar Creek Adaptacare on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the age of 98 years.

She is survived by her three children: Michael of Vernon, BC, David (Johanne) of Lethbridge, AB and Heather of Phoenix, AZ. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Jonathan, Cecilia, Frances and Jacob as well as several nieces and nephews.

Betty was born in Derby England, where she worked as a office clerk and eventually served for the RAF during WW2 as a plotter. She immigrated to Canada in 1950 and married Robert in 1955, which resulted in a 61 year union up until his passing in 2016. She had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, cross-country skiing and swimming. Her amazing creativity was demonstrated in painting, pottery and weaving and when it was time to relax, she always had a novel to read and a cup of tea beside her. She also had a love for gardening and animals, especially dogs.

Betty’s family and friends will honour her this summer in Vernon, BC with a gathering and spreading of ashes.

HARRISON

Robert Cecil Harrison, 95, of Coaldale, Alberta passed away on February 19, 2021. He was born on his folks’, Cecil and Pearl’s homestead in southern Saskatchewan, and attended the one room Pony Butte School.

Bob was humble about his WWII service. He signed up with the Canadian Air Force when he was just 17 years old and ended his commitment 3 years later with the Army after serving at the Battle of the Bulge.

In 1949 he moved to Coaldale with his bride-to-be, Lorene (Jahnke) where they built their lives and their family over the next 72 years. From construction foreman to liaison for the local Member of Parliament to managing his acreage on the edge of town, Bob was industrious. He served as the lead in building the sanctuary of the Coaldale United Church, supported the development of the Birds of Prey Foundation and was active in politics. In his leisure time Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter, the upshot being listed in Boone and Crockett for a Caribou in 1987. His later years gave rise to a stunning rose garden honoring his English roots, beekeeping resulting in delicious honey and tending his hobby farm.

Bob believed in people having opportunities for education and he took pride in every one of his 14 Grandkids having attended college. More importantly, he believed that the best education was to travel. His message was “Travel, see the world, meet people. This is how you really learn.” Having circumnavigated the globe three times on the Semester At Sea ship, Bob travelled to 50 countries and had endless tales of adventures that he shared in a delightful and animated style.

Above all else Bob was a practical man, hardworking, always up to the task at hand. Over the decades he happily built 3 homes for his family and “I never missed a day of work doing it!”

Bob teased often, laughed easily, told stories endlessly and loved his family immensely. He is survived by a large, loving family including, his wife of over 70 years, Lorene Marguerite and six children and their families: Ron (Helen) Harrison, Aura (Peter), Hunter, Diesel, Keya and Miksiw (Stacey) and baby; Roberta (Ross) Taylor, Kent (Megan), Keith (Kaitlin) and baby, Kurt; Marvel (Tom) Harrison Csanadi, Sopahn, Alex; Delynn (Ed) Schor, Jared, Brynn, Evan; Shannon (Keith) Schneider, Colton (Dallis), Jadon, Macai, Malia, Calais, Jenna Macai (in memory); Renée (Mark) Ehrnstein. Predeceased by sisters Irene, Vera and Gwen and brothers Fred, Gordon and Murray and survived by brother Richard (Dick), sister Pat and over 70 nieces and nephews whom he cherished and plenty of in-laws, he fondly called the out-laws.

Integrity and Bob’s gentle way of being leave a wide swath having influenced and inspired many friends and family members. He loved to visit with folks and was openly respected and admired.

Bob lived fully, with curiosity and wonder to the very end. Until a week before he passed away, he and Lorene spent three months enjoying zodiac rides to see dolphins, whale watching, regularly touring a bird sanctuary estuary and relaxing with sunsets while living on the beach with family in southern California. As Bob quipped the night before he flew back to Alberta, “It is hell to be old but I had a good time getting here!”, concluding it had been a good ride.

A Memorial gathering to celebrate his life and stories will be held when family and friends can safely gather. Bob lived to be 95. He’d likely shrug and say, “What’s the rush?”

PERRY MICHAEL GEORGE SALOFF

July 10, 1969 – February 18, 2021

Perry Michael George Saloff passed away on Thursday the 18th of February, 2021 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary due to complications from a heart condition. He was 51 years old.

Perry was the youngest son of Barney and Adele Saloff, brother to Terry, Larry and Garry, brother-in-law to Mary and uncle to Alex.

Growing up in the Crowsnest Pass, Perry enjoyed the outdoors with his friends, going on adventures with his father and adding to their respective hat collections. He especially enjoyed his mother’s holiday cooking. Perry loved playing team sports and developed a lifetime love for music after playing in the local high school band.

He left the Pass to go to college in Lethbridge. After the first year, he decided that the real-world experiences were the way to go and teamed up with friends to help manage hotels in Lethbridge, Slave Lake and in Kananaskis country. One of his favorite things to do was to meet up with the various entertainers who played at the hotels to enjoy their music.

Eventually, he made his way back to Lethbridge where he worked in retail , making more lasting friendships with those around him. Unfortunately, various health issues cut this time short. In 2019, he moved back to the Pass to be close to family.

At last, he is at peace and will always be remembered by the people he encountered.

UYTDEWILLIGEN

CORNELIUS “KEES” UYTDEWILLIGEN passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the age of 89 years.

He leaves behind his children: Harriet (Tom) Evans, Joanne (Peter) Coldham, Ken (Serena) Uytdewilligen, Jackie (Dave) Reich, Margaret (Kevin) Munchrath and Michael (Patti) Uytdewilligen; grandchildren: Katie (John Davis Shields) and Leanne (Brad Reed) Evans; Karen (Dan) Dykeman, David Coldham (Sarah Carson); Ryan Uytdewilligen (Mariana Aramburu); Nick, Ben, and Emily Reich; Rebecca, Sarah, and Camryn Munchrath; Lucas Uytdewilligen; and Casey and Piper Uytdewilligen as well as great-grandchildren Ellie and Andrew Shields; and Sienna Dykeman. Cornelius is also survived by brothers, sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews in Holland.

He is predeceased by beloved wife Francis, son Andrew and daughter-in-law Kim.

Born on September 23, 1931 in Halsteren, Holland to Marinus and Henritte, Cornelius grew up on the family farm with twelve siblings and later served as cook and sharpshooter for the Royal Netherlands Army. He married Francis on February 4, 1959 and made the long journey by boat and train to start a new life in Coaldale, Alberta, soon after.

Cornelius was known as a hard worker, having held many jobs to feed his family. He worked as a hired-hand, sanded drywall for home construction, and milked cows for the Lethbridge Research Station while establishing his own hog operation and sugar beet farm. Volunteer work was significant in Cornelius’ life; he started the Coaldale 4-H Swine Club with several other parents in the area and served as a Fourth-Degree-Knight of the Knights of Columbus. Religion was also an important fixture; as a devout Catholic, he sat on several boards for St. Ambrose Parish and served as an usher and minister delivering communion to the sick.

After retiring in his 60s, Cornelius filled much of his time gardening with his wife, visiting and touring around family from Holland, and lovingly teasing his many grandchildren who called him “Opa.” He would move to Lethbridge in 2011, and spend his final years in St. Michael’s where he would battle numerous health ailments including a lengthy struggle with diabetes.

Cornelius is remembered as a gentle and easygoing man; well liked by many in the community. Often referred to as an “instigator” by many members of his family, thanks to his playful and humorous spirit; he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. His much-enjoyed words of wisdom “big man at night, big man in the morning” have and will live on for many generations to come.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Michael’s Health Centre for their dedicated care over the past four years – particularly through this difficult time.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 1, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. with Father Ian Gagné celebrating. The Mass will be live streamed and may be accessed via Case’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.

Case will be laid to rest in the Coaldale Cemetery during a private Family Graveside Service.
