BRATHWAITE-SIMPSON
October 16, 1966 – May 10, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce our beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, Charlene Marie Brathwaite-Simpson, passed away suddenly at home in Raymond, AB during the early morning hours of May 10, 2022 at the age of 55.

Charlene will be lovingly missed by her husband, Standy (Checker) Brathwaite; sons Sean (Kristin) Simpson of Fort Erie, ON and Trey Brathwaite of Raymond, AB; parents Hugh and Carol Simpson of Fort Erie, ON; sister Cherie Simpson-Barber of Fort Erie, ON; brother Hugh Jr. (Laura) Simpson of Raymond, AB as well as many nieces and nephews.

Charlene was predeceased by her daughter Felisha Swann (2017).

Charlene was born and raised in Fort Erie, ON and loved figure skating, crocheting, and cooking in the early years of her life. In the last few years, she couldn’t wait until the warm weather came so that she could get outside more often; she loved camping, gardening and enjoying her firepit in her back yard. Her larger-than-life personality followed her wherever she went, whether it was when she was waitressing or walking down the streets of Raymond with her best friend (and son), Trey. You could always count on Charlene for a laugh, which was infectious and could easily be heard before she was seen. Her gift was her ability to bring hope and happiness to others even through a brief meeting or a passing on the street. She was a ray of sunshine that was always looking to help others and give out hugs to any takers. Though she has passed from this life, the light she left will continue to shine on.

Charlene will be deeply missed by all of us who were blessed to know her.

A Graveside Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday May 18, 2022 at the TEMPLE HILL CEMETERY, Raymond Alberta.

Friends are welcome to meet with the family from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday May 17, 2022 at SALMON AND SONS FUNERAL HOME.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Charlene to: http://mentalhealthfoundation.ca/donate/

HATCH

Our dear mother, Lorna LaRee Broadbent Hatch, of Cardston Alberta, Canada, peacefully passed from this life the day before Mother’s Day on May 7, 2022. Mother has joyfully reunited with our father, David after being apart for 55 years.

Lorna was born on November 23, 1928, in Cardston, Alberta, to William and Emma Broadbent. She was the 7th of 10 children and was raised in Leavitt, Alberta where she loved roaming the hills with family and friends. She attended school in Leavitt and was especially glad to meet David Hatch when she started attending school in Cardston. They were married January 9,1948 and brought 5 loving children to their home on the farm in Woolford, Alberta. She loved crocuses, buttercups and crane bells that we loved picking for her from the hills on our farm. She had a brain tumor when she was 24 years of age and the surgery left her partially paralyzed. Her children loved assisting her and being her little walking stick. She courageously carried on and was a wonderful homemaker, gardener, and nurturer. She helped us love nature, creativity and adventure. She would take us on picnics, berry picking and swimming in the river and to this day we are not sure she could have saved us in the water if necessary.

Mom and Dad moved our family to Riverside, California where new adventures and wonderful friendships were made. We then resettled in Cardston, Alberta to resume family life. She was widowed at a young age and left to finish raising her 5 children. She again faced this with courage and faith and never complained about her physical challenges or the task ahead of raising us on her own.

Mother served in many church callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is known for teaching the 3-year-olds for 26 years. She loved children and they loved her. Grandchildren and many neighborhood children who affectionately called her Aunt Lorna, loved baking with her, playing cards, and picking a toy from her toy drawer.

Mom could scare the hiccups out of anyone and would trick us every time with her April Fools jokes. She was formidable in Scrabble, and we still think she made up words. All were welcome in her home. She was a friend to everyone, especially those who needed a friend. Our family will always remember her when we see her beautiful, crocheted hangers or afghans in our homes. More than physical reminders will be the faith we all draw upon in our own lives. When faced with difficulties we have had a wonderful example in our mother and Grandmother of how to endure and still find joy.

She is predeceased by her loving husband David, parents William and Emma, brothers Delwyn (Melba), Charles (Viola), Keith and Bill, sisters Eda (Dahl Leavitt), Joyce (Lervae Cahoon), Fay (LaVont Marsden), Shirley (Weldon Sillito), son-in-law, Grant Nelson. She is survived by her children: Connie (Grant Nelson, deceased), Dan (Doreen), Judi (Randy Sant), Phil, and Mike (Lois). She is also survived by her sister Thora (Allen Zemp), sister-in-law Doreen Broadbent, 17 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren.

We would like to thank her friends and care givers at the Chinook Lodge and Lee Crest. For many years she also had wonderful care from Dr. Brian Low. Her children were privileged to care for her as well in her declining years. She never went a day without family being with her. We love you Mom and will miss our visits.

Friends may meet the family on Sunday, May 15th, at the Legacy Funeral Home in Cardston from 7:00 to 8:00 pm and on Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 am prior to the service. The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Temple Street Chapel, Cardston, AB., on Monday, May 16th, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the Cardston Cemetery.

RAUHALA

WAYNE LEROY RAUHALA of Lethbridge, born November 6, 1958, passed away suddenly on May 6, 2022.

He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Debbie Rauhala and beloved nephew, Matthew Rauhala.

Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Marion Rauhala, infant brother, Eugene Paul Rauhala, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Tribute to my Uncle

By Matthew Edwin Wayne Rauhala

My uncle enjoyed astronomy, surmising what could be written on a star and watching Starship Enterprise chart them farther than afar.

He treasured his hikes in Waterton, exploring lakes and falls,

loved to stop for bubble gum ice cream inside the creamery walls.

His favorite game was Yahtzee, loved to roll the dice

and when it came time for dinner, it was deep fried shrimp and rice.

He had a passion for Sudokus, was excellent with numbers

but now his book rests dormant and his pencil is in slumber.

My uncle was fond of photography, taking pictures of the world,

today these albums are my memories, neatly organized, pages curled.

Cheering on the Broncos, later watching the Hurricanes score,

viewing movies on the big screen, hearing the Lethbridge Air Show’s roar.

Enjoying 70’s and 80’s music, visits to the Calgary Zoo,

taking trips to Hawaii, Los Angeles and Las Vegas too.

Is it predetermined that which is my fate?

Must I be on time or could I be a little late?

But if this is true and we don’t have a say,

no chance to hang on longer, to see another day,

I’ll remember your true heart, mind and all your selfless giving,

because when you and I were laughing, well uncle, that was living.

The sadness welled inside me when I heard that you had died,

but my fate is to see you again, years from now, on the other side.

Wayne will be remembered privately by his family and friends.

WESTERGREEN

Mary Anne (Wiens) Westergreen passed away Mother’s Day at the Chinook Regional Hospital.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Frank Robert Westergreen, her parents Annie & Henry Wiens, her brother Jake Wiens, her sister Anne Harrington, and her twin sister Dolly (Agnes) Renner.

Mary is survived by her daughters: Janet Voth (Bob), Brenda Zdyb (Stan) all of Coaldale, her grandchildren Charlene Voth, Matthew Voth both of Lethbridge and Chantel Rosenthal (Kevin) of Edmonton. She is also survived by her greatgrandchildren, Calee Parkins (Brayden) of Lethbridge, Marcus Allison and Arayah Dawn Voth both of Edmonton. She is also survived by one brother and two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was born in Swift Current, SK and later relocated to Alberta. She met her husband Frank when they both worked for Doc Tenney in the Warner area. Frank and Mary lived in several different locations due to Franks work requirements but spent most of their married life in Coaldale.

Mary eagerly anticipated the arrival of each new grandchild and great grandchild, each held a special place in her heart.

Mary went to work for Bill Beattie at the Greyhound grill, she worked there for many years and eventually owned and operated this as Marys’ Place. Charlene and Chantel were mini waitresses in training and loved helping Grandma. Mary made many lifelong friends there and employed many of her family members. After Marys’ retirement, she moved to an apartment and managed the 10-unit complex, she formed many friendships there.

Mary was an amazing cook, no one ever left her home without being well fed. She sewed clothes for her family and if there was anything that needed to be patched, she was on it. Franks’ work clothes, Stans’ jeans, kid’s toys, and Charlene’s beloved “Copper” the dog. Bob and a friend Erika both had well-loved monkeys that received a whole new set of clothes.

Mary sewed prom and wedding dresses for others in the neighborhood. She sewed cabbage patch dolls for her grandchildren customizing them as requested. She sewed animals of all kinds. She was the Queen of recycling and repurposing; she was a practical woman, and nothing ever went to waste. Many family members woke to find creations in their flower beds or on their front steps, this was Mary’s way of sharing her special touch.

Mary loved camping and often camped with her siblings, she loved to take her grandchildren with her, nothing was ever too much work when it came to her family.

If you visited Mary there would often be a puzzle in progress on her kitchen table, she played solitaire looking out her dining room window to watch the neighborhood kids travels and antics. These kids made out like bandits at Halloween as she prepped bags weeks in advance. Disney movies and special treats were bought in anticipation of grandchildren’s’ sleepovers. No chores for grandchildren at Grandmas house, and Grandmas taxi service was always available, the meter was never on. Lindsay and Ashleigh were chauffeured to school whenever grandma worried about the weather.

Mary was always so happy to help her family in any way and loved to babysit the grandchildren. She welcomed her grandchildren’s friends into her home as well.

Mary loved Stampede wrestling and was a very vocal fan! She shared this passion with her dad.

Mary treated the grandchildren to trips to Bonanza, Zellers, and Humpty’s. Mary would often turn up in Magrath with ice cream and watermelon on ice in her trunk. Mary LOVED to drive and drive she did: to Bingo, Walmart, Zellers. Road trips to Magrath, Taber, Brooks and Waterton were not uncommon, and she usually had little co-pilots with her. In her later years she often drove twice a day to have a lunch and supper at Humpty’s the staff all knew her well, and she made many friends there.

Marys’ life showed her to be a hard worker, she was made of tough stuff, a loving and nurturing person. She had a quick smile, laughed easily, welcomed visits and was always willing to help anyone in need. Mary loved people and made many friends over the years. She loved her family above all else.

About 5 years ago Mary developed Dementia/Alzheimer’s and moved to the Sunny South Lodge in Coaldale where she resided until her passing. While the dementia stole bits and pieces of her away, her strong spirit and quick smile remained, she was always so happy to have visitors.

Mary’s family is very appreciative to Tricia of TC Care who provided Mary with hours of companionship and interactions this past year.

Mary and her family are forever grateful for the AMAZING care provide to their whole family by all the staff at Chinook Regional Hospital on Unit 4B.

A graveside service will be held May 16, 2022, at 2 pm in the Field of Honor at Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge. Anyone who wishes to attend is most welcome. In memory of Mary there will be a supper at Humpty’s at 4:30 pm.
