KUBIK

MARY ANN KUBIK, beloved wife of the late Frank John Kubik, of Iron Springs, AB, passed away peacefully at St. Therese Villa on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at the age of 94 years.

Mary is the loving mother of Bob (Joanne) Kubik of Iron Springs, and Ann (Jerry) Baran of Turin as well as eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Miles (Janice) Pavka and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Frank, Mary was predeceased by brother John and sister-in-law Frances, nephew Brian and special friend Rosie Baran.

Mary was born in Raymond, Alberta on November 25, 1926. She was the oldest child of Katerina and John Pavka. She had two younger brothers – John and Miles. The family moved to Cranford a few years later when they had an opportunity to purchase their first farm.

Mary attended grade school in Cranford and after completing grade 8, she stayed home where her Mom kept her busy helping on the farm doing whatever needed to be done. These jobs included farm chores in addition to helping her with the cooking and housework. Mary knew Frank before he even enlisted into the Royal Canadian Air Force and they kept in touch by writing letters to each other.

In 1945, Frank returned from the R.C.A.F. and purchased a farm in the Iron Springs area. After a short courtship, Frank and Mary were married on February 12, 1947. They had two children, Robert and Ann. Mary and Frank continued to farm, purchasing more land and expanding their farming operation. When Frank passed away in 1988, Mary decided to remain on the farm and she and her son, Robert carried on with the farming operation.

In January of 2013, Mary moved into St. Therese Villa where her best friend, Rosie Baran also resided. Together, they enjoyed each other’s company until Rosie’s passing in June 2016. Mary deeply missed her friend and it was then that her health began to decline. With this past year’s visiting restrictions due to covid-19, she was unable to enjoy the freedom of visiting freely with her family, especially the great-grandchildren. She truly missed seeing the them face to face and sharing hugs and kisses with them because of the age restriction implemented at St. Therese. Her health continued to deteriorate until her passing on March 4, 2021.

Mary was known for her kind and gentle manner. She was an amazing cook and talented baker. Whenever anyone stopped by, there was always coffee and some type of scrumptious pastry to enjoy! She was kept busy tending to her garden, and her apple trees which always seemed to produce more apples than anyone could ever use. When she had spare time, Mary also enjoyed crocheting and sewing. She loved listening to music, especially polkas and waltzes on her record player and frequently mentioned she wished she had learned how to play a musical instrument. Mary was a devout Catholic and a long-time member of the St. Catherine’s C.W.L.

Her bright smile and caring heart always lit up the room and will be missed by all that knew her.

A Prayer Service will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 7:00 PM.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 1:30 PM with Father Ian Gagné celebrating. Mary will be laid to rest with her husband Frank in Mountain View Cemetery.

Both services will be live streamed and may be accessed via Mary’s obituary on the Cornerstone website at their respective times.

In memory of Mary, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society (alzheimer.ca/donate)

Donald “Don” Roelofs

1941 – 2021

Mr Donald Roelofs of Lethbridge passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday March 5, 2021 at the age of 79 years.

Don spent his career as a mechanic. He could fix almost anything. Whether it was a back yard lawn mower or a 240-ton truck at the mines, he could always get it working again.

Throughout his life, he always loved photography. After retiring, his photography became an obsession. Whenever he attended an event, he took numerous photographs. It was always very well documented. He would often put together slide shows of the events for family and friends.

In the 80s, Don spent a few years working in the Yukon. Even though he had travelled all over the world, his love for the north had never left him. After his son Kent had moved back to the Yukon, he started an annual pilgrimage back north. He spent the majority of his summers in Faro, where his love of fishing and photography flourished.

Don is survived by his sons Michael (Angie) and Kenton (Melissa) and daughter Jennifer (Brett). Grandchildren Nicolletta, Melissa (Jordan), Marcella (Laine), Emilee, and Tyler, his sister Shirley (Jon), niece Christine (Ben), nephew Jimmy, and great niece Indira. He also leaves behind a number of very special cousins and friends.

He was always there when someone was in need. He had a very generous nature. We will always remember and miss him very much.

A private family Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Martin Brothers Riverview Chapel. Due to current restrictions, the service will be invite only.

Eric Wirzba

1936 – 2021

It is with great sadness that the family of Eric Wirzba announce his passing on February 27, 2021 in Medicine Hat, Alberta at the age of 84 years.

Eric was born on May 3, 1936 in Martinshoehe, East Prussia to August and Olga Wirzba. He was the fourth oldest child of six children.

He is predeceased by his eldest sister Wilhelmine; older brothers Emil and Alex; younger brothers Guenther and Gary.

Eric leaves to cherish his memory of his wife of 60 years Ingrid; son Wally; daughter Marlies; daughter in law Anna; two grandsons Brett and Jaxon. He also leaves a brother-in-law, 5 sister in laws and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eric always sought opportunity and was proud to have worked early on for Dorigatti Construction and Horton Steel works. In 1973 he created a company alongside 2 of his brothers Emil and Alex incorporated as “Wirzba Bros. Construction.” It would remain in business for 30 years. In 1992, in partnership until his son Wally and daughter Marlies began a Tim Hortons franchise that continues to operate to the present.

Eric’s faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of his life. He was in involved in church early in his life at the encouraging of his parents. It meant a great deal to him seeing the faithfulness of his parents to God who had an enormous influence on him and the entire family. Eric was honored to be a member and serve in a myriad of roles at the Bethany Baptist Church in Lethbridge for 47 years. Recently he attended First Baptist Church in Lethbridge, he cherished the fellowship and desired to become more involved, but with declining health it made it more and more challenging. He was blessed by the monthly devotionals that Pastor Bruce would provide.

Eric lived a full life and was able to knock off quite a few of his bucket list items. Two of note were a holy land tour to Israel with his daughter Marlies, and an across Canada train ride with a lifelong friend from Germany. Eric enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, DIY projects around the house, going to Tim Hortons for coffee with his friends and brothers, doing word search puzzles, BBQ amazing steaks for Wally and his friends and taking his daughters dog Sammi for walks and a haircut.

In 2004 Eric would begin a slow journey of declining health that would escalate to greater and greater medical attention. We have so many people to thank for the love and care shown to Eric during these past few years. We would like to extend a sincere thanks to Kei and Grace from First Baptist Church. The Nurses and Doctors at Lethbridge Regional Hospital. The staff at Sunny Side Nursing Home, and all the wonderful people at Riverview Care Nursing home and the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

A private family Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. The family invites those who wish to watch the service via livestream at http://www.mbfunerals.com and scrolling to the bottom of Eric’s obituary. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully declined. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Baptist Ministries, 7185 Millcreek Dr, Mississauga, ON L5N 5R4.
