MARVIN BAKER

1933 – 2020

Marvin Walter Baker passed away in Edmonton on December 9, 2020 at the age of 87. Marvin was born to Walter and Carrie Baker of Sundial on May 5, 1933. His siblings were sister Arlene (deceased) and brother Terrence. He is fondly remembered by his wife Keitha, son Ken, daughter Margaret, and grandchildren in Edmonton and Kelowna. Marvin passed away after a short period in an Edmonton hospital.

Marvin grew up on a dryland farm in the Sundial Community. Times were tough and work was physical. Marvin was interested in school and did well but because the Sundial school only went to grade 10, he chose to continue his schooling in Enchant. He rode his bicycle 3 miles to catch a bus to go to Highschool in Enchant and in the winter, he boarded with a family there. Marvin thought farming was all right but decided to become a teacher. After 2 years of university, he taught for 2 years in Enchant. He then went to University in Edmonton in 1958 to complete his degree. Marvin then moved to Sherwood Park and began teaching at Garneau High School in Edmonton where he remained for 20+ years.

Marvin had fond memories of playing baseball for Sundial and Enchant with his many young friends. He had a long and fulfilling life and will be missed by family and friends.

BOULTON

Dec. 21, 1961 – Mar. 15, 2021

ROBERT BOULTON passed away in Calgary on Monday, March 15, 2021, after a valiant effort for his life, at the age of 59 years old.

Rob is survived by his son Andrew Barker and mother Frieda Boulton, both of Lethbridge; four sisters: Linda (Ed) Klima of Lethbridge, Karen (Doug) LaValley of Calgary, Brenda Boulton (John Weber) of Waterloo ON and Anna Lee Boulton (Anton Glukhovsky) of Vancouver, BC.

He was predeceased by his father George “Bud” Boulton in 2011.

We remember Robert as a likeable, friendly and good-natured person. He loved golfing, (and was good at it, single handicap), water skiing and was fun-loving in general. He was a great cook and a real Foodie! He was accomplished in his career in the oil patch holding a fourth class engineer’s certificate for pressure equipment. Then as work slowed in the summer, he completed training and received his certification as a swimming pool operator. He was an integral part of maintaining the acreage where he lived with his mother.

He will be missed by his many relatives and friends in the farming community who all have relayed stories of how Rob had impacted their lives. Dear friends who golfed and travelled with him will miss his bright smile and keen wit.

Remembering you is easy, we do it every day. Missing you is a Heartache that never goes away!

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private viewing was held by invitation. Cremation was entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home.

Condolences and memories maybe shared and viewed on Rob’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Stars Air Ambulance (stars.ca/ways-to-donate/ab/), Lander Treatment Centre (c/o Claresholm and District Heath Foundation – Contact Tara 403-682-3739) or to the charity of your choice.

CHABAY

July 21, 1982 – April 6, 2021

We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of JACQUELINE (JACKIE) MICHELE CHABAY in Lethbridge, on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at the age of 38 years.

Jackie is survived by her three daughters – Jordynn, Taylor and Bailey; parents Bob and Bonny Chabay; sister Brianne (Chrystal) Chabay; nephews Jackson and Chace; former husband Dave Burgemeister; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Jackie was predeceased by her grandparents – Steve and Mary Chabay and Alexander and Anna Stanko; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. They will all now have a chance to renew acquaintances, free from pain and stress, and surrounded by peace and love.

Jackie was born in Lethbridge on July 21, 1982. She was raised and completed her schooling at Kate Andrews High School in Coaldale. After graduation, she lived in various places – Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, and most recently Raymond. Jackie was always highly organized and strived for perfection in her work, which greatly benefitted her jobs with UPS, Canadian Freightways and Canada Post. She also volunteered at the Chinook Regional Hospital.

Jackie’s proudest accomplishments were the births of her three daughters – Jordynn, Taylor and Bailey. Throughout her life and often difficult times, they were her love and priority. Even when they were apart, she always made sure to be involved in their health, education, and more importantly, letting them know how much she loved and cared for them. She always wanted what was best for her girls!

Jackie could be stubborn and persistent. She was a strong believer in “doing things her way”. She loved her cats, enjoyed bingo, and music (even though she was hard of hearing from birth), and most recently, “thrifting”.

Jackie had an extremely close relationship with her mother (Mama) who was always there for her through thick and thin. Their bond was everything a mother-daughter relationship should be and Mama now has a gaping hole in her heart and soul. Her regular FaceTime calls and texts will be greatly missed. Jackie was always able to overcome setbacks and start again. Her Dad always tried to keep her safe and made sure she made her way home, but this time it was just not meant to be. Jackie is now at peace and we are all so grateful for our time with her. We will remember the good times and love her forever and always.

As per Jackie’s wishes, there will be no services, but a private celebration of her life will be held for family and close friends at a later date. Cremation entrusted to Cornerstone Funeral Home.

A donation in Jackie’s name can be made to a pet rescue agency of your choice.

He farmed in Saskatchewan, worked in the lumber industry in British Columbia and mined nickel in Manitoba. He also worked in the oil fields in Alberta, everything from rough necking on a oil rig to water hauling. Harry built two houses in Taber and single handedly tore down the Taber railway station. He also loved hunting and fishing. As a youngster he hunted the woods of Saskatchewan to put food on the table for his mother and sisters. For years, he hunted rabbits and deer with a single shot twenty two riffle. When he finally got a big old long barrel Winchester, he hunted more deer along with moose and elk. Again, all for survival. Later on he still enjoyed hunting and became a sport hunter and fisherman. After many adventures, Harry married Johanna and eventually settled on the acreage east of Taber, he loved life on the farm. He was creative and inventive, if he needed something, he made it. If something broke, he fixed it. He was very helpful. If a neighbor came by and needed something fixed, Harry always lent a helping hand, from carpentry to welding and everything in between. Harry was a great husband and father who will be missed by all who came in contact with him.

SHANKS

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, MILDRED “MILLIE” KATHLEEN SHANKS. On Monday, March 29, 2021 after a brief decline in overall health, Millie passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side at the age of 92 years.

She will be lovingly remembered and forever cherished by her children: Glenn Shanks, Lana Shanks and Lyle (Diane) Shanks; and her grandchildren: Matt Shanks (fiancée Jeanine), Jaime (Leigh) Guerrine, Eric Shanks and Cole Shanks.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years Lawrence and her four older sisters and three brothers: John, Bessie, Marion, Eleanor, Dorothy, Gordon and brother Alvin. Millie was the last living member of our family from the homesteads of the past. No more questions to be asked, no more answers to come from living history, a void forever more.

Millie was born on June 13th, 1928, in Willow Bunch Saskatchewan, the youngest of eight children. She lived during a time where there wasn’t much to be had, never even having had a store bought toy doll as a child. They always made the best of things and with a strong family, they were always taken care of. Millie attended school in Willow Bunch, taking a “gig”, a type of two wheeled cart pulled by horse. Being the smallest, she was the passenger with Alvin often the driver. In her high school years, she worked at a local restaurant after school and received room and board. She only completed grade 11 due to the fact that she went to a dance in Verwood, Sask., where she met the love of her life, Lawrence and moved from school girl to wife. They were married in 1947 and lived in a small one room homestead to start their lives together. Strong, loyal and true to her word, she remained by Lawrence’s side through later years while he was in Edith Cavell Nursing Home, attending daily for years, being an active caregiver and wife in order to make sure he was comfortable and well cared for. Times were tough at the start of their lives. Mildred carried all the money they had in her purse for a number of years. While on the farm, she worked tirelessly, helping with chores of feeding cattle as any hired hand might. That was added to helping with other farm work, looking after a two acre garden, a flower garden and cleaning up the yard of old buildings and materials. She began her own family, with Glenn in 1951, Lana in 1954 and Lyle in 1959. Family was the most important thing to Mildred and she supported, cared for and loved them unconditionally for the entirety of her life. She loved her four grandkids attending any and all events that she possibly could. There was always something to brag about, when you have grand ones and ..she did. She was independent and an athlete, finding time to curl with Lawrence and on her own teams while on the farm. Later in life, Millie enjoyed bowling, bridge, crib, coloring, puzzles, crosswords and the list would go on. An avid Blue Jays fan, hockey fan and general sports fan, Millie had a love of life and for the people around her. She moved on with life in each stage from house, to condo and finally assisted living in the Garden View Lodge, always seeming to know when the time was right. She was an example of life progression and acceptance of what was to come.

A twinkle in her eye, a smile, a sparkling spirit. We must say good-bye for now, though you will kept close in our hearts for all of our time.

Sweet Dreams to our mom, grandmother and friend.

The family would like to express its deepest thanks to those who have supported Millie throughout her time. Adrian and the staff at Garden View Lodge were wonderful, the caring, the atmosphere, the personal touch on everything, “Thank you”. The home care team and Palliative team were so supportive in our times of need, “Thank you.” Emergency staff, hospital staff, doctors, all with such care and concern, “Thanks”….and all the missed thanks you’s. The Shanks

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. The service will be live streamed and may be accessed via Mildred’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.

BRENT ALLEN SORGE

November 24th, 1974 – April 3rd, 2021

Brent Allen Sorge, beloved son, father, brother, and friend died on Saturday, April 3rd. Left to mourn his passing are his daughters Raven Scott Sorge (Vince Knight) and Nella Sorge, his mother JoAnn St. John (Ian Hepher), his father Allen Sorge (Mary Ann), his sister Robyn Sorge (Christen Dokk Smith) and niece Freyja, his brother Kevin Sorge (Brittany) and nephew Max.

His step-brothers Robin Hepher (Corinne Theissen) and Skye, and Michael Hepher (Anie) and Finn and Theo will also mourn his passing. Brent belonged to a huge extended family, and had a large circle of friends, who are all deeply saddened by this loss.

Brent was a man like no other. To quote some of his many friends, he had a fire and passion that burned brightly, yet always seemed to be one step away from his own happiness. He championed the downtrodden and was never at a loss to share his heart…or his opinion.

Growing up, Brent loved being with family and friends. Brent comes from two large loving families and learned early in life about the importance of connection. He forged deep and meaningful friendships that supported him through many struggles and adversity.

At a young age he developed a love of music which came to be his life-long passion. It was through music that Brent found his greatest expression and deepest joy, outside of his daughters. He was a die-hard Oilers fan, to which many of his friends can attest.

Brent had a brilliant mind and a heart that loved fiercely, yet he struggled with everyday life.

Rest in power, Brent. You are loved. And you will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Mental Health Programs at the Lethbridge Family Ties Association (www.familyties.ca). Due to current restrictions, a private celebration of immediate family is being held on Friday, April 9th. A “Celebration of Life” honouring Brent will be held later this summer, depending on COVID restrictions.

Condolences can be sent to http://www.evergreenfh.ca
