By Lethbridge Herald Obituaries on March 22, 2022.

Michael Henry Dixon Broadbent

June 15, 1925 – March 19, 2022

Michael Broadbent left this earthly realm at the grand age of 96 years He was bright of mind but weak of body and ready to join his soulmate Patricia and son Keith who passed before him.

He is survived by his daughter, Jane (Greg) Senda, and grandchildren Mika (Jesse) and Teio (Jessica). He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

He was also predeceased by his sisters Barbara and Joan. Michael was born in Hale, Cheshire, England on June 15, 1925 to Stanley and Dorothy Broadbent.

Michael led a life rich with adventure. At an early age, it was discovered that Michael was an exceptional sprinter. He was selected to represent the British Olympic team at the 1948 games in London, England. However, an unfortunate injury put a quick end to that dream.

At the age of 17, he became Sub Lieutenant Michael Broadbent for the British Navy. He served on aircraft carriers Unicorn and Glory in the South Pacific.

Michael became a mechanical engineer and brought his family to start a new life in Canada. Michael, Patricia, Keith and Jane lived in London, Ontario before finally settling in Windsor. Five years ago, Michael and Patricia moved to Lethbridge to be near daughter Jane.

Michael and Patricia lead a happy, satisfying life. And now they’re together again.

I’d like to thank the St. Therese Villa staff and caregivers in 2E for their loving care and friendship to Dad and his caregivers who helped him in Windsor.

At Michael’s request, he will be remembered privately by his family and friends. If desired, donations to a charity of one’s choice are appreciated.

Allan Schaaf

1946 – 2021

Allan Clarence Schaaf of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Sandie Schaaf, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2021 at the age of 75 years.

Allan was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and grew up in Scandia helping on the ranch with his family, mostly staying out of trouble. He moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta, where he met and married Sandie, and graduated with a Masters in Entomology. They married in June 1970. Once graduated, he and Sandie moved overseas, living a few adventures in Jamaica and Guyana before coming back to Alberta. They eventually settled in Lethbridge where they raised a family, built a business, taught their kids to camp, and enjoyed the company of many friends near and far. In his spare time, he would almost always be found in the shop with sawdust in his hair or reading another book. After 19 years as business owners, Allan and Sandie were able to retire and enjoy a few more adventures with friends and family.

Allan could be relied upon to help, to share his insight, and make some kind of smart-ass comment.

Allan is predeceased by his father Clarence, and brother Leslie.

Hank Vanee

1950 – 2022

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. – John 11:25

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband and father Hank Vanee. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on March 18, 2022, at the age of 71 years.

A kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, Hank leaves behind his wife Marianne, daughter Wendy (TJ), son Mike (Amber), daughter Vanessa, grandchildren Alisha, Kacee, Cohen, and Millie.

He was predeceased by his parents Reyer and Fennetje Vanee, his brothers Joe, John, Tony, sister Wilma and brothers in-law Maas Van Driesten, Dirk Beekman and Bill Van Driesten. He is survived by his siblings Riek Van Driesten, Dini Vanee (sister-in-law), Matty Vanee (sister-in-law), Janet Vanee, Harry (Lorriane) Vanee, Greta Beekman, Eddie (Gwen) Vanee, Jeanette (Dick) Pols, Rita (Rick) Olson, and Jim (Wendy) Vanee.

Born May 18th, 1950, in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Hank grew up in a large family and eventually settled in Lethbridge. He worked as a New Holland dealer for over 30 years. He deeply valued the lifelong friendships he cultivated with many of his employees and customers over the years. Being a part of the Southern Alberta farming community, the part he loved the most, despite protests from parents, was surprising the children who came to the dealership by giving them a New Holland toy tractor or harvester.

Hank loved to travel and gladly traded in his slippers and sweaters to escape the southern Alberta wind for milder climates like Hawaii. He loved the warm weather and anytime the wind stopped he could be found tending to his perfectly manicured lawn.

His family meant the world to him, and he was forever proud of his children and grandchildren. From taking them for ice-cream to driving them to hockey, Grandpa made sure that each one had every opportunity available to them and he was exceedingly generous and supportive of them all.

Anyone who knew Hank was touched by his kindness, quiet generosity, and mild temperament. He was a friend to all and was always available to listen and give a positive word of encouragement or wisdom.

Hank will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at BETHEL REFORMED CHURCH, AB-3A, Monarch, with Pastor Jan Neels officiating. A private family Interment will be held at the Royal View Cemetery.
