ORR

Maureen Margaret Orr, 81, of Orton, Alberta passed away peacefully on Friday, October 8, 2021 at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta. She was born on February 2, 1940 in Calgary, Alberta to John McNally and Patricia Monaghan, the oldest and only daughter of seven children.

Maureen was raised in Calgary with her biological family attending school at Bowview Elementary. At the age of 12, she was adopted by the Vance family from Rosemary, Alberta and attended the Rosemary School. In April of her Grade 11 year, the Vance family moved to Calgary and she finished her schooling that year at Crescent Heights High School. Her Grade 12 year was spent at Queen Elizabeth High School.

On March 27, 1958, Maureen Margaret McNally (Vance) married Lynn Dean Orr in the Cardston Alberta Temple. Together they lived in Calgary, Lethbridge, and in April of 1960, moved to Orton, Alberta where Lynn made his living farming and raising cattle and Maureen was a homemaker.

Maureen was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved the gospel and was always reading and studying it. She had an undaunting faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and always commented, “The Lord has never failed me”. She had an unshakeable testimony and was never afraid to share her beliefs. She had a way about her that she could easily talk to others and was always welcoming to people of all religions. Maureen served two missions with her husband, Lynn; one in 1989 to the Family History Dept in Salt Lake City, Utah and the second, a proselyting/temple mission in 1994 to Atlanta, Georgia.

Maureen was an example of loving others, showing kindness, forgiveness, generosity, and consistently giving all she had to help those in need. She was always donating clothes, toys, or money to the less fortunate, especially to children in need. She had such a kind heart. These attributes were borne out of all she had faced in her life, never complaining about her hardships as a child or health issues she suffered as an adult, but always looked forward with happiness and a good attitude.

Maureen loved her heritage of being Irish. She loved Celtic dancing and Irish music. Never a parade went by that she wasn’t up on her feet and cheering for the pipe bands. She enjoyed searching out her family history and her greatest desire was to find her biological family in Scotland. This finally came true for her the last year or so of her life and she was immensely overjoyed over this in renewing this connection.

Maureen is survived by her children, Bernard Lloyd Orr of Raymond, Alberta, Norma Jean Orr of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Lori LaRee Orr Thomas (Bryan) of Orem, Utah and Joanne Rae Orr Briggs (Jon) of Bountiful, Utah, as well as ten grandchildren (Kristen, Kyle, Tyler, Jordan, Kaitlyn, Jessica, Dylan, Claire, Calli, and Kennadie) and nine great granddaughters (Morgan, Indie, Willa, Rea, Emory, Sienna, Elizabeth, Violet, and Arianna). She is also survived by her brothers, Ronald William MacDonald (Ritzville, WA), James Michael McDonald (Kennewick, WA), and Richard “Rick” Norman Murphy (Taber, Alberta) and her adopted siblings – Paul James Vance (Ottawa, Ontario), Emma Janeen Gough (Balzac, Alberta), Melvin Jay Vance (Orem, UT), Linda Louise White Olsen (Calgary, Alberta) and Peter Douglas Vee Vance (Rigaud, Quebec).

Maureen is preceded in death by her parents, John McNally and Patricia Monaghan (Beisel), her adopted parents, Byron and Jennie Vance, her husband, Lynn Dean Orr, her son, Darren Lynn Orr, her granddaughter, Janelle Frances Harris, her great granddaughter, Paetyn Lynn Thomas, as well as her brothers, Bernard Crawford McNally Wynder, Rand Dennis McNally, and Peter McNally and her adopted brothers – Richard Byron Vance, John Abram Vance and Hugh Vance.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Fort Macleod LDS Church, 643 20th Street, Fort Macleod, Alberta. All friends and family are invited to attend. For those unable to attend, live-streaming of the service will be available as a link and will appear below this obituary, on the web-site, at 10:45 am the morning of the service. Interment was performed previously on October 16, 2021 in the Orton Cemetery.

In 1983, Mike and Margaret moved to a home in Magrath. Even though Mike was “retired,” he spent many hours at the farms helping or watching from his truck to make sure everything was going smoothly.

One of his greatest joys as Grandpa was giving sage advice to his grandkids and handing out Big Red gum and suckers to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 THACKER, Florence

Florence Ann Thacker (nee Heck), affectionately known by her family as “Grandma Goose”, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Monday, July 25, 2022, at the age of 97 years . She was born on September 19, 1924, in Denzil Saskatchewan to Anna Maria Heck, sadly her father Hironymous Heck had passed before her birth. After several years of struggling on a widow’s pension and taking in sewing to make ends meet, a marriage was arranged with Andrew Volk of Burdett who had four children of his own. The newly blended Volk family were active members of the Catholic church community and attended the Jasmine school.

Florence met her husband, George at a dance in Burdett. They were married in 1947 and raised six children; Lynn (Ute), Janis (Meryl) Goodfellow, Jim (Dalyce), Dale (Natalie), Diane (Tim) Main, and Richard. She was predeceased by George in 2019. Florence, with boundless energy, was able to do an incredible amount of work in the home as well as in the fields. In total, she helped raise thirteen grandchildren: Raimey, Nathan, Clint, Reed, Lawnie, Kassie, Martin, Emily, Kyle, Gavin, Brianne, Cam, and Danika. She was able to enjoy in total 24 great-grandchildren.  Florence was an avid ball player and curler. At the age of 50 she found her forever sport… GOLF. This passion for golf led George and Florence to Arizona for 17 winters. Florence never lost her “Heck” sense of humour even in the final years of her life. The family wish to extend their deepest thanks to the staff at the Bow Island Long Term Care facility and to the staff at the Pleasant View Lodge. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Burdett Hall on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 2:00 p.m.  Everyone is invited to wear their favorite Golf attire in honour of Florence. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Bow Island and District Health Foundation c/o Long Term Care, Bow Island Health Centre, P.O. Bag 3990, Bow Island, Alberta, T0K 0G0 or the Pleasant View Lodge c/o Auxiliary Comfort Fund, P.O. URASAKI

It is with great sorrow that we announce that Roy Masayoshi Urasaki, passed away on Saturday, January 15th, 2022 at the age of 83 years, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Roy is survived by his son Jim (Cindy) and their children Jenna and Kobe, his daughter Rumi and her children Evian, Ocean and Skyy and their father Miro Kyjac. He is pre-deceased by his loving wife, Shizuko, and his son, George.

Dad was born in Yomitan, Okinawa, Japan on November 25, 1938. He was the oldest of a family of eight children and grew up in the aftermath of WWII. He went to post-secondary school in Tokyo and eventually finished his degree at Okinawa International University.

Dad worked at a variety of jobs as a young man. He was a guard at a USMC base, teacher, newspaper reporter and as a civilian employee in the supply and human resources unit at Camp Butler in Okinawa. His many conversations with American co-workers influenced him to move overseas and after Dad and Mom got married in 1966, they bravely decided to leave Okinawa to start a new life.

Without any prior training as a welder, he eventually earned his journeyman certificate through Lethbridge Community College in the early 1970s. He was employed for many years at Neufeld Industries (Haul All) and enjoyed working with the people there. His practical skills were put to good use at home and we always benefited from his help too. Weekends were often spent fishing, reading, writing in his journal or working on small projects. He was a long-time member of the Okinawan Cultural Society and that part of his identity was never forgotten. Upon retirement, he and Mom intended to travel more and spend time with their grandchildren. Life circumstances sometimes got in the way of those plans but he worked through those challenges with dignity and perseverance. He spent many years taking care of Mom and he found it to be an adjustment when others had to take care of him. He was proud of his grandchildren’s achievements in their activities such as karate, dance, hockey, rodeo and academics and he always encouraged them to work hard to get what they wanted.

Dad passed away with his children at his side and we appreciate the care that he received at Gardenview Lodge, Jack Ady Cancer Centre and Fairmont Extendicare. We are especially thankful for the palliative care that he received from Dr. Smuts and nurse Nena Robertson.

The family would like to extend our gratitude for the gifts of koden and expressions of sympathy.

According to Roy’s wishes, a private family service has been held and his ashes have been buried at Royal View Cemetery.

WAMBOLDT, Reginald

Reginald Leland Wamboldt, 72, passed away on July 5th, 2022, at Chinook Regional Hospital, surrounded by loved ones after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by the mother of his children Diana (Pittman) Melnyk of Red Deer, their three children, Christina Wamboldt, Austin Wamboldt, Alisha (Riley) Edwards and three granddaughters. He also shared many years and memories with his former spouse Dolores Leah Brown, and her two daughters, Amedee and Madeleine Waters.

Reg was born in Montreal and grew up in St Lambert, Quebec with parents Reginald and Edna Wamboldt and his younger siblings Kathleen and Danny. He was predeceased by his Mother when he was 14, his Dad and brother more recently.

Right after graduating he went to work answering telephones on the old Canadian stock exchange. Working as a clerk and later as a floor trader and bond trader, he spent 9 years attending night classes to earn a commerce degree from Concordia University. He worked on the Vancouver and Montreal stock exchanges before relocating to Alberta and working on the Alberta Stock Exchange floor in 1987. After leaving the Calgary stock exchange he continued his career in finance working his way up to a VP at TD Waterhouse. He also began investing in real estate, where he was committed to providing tenants with a safe and comfortable home.

He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1981, and though eventually became inactive, he considered himself “LDS in his heart” until the end.

Reg loved cycling, hiking and mountain locations, however his favourite place to be was Montana. He spent many summers in Montana at Blaine and Echo Lake with his family. He had a love for Canadian art and enjoyed adding to his collection over the years. Luxury and unique cars were of special interest, and he enjoyed car shows and sports cars.

Reg loved life and was a pillar of strength and support for those around him. He was a devoted and caring father and loved his granddaughters. He was a character of his own and will be dearly missed by many. We wish he could have stayed with us longer, but we know he lives on in our hearts, until we meet again.
