Darryl Groenenboom

1965 – 2022

As the sun set on March 3, Darryl Jake Groenenboom of Coalhurst, beloved husband of Yvonne Lynn Groenenboom, left this earth and breathed his first breath of heaven. His life of 56 years was cut short with sudden and tragic illness.

Darryl was born in Lethbridge on November 2, 1965. He spent his childhood on the family farm and returned there, after a brief career in the aviation industry, to farm with his brother Joe. He raised his family on the farm and leaves behind his children Spencer, Shelby (engaged to Samuel Korsholm), Cheyenne (married to Jeremy Van Hierden), Nikita, Peyton, and his grandson Valour. He embraced the life God gave him with vigour and gratefulness; from sowing seeds to flying planes, from harvesting the bounty of sown seeds to serving in the soup kitchen. His life testified to being loved and living loved. He held tenaciously to his life’s scripture: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Prov 3:5. He is also survived by his mother Betty Groenenboom, his sisters Terrie (Willie) Tietz, Marion (Frank) Jankunis, his brother Joe (Corlene) Groenenboom, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and their families. Darryl also leaves to mourn Helen Toews, Sheldon (Lynn) Toews, Laurali (Carlin) Fehr, and their families. He was predeceased by his Father Jochem Groenenboom, Father-in-law Bruno Toews, as well as two preborn children.

As a family we would also like to thank the many medical professionals that attended to Darryl’s needs; from the ER staff, to the nursing team on 4C, to the home care team that made his last days as comfortable as possible. We are grateful for your care.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERIVEW CHAPEL, 610-4TH Street South, Lethbridge, with a short program and opportunity to share starting at 6:30 PM.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, on March 9, 2022 at the EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH OF LETHBRIDGE, 4717 24 Ave S, Lethbridge. A private Interment will be held prior to the service.

Donations to Shareword Global (formerly known as the Gideons), 501 Imperial Rd N, Guelph, ON N1H 6T9, Canadian Foodgrains Bank, 393 Portage Ave #400, Winnipeg, MB R3B 3H6, or Missionary Aviation Fellowship, 102-195 Hanlon Creek Blvd, Guelph, ON N1C 0A1, in memory of Darryl’s faith, farming, and flying, are gratefully accepted.

Hermina (Mina) Hoogerdijk

1934 – 2022

Mrs. Hermina (Mina) Hoogerdijk, beloved wife of Mr. Cornelis Hoogerdijk, passed away at St. Therese Villa in Lethbridge, Alberta on Thursday, March 3, 2022 at the age of 87 years.

Mina was born October 8, 1934 in Hardenberg, Holland as one of 12 children. She immigrated to Canada in 1955. She and Cornelis were married on March 21, 1958.

Besides her loving husband Cornelis Hoogerdijk, she is survived by five children, Margaret (Ed Tams), John (Margaret), Ron (Tamara), Ed (Alice) and Willy (Trish).

Her much-loved son Bernie passed on to Heavenly glory on August 15, 2016. She will be dearly missed by her eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

She was known as Mina, Oma, Mookie, and Minty to many. She was funny and didn’t even know it. God gifted her with a character that was good-hearted, gentle, kind, thoughtful, and loving. Her physical health waned significantly in recent years. She sustained a life-long battle with depression and anxiety. But with all those burdens she was more concerned about the well-being of others.

She walked through this life with a child-like faith like no other. She never doubted her destination. She finished her race graciously, Heaven’s doors opened wide, and Jesus welcomed her home. Our beloved mother and Oma is free from the cares and worries of this world; for there is no more sorrow, no more pain, and no more worries in Heaven.

The grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss her peppermints, that often tasted like perfume. They’ll miss the Rolaids and Vitamin C she passed off as candies. They’ll always remember the quick clean of the face with the lick of her thumb. They’ll miss her voice and curiosity. But most of all she’ll be missed for her love. A love that was patient and kind. A love that did not boast. A love that was not proud. A love that was not self-seeking, easily angered, or kept a record of wrongs. A love that protected, trusted, hoped, and persevered. A love that never failed. (1 Corinthians 13).

Dearest Wife, Mom, Oma, and Great-Oma, you finished your race! We’ll miss your beautiful presence in our lives but knowing you are now at home with your Lord and Saviour is our comfort and joy!

“The LORD is my light and my salvation—

whom shall I fear?

The LORD is the stronghold of my life—

of whom shall I be afraid?”

(Psalm 27:1)

A public Viewing will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, March 7, 2022 p.m. at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 – 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta.

Anthony Horvath

1931 – 2022

Anthony (Tony) Horvath, beloved husband of Angelika (Angie) Horvath died in Lethbridge on Tuesday, March 2, 2022 at the age of 91. First born of Antal and Margaret Horvath (nee Csokea) on January 24, 1931, at Srbonran, Yugoslavia, also known as St. Thomas, Hungary, Tony was a proud Hungarian and cherished his heritage.

As a young man, Anthony immigrated to Canada with his treasured violin under one arm and a small suitcase under the other, seeking a promising future. His musical talents were quickly recognized and provided novel opportunities and connections throughout his lifetime.

In the early fifties, Tony met Angelika Kieselbach in Lethbridge, and promptly fell in love. They married in 1954 at St. Patrick Church, commemorating nearly 68 years together. This union produced four daughters: Valeria, Margaret, Angelika and Elizabeth.

A devoted husband and father, Tony provided for his family through hard work as a labourer, employed at Ellison Mills and later at Canadian Dressed Meats. He was known for his reliability, tenacity and precision.

Anthony engaged in many interests and through the decades he enjoyed soccer, photography, bartending, dancing, acting in theatrical plays, winemaking, beekeeping, lapidary, collecting stamps, coins and more. His greatest love however, was music.

Tony was a fine violinist and played in the Lethbridge Symphony as a charter member for several years. He enthusiastically played hundreds of Hungarian Folksongs, eventually forming Magjarnota Harmas, (aka the Hungarian Trio) with fellow musicians Lajos Szilasi and Laci Kurtos, performing at numerous community events. His love of music was passed to his children, ensuring they all received formal training and encouragement over the years.

Tony is a lifetime member of the Lethbridge Hungarian Old-timers Club, a charter member of the Hungarian Cultural Society of Southern Alberta, a long-time member of the RockHounds, a Knights of Columbus Council #1490 member, and was installed as a Fourth Degree in the Father Lacombe Assembly.

Anthony is survived and lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Angelika and their four daughters: Valeria Lazzaretto (Lethbridge) and her children; Danille Lazzaretto-Green (Jeff), Marina Lazzaretto (New York City), and Adam (Jessica) Lazzaretto (Calgary). Margaret (Terry) Miller (Edmonton) and her children; Ilyan Amadeus (Danielle) Lorieau- Peruch, and Ambyr (fiancé Casey) Miller. Angelika (Ken) Enns (Drumheller) and her children; Lancelot Horvath-Enns, Andrew (Alyshia) Enns, and Lorraine Seright. Elizabeth (Jim) Desroches (Calgary) and her children; Mark (Ellie) Micklich (Edmonton), Amanda (Geordie) Turner, and Stephanie (Paul) Snider. In addition, Tony and Angie are blessed with 22 great- grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Tony is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Leo (Bev) Kieselbach (Lethbridge), John Szabo (Calgary), and his sister, Valerie (Matt) Lutter (Stirling), as well as several nieces and nephews.

He now joins his parents, granddaughter, Bryna-Jayne Miller-Butler, and sister-in-law, Hilda Szabo in eternal slumber.

CAROL ANNE KAPRAL, beloved wife of the late Pete Kapral, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Edith Cavell Care Centre on Friday, February 25, 2022 at the age of 80 years.

Carol is survived by her sons Jack (Karen) of Fruitvale, B.C., and Peter of Lethbridge, grandchildren: Jay (Brianna), Mandy, Kayla, Peter J and Angela and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Jim (Shirley), Tom (Bonnie), Grant (Linda) and Joan (Mike).

She was predeceased by her son Robert, mother Garda (Woolf), father Ephriam Allan Bateman, and sister Barbara Leavitt (Jerry).

Carol was born and raised in Cardston. After marrying her husband Peter in 1960, they moved to Australia for Peter’s employment in the drilling industry. She had her first two sons, Jack and Peter Jr. and came back to Canada in 1965. In 1966, she welcomed her third son, Robert, in Fort Nelson, BC. In 1967, she followed her husband to Algeria for two years. She returned to Cardston where her mom, Garda always had a house. In 1973, she followed her husband to Iran, where they lived for six years, with annual trips back to Canada. The highlight of that is that she got to bring her mom over for an excursion including tours in London and Athens. When she moved back, she spent time living in Edmonton, St. John’s, NL, and Calgary. When Peter retired, they moved back to Cardston and ran the Payless gas station and diner for five years. They closed the business after the passing of Carol’s beloved mom, Garda in 1990. In 1991, her husband, Peter, also passed away. She remained in Cardston until she started her career as a camp cook on the drilling rigs. She lived with her son, Peter Jr. in Pincher Creek and friends in Edmonton. After her career came to an end, she lived in Cardston again, until illness forced her to take a room in Lethbridge nursing homes until her passing.

Joan Enid McDonald

1920 – 2022

On Monday, February 28, 2022, Joan Enid McDonald passed in her sleep of natural causes at the age of 101.

Joan was born on September 16, 1920 to Sydney Saxby and Enid (Field) Saxby in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, England. She was the dearly loved mother of Jacquelynne (Ken) Young of Lethbridge, Suzan (Michael) Alexander of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jennifer (Bruce) Heron of Motueka, New Zealand, and Marty Schacht of Calgary; Grandmother of Robyn Schacht of Calgary and Kimberley Schacht of Victoria, BC; and Great-Grandmother of Rianne Robar of Calgary. Extended family include nieces in England and Ontario and their families.

While living in Lymington, Hampshire during WWII, on the south-east coast of England, Joan was asked to attend a tea dance put on to entertain the Canadian soldiers who were stationed there for training. William “Sandy” McDonald, of the 48th Highlanders Regiment out of Toronto, took one look and wanted to have every dance with her. They married in 1943 before he was shipped out to Sicily for the Italian campaign, and they danced together for 46 years until he passed in 1989.

In 1945, Joan left her mother, two sisters and all that was familiar to sail on a ship provided by the Canadian government to bring British war brides to Canada. On arriving in Ontario, she was met by Sandy’s family as he was still fighting the war in Holland. They lived in Ontario until 1950 when they moved to Alberta with their two daughters and welcomed two more daughters within another 4 years. Joan quickly made long-lasting friendships with a close circle of other English war brides. They would have afternoon teas together that included a glass or two of Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry, and Joan would make the most wonderful eclairs and creme puffs which the children were warned had been counted so not to even think of sneaking one.

Joan worked for many years as the Ward Clerk on the pediatric ward at St. Michael’s Hospital and then as receptionist and office manager for Dr. Duncan Brown, a local plastic surgeon. Working full-time and raising four children left little time for relaxation, but Joan would still find opportunities to work in her beautiful flower garden. She was a voracious reader, an interest she passed on to all four daughters. She loved to travel and would go to England to see her family, to New Zealand, Michigan and Calgary to visit her daughters, and to a number of European countries, Hawaii and Australia. After retirement, she and Sandy would escape the Alberta winters in Hemet, California until his passing. She liked to sing along with the radio, off-key but enthusiastically. She was an elegant lady who would never leave the house unless well-dressed and wearing fresh lipstick. She would have liked to learn how to fly, but finances and obligations never allowed it. Joan celebrated her 100th birthday with a party and was tickled to receive congratulations from Prime Minister Trudeau, the Governor-General, and Queen Elizabeth II.

At Joan’s request, there will be a private cremation with no service. A memorial event will be arranged at a later date.

Donations to a charity of one’s choice are encouraged in place of flowers which are gratefully declined.

Joan had, in her own words, a wonderful life. She was a generous, kind, and caring woman who could laugh at herself and with others. She constantly reminded her family that they were loved and while we are grateful that she was such a big part of our lives for so long, she will be greatly missed.

Joan leaves us all with some lines taken from one of her favorite poems:

Do not stand at my grave and weep,

I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am in a thousand winds that blow,

I am the softly falling snow.

I am the gentle showers of rain,

I am the fields of ripening grain.

I am in the birds that sing,

I am in each lovely thing.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there. I did not die.
