VIOLET IRENE MACLEAN

January 7, 1923 – February 17, 2022

VIOLET IRENE (BRANDVOLD) MACLEAN slipped away quietly while asleep during the early morning hours of Thursday, February 17th in her 99th year at the Chinook Regional Hospital after a short stay.

She was born on January 7th, 1923 on her grandparent’s farm near Asquith, Saskatchewan to Mabel Brandvold. Her Norwegian grandfather Erland and grandmother Kari Brandvold raised her as she attended school in nearby Asquith. They called her ‘Tooty’ as she was full of laughter and the joy of life. Her first language back then was Norwegian.

She made her way to Saskatoon as a teenager working at the Bessborough Hotel for many years in the Dining Room before marrying our father, Donald W. MacLean.

They eventually moved to Edmonton and then to Calgary in 1966 where our mom continued her long sales associate career with Simpson Sears. After our father passed away unexpectedly in 1969, mom met our step-father, Harold W. Leis a number of years later. In 1978, she moved to be with him at his home in Kitchener, Ontario. These were extremely happy years for her, socializing with their many friends and spending winters in Florida.

After the sudden passing of our beloved Harold in 1992, mom moved to Lethbridge to be with her eldest son, Ron. Soon, she was in her new condo at Grandview Village enjoying her many new friends and keeping active in the community with many clubs and associations.

After twenty years, a new chapter in her life took her to another wonderful place to live, Black Rock Terrace in Lethbridge. She truly loved her life there. Her quick smile and engaging personality brought so many close friends into her life including all the warmhearted staff members that were so good to her. She was there for almost ten years.

Left to feel this immense loss are her two sons, Ron (Denise) of Airdrie and Robert (Fon) of Gig Harbor, Washington; as well as special friends Elizabeth and Eva. Her dearest mother, Mabel Brandvold Lunde, predeceased her in 1996.

Our most sincere gratitude goes to the gracious, loving care she received while at the Chinook Regional Hospital Unit 3C. Thank you all!

At mom’s request, there is no service.

PROUDFOOT

It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of CHARMAINE SHARON PROUDFOOT (nee Laflamme) on February 15, 2022 in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 67 years old.

Charmaine is survived by her former husband, Jeffery Proudfoot; her daughter Tiffany Mandryk (Christopher), granddaughter Celeste Mandryk; brother Norman Laflamme (Sri Mintarti); niece Cassidy Laflamme; former sister-in-laws Colleen Proudfoot, Sharee Proudfoot (Gerry Diakow), and Joan Proudfoot; former nephews and niece Hector Diakow (Andrea), Brandon Diakow (Anastasia) and Rachel Diakow (Joel Smith); as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins especially her cousins: Terri Hrkac, Susan Bukovy (Brian), and Nancy Carleton (Mark).

She was predeceased by her wonderful son Matthew Proudfoot, her parents, step-father Real Laflamme, former brother-in-law Garry Proudfoot and former in-laws Colin and Judith Proudfoot.

Charmaine was born in Toronto, Ontario on July 15, 1954. She moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario as a young child to be closer to family, then later moved to Dryden, Ontario in 1965. She graduated from high school in Dryden and then moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where she got a job with the Royal Bank. She worked there for a few years, then moved to the Lower Mainland, BC with Jeff. They were married in 1977 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. They then moved to Creston, B.C. in 1978 after purchasing their first business, the Kokanee Inn. They grew that business, and their daughter Tiffany was born there in 1980. In 1982, they sold the Kokanee Inn and purchased the Lethbridge Hotel and Jessie’s Bar and moved to Lethbridge, Alberta. They grew that business with Jeff working as the hotel manager and Charmaine working as bar manager for many years until Charmaine was able to stay home with her young family. Their son Matthew was born in Lethbridge in 1983. They sold the hotel in 2000, which allowed for them to enjoy a semi-retirement life with winters spent at their home in Arizona, and summers at home in Lethbridge. In 2016, Charmaine decided to move to Edmonton to be closer to her daughter and other family.

Charmaine was a lover of books, cooking for family and friends, travel, golfing, and hosting friends and family. She loved supporting her children in all their school and extra-curricular activities, including hockey and Girl Guides.

A Funeral Service will be conducted on February 25, 2022 AT CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME-2825 32 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta at 10:00 AM, with Patrick Siedlecki officiating. A reception will follow.
