Steve Dimnik

1928 – 2021

Steve was one of ten children born to Joseph and Maria Dimnik in Slovenija. WWII resulted in the family fleeing Slovenija to Austria. After four years in a Displaced Persons camp, he and other family members immigrated to Canada to work as farm labourers. Upon fulfilling this commitment, Steve began working as a trained journeyman carpenter. Through the years he continued to hone his craft of finishing carpentry and became well known for his excellent work. Much of his handiwork still adorns buildings and homes throughout Lethbridge and surrounding areas. Steve was defined by his love for his wife of 67 years and his desire to make the best possible life for his family. He savoured the simple things in life. He had a playful and mischievous side that endeared him to those who knew him. Steve’s generosity coupled with his outgoing personality and willingness to help others touched many hearts.

Steve was predeceased by his parents and nine siblings. He is survived by his wife (Ann); his children Leo (Susan) and Mark (Barbara); his grandchildren Nadine (Nicholas), Jason (Jenna), Andrea (Brendan), Ben, Jackson, Jonah; and his great grandchildren Nathaniel, Cameron, Briella, Elias and Kinsley. The family wishes to thank the excellent care provided over the years by Drs. Zielke and Strank.

Alex Sereda

January 14, 1927 – December 21, 2021

Alex Sereda better known to most as Dido, left his earthly home, surrounded by his loving family; to live peacefully with his eternal Father, Wednesday, December 22, 2021, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Dad (Alexander) was born on January 14, 1927 in Hadich, Ukraine to Nikita and Anastasia Sereda. Dad’s family left Ukraine and walked to the Hungarian border and then to Austria and eventually came by ship to Pier 21 in Halifax.

Dad’s family arrived on June 16, 1948 by train to the Lethbridge area. (Dad recalls how there was rain for a week when they arrived and then it dried up and there was no moisture until the snow flew.) Dad bought a farm in Shaughnessy in 1951 with his parents.

On a cold winter day in December of 1955, Alex met Mary Ponomar and the two were engaged on her birthday in 1956 and married October 27 the same year.

Mary and Alex lived in Lethbridge until they were expecting their first child, Leona.

That fall Mom and Dad bought their own farm in the Newlands district west of Kipp.

The family grew; Peter, Zoia, and Irene completed their family. Dad worked at the CPR on steam trains; Sugar Factories in Picture Butte and Taber and was a Power Engineer at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital until his retirement.

In 1964, they moved to the farm in Shaughnessy where they resided until 2004. At that time, Mom and Dad sold the farm and retired to Lethbridge. In 2016, they moved into St. Therese Villa, where he was cared for until his passing.

Alex was pre-deceased by his father, Nikita in 1997, mother, Anastasia, 2010 and great-grand-daughter Cora Kraemer August 2015.

Alex is lovingly survived by wife Mary of 65 years, daughter Leona (Kevin) Kraemer; Jason (Jackie) Jaxon; Kelly (Amber) Sophia; son Peter (Lori) Sereda, Nicholas (Kristie), Westin, Montgomery, Beau; Nathan (Naomi); Nolan (Dannielle) Isabella; Nevin (Charlee); daughter Zoia (Daryl) Schacher, Tanessa (Jared), Holden, Macrae, Payce; Braeson (Natasha); daughter Irene (Gord) Schussler, Jaylene (Lance) Maren, Rhett; Deiryk (Hannah) Hunter, Garrett, Kaleb, Marijka; Clayton (Myriah) and his brother Lloyd Sereda.

Dad was gentle, respected, easy-going, supportive, and filled with love.

We love you dearly and forever.

Many thanks to the staff of St. Therese Villa and Dr. Stitt for their great care of dad over the years.

Due to COVID restrictions, attendance numbers are limited and will be by invite only.

A Viewing will be held from 5:00pm to 6:30pm on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta.

A Private Funeral Service will be held at THE HOLY TRINITY UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH, Lethbridge, Alberta with Father Taras Krochak, officiating.
