BEARD

March 21, 1918 – February 22, 2022

MARY BEARD (Maria Dimitra Kokinos), passed away peacefully at the Milk River Health Centre, at the age of 103 years.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Ralph, parents, James & Edna Red, one sister and two brothers. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Ruth (Loyal Orcutt) and many far-flung nieces and nephews as a very special aunt. She is especially remembered as a second “mother” by all of the Beard nephews who spent summers at the farm.

A longtime resident of Milk River, Mary was involved in the family farm and ranch activities, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Order of the Royal Purple, Milk River Seniors Organization and American Legion Auxiliary Border Unit #73. An avid gardener, she preserved the bounty from her gardens and took pride in her roses. Family, friends and hired men all enjoyed her roast beef dinners and rhubarb pies. There was always room for an extra place at the table. Mary approached life with a strong will and an unmatched determination; always willing to pitch in and lend a hand when needed. Once she learned to drive, there was no stopping her and she drove until her 93rd year. If there was an event or occasion out of town, Mary could always be counted on to drive a carload of friends to wherever it was.

Her interests were varied and wide. She loved cooking, gardening, canning and pickling, reading and crossword puzzles, playing Bingo, pursuing genealogy, raising German Shepherd dogs and playing the piano, especially the music of the Big Band era.

Thank you to Dr. Lewke-Bogle, Dr. Krog and Dr. Ovwasa for all of the care given to Mary. The family also thanks the nurses, HCA’s and support staff at MRLTC. The care Mary received was exceptional.

Memorial donations may be made in Mary’s name to the Milk River Health Centre, PO Box 90, Milk River, AB, T0K 1M0 or, honouring Mary’s love of companion animals, to a local animal rescue society or Humane Society of one’s choice.

In accordance with Mary’s wishes, no formal service will take place.

The song is ended, but the melody lingers on…

DAW

RUTH MAY DAW passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 20, 2022, at St. Michael’s Health Centre at 93 years old.

On May 16, 1928, Ruth was born in Medicine Hat to Jack (John) Hulland and Helen Sneddon. She was the eldest of four children, raised during the depression and WWII on an isolated sheep farm. Her early years developed her work ethic and a keen lifelong passion for education. As young children, they had jobs during lambing and shearing. The children learned by correspondence, attending school only in the winter months.

Her family homestead in the British Block district was expropriated in 1941 to become part of the Suffield Military Base. She lived this work ethic and shared it with her children and grandchildren, almost always positive and supportive.

Ruth was proud of her accomplishments in life, including being awarded the Governor General’s medal for honors in grade nine, receiving her B.A/B.Ed from the University of Alberta in 1950, achieving her Masters in Counselling from the University of Calgary in 1973 and several educational diplomas while teaching.

In 1950, Ruth was employed by Lethbridge School District #51, teaching French and Phys-Ed at Hamilton Junior High and later as a guidance counsellor and teaching those with learning disabilities. Marriage in 1953 to C.E. Clifford Daw in Lethbridge, followed by the birth of their three children, saw her take ten years off from teaching. She raised her three daughters (Carolyn, Evelyn, and Lorraine) always encouraging them to higher learning. Ruth returned to teaching in 1963 until her retirement in 1989. She enjoyed singing, participating in the U of A Choir, the Lethbridge Symphony Choir, and the First United Choir.

Ruth was an avid volunteer in the Home & School associations, the Lethbridge Food Bank, the Lethbridge Exhibition Hobby World, LSCO, and the River Ridge Condo Association. Her hobbies included volunteering, playing bridge, quilting, travelling (including nine times to Australia to see her daughter Lorraine and her growing family), and researching and writing the history of the expropriated families from the British Block. She was a generous supporter of family members, the U of L art collection, Galt Museum Archives, and the Medicine Hat Esplanade Art & Heritage Centre. Ruth was always positive and supportive of anyone who worked hard and tried to better themselves. She lived by example, was fiercely independent, and lived on her own until a short illness.

Ruth is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn (Rod) Ramey, Evelyn Lyon, Lorraine Ellis; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Eleanore Hulland; brother-in-law, Don (Wilma) Daw; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, especially Mary Jankowiak. She was predeceased by her husband, Cliff; brother Tom Hulland; sisters Marion Terris, Esther Klemp; and son-in-law Keith Lyon.

The family greatly appreciates the wonderful care Ruth received from all the staff at St. Michael’s, Palliative Care, Community Long-term Care, and the Long-term Care units. Please make donations to Lethbridge Seniors’ Centre Organization (LSCO) or the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

JACKSON, JOHN DOUGLAS “DOUG”

July 25, 1951 – Pincher Creek, AB

February 19, 2022 – Calgary, AB

Doug Jackson, son of John and Frances Jackson, passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the age of 70 years. Doug is survived by his brother Bill (Livia), sister-in-law Laura, nephews Mike (Rebecca) and Ben, nieces Heather, Robyn (Tony), Willow (Dave), and Holly, grandnieces Kaia, Madeline, Maisie, Amelia and Jasper, and grandnephews Griffin and Dexter. Doug was predeceased by his parents and his brother Lawrence. Doug graduated from Matthew Halton School in Pincher Creek and earned a degree in anthropology from the Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. He spent several years researching the Mi’kmaq peoples’ history in Newfoundland, after specifically being chosen to do so by the band council in Conne River, NL. This important work culminated in On the Country: the Micmac of Newfoundland, a book based on his research and writings, which was published in 1992. He also spent several years in Labrador working for the Innu Nation. This interest in people and cultures also took him on travels to many places in Canada as well as the UK and South America. The 1990’s brought Doug back to southern Alberta and the family cabin in Waterton. He worked in the hotel industry and spent his free time exploring the peaks, trails, and waters of this special place that was so close to his heart. An avid naturalist, Doug was a wealth of information on what to see and do in the Waterton area and he had great stories about his encounters with wildlife over the years. Doug was wonderfully curious and could always be found with a book or newspaper in his hand, or listening to radio programs and watching documentaries. He had an amazing ability to connect with people. His nieces and nephews recall that he could make you feel like you were the only person in the room as he listened intently to your stories – and remembered them years later! Doug spent the last decade in Lethbridge and then the last few months in Calgary with his family as he dealt with his illness. He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers and a service, the family welcomes photos and stories of Doug. A plaque will be installed on the memorial wall in Waterton Park in his memory.
