Barbara Lois Craig

1935 – 2021

The family of Barbara Lois Craig of Lacombe, Alberta, beloved wife of the late James Craig, is saddened to announce her passing at Chinook Regional Hospital on June 6, 2021 at the age of 85.

Barb is survived by her son Ken (Sandy), daughter Sheree (Rick), and son Steve (Diane), 7 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. Barb was predeceased by her parents Henry and Irinda Howe, sisters Loreen and Doreen, and son Brian.

Barb and Jim spent their early married life going town to town, building Alberta’s roads before settling in Calgary in 1965. After raising her children and working 10 years at the Foothills Hospital, Barb and Jim retired to the family farm near Alix and enjoyed a decade raising pets and pretending to be farmers. From there, Barb moved back to Lacombe where she met many great friends and enjoyed condo life.

Barb loved to travel with Jim and found beauty and embraced culture wherever she landed. One of Barb’s most memorable trips came when she was in her 70’s and recently widowed. Since Nunavut was the only territory or province she hadn’t visited, she hopped a cargo plane to Iqaluit to meet the people of the north.

A celebration of her life will take place at a later date.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Therese Villa for their care of Barb. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Therese Villa for recreational services to improve the lives of residents.

Lena was born on September 14, 1923 in the McCreary district of Manitoba to Robert Lindsay and Elisabeth Gardiner. The second of six children, she was raised on a farm, but joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, working in Ottawa. After discharge in 1946, she married her childhood sweetheart, Keith, and moved to Winnipeg, where their first child, Marvin, was born. In 2004, she and Marvin moved to Lethbridge to stay close to Trevor’s family, and shortly thereafter took up volunteer work with Lethbridge Police Victim’s Services and the Chinook Hospital’s palliative care. MACLENNAN

DR. DONALD MACLENNAN, born on January 5, 1929 in Cornwall Ontario to Langill MacLennan and Hazel Cameron, passed away on Friday evening July 2, 2021 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Don embraced growing up as an only child among cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents in and around Cornwall. As a youth he would ride his bike across the bridge spanning the St. Lawrence River unimpeded by border officers to play with his cousins in Massina, New York.

After graduating from grade 13 Don joined many WWII veterans at Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph and graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Toronto in 1952. He then ventured west to Lethbridge where he began a partnership with classmate Garth Passey. They purchased the Lethbridge Animal Clinic adjacent to the stockyards on Highway 3 and through their career-long partnership became close friends with many of the cattlemen, feedlot operators and mixed farming families across Southern Alberta.

Don felt especially confident with his move to Lethbridge when he met Sheila Roberts. They married on September 16th, 1955 and enjoyed a long life together. Together, Don and Sheila raised five children, Cameron (Cathy), Scott (Karen), Rory (Norma), Megan and Murray. He spent much of his time coaching his children in hockey and baseball, as well as hiking, boating and golfing. Later in life he was often found gardening, relaxing and reading books at the family cabin in Waterton and watching his grandchildren in their many athletic and artistic pursuits.

Don served in a number of leadership positions including as president of the Southern Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, on the board of directors of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, on the board of directors and as president of the Lethbridge Country Club and as one of the founding directors of the Western Drug Distribution Company (enabling all veterinarians access to animal pharmaceuticals at the same base cost).

Don thoroughly enjoyed his career as a veterinarian and throughout his life felt the love and support of Sheila, his children, Sheila’s six siblings and their families, as well as his many friends.

Don leaves to mourn Sheila, his wife of 66 years, his 5 children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Don’s legacy of caring and kindness continues in the lives of many of his family and friends.
