CARPENTER

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of ELINOR FAITH CARPENTER on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at the age of 81 years after an exhaustive battle with cancer.

Elinor left behind her daughter Stacey, son Scott, three granddaughters Ashton, Skye, Shyla and her great-grandson Haedon.

Elinor was the strongest woman we knew. Friends and family saw her as the person to go to for any kind of advice, for a good laugh and a quick dose of reality (she never held back in giving her opinion, which was usually right). Elinor was always working on some new quilting project. She made sure that everyone in her immediate family had a beautiful piece of her quilting art to keep. She also was an amazing mentor and teacher to other quilters. Her love of quilting and knack for teaching brought amazing women into a close-knit quilting club. Mom loved the women in this group and cherished her time with them. Mom had many amazing friends (too numerous to mention) who were a great part of her life. You all meant so much to her and we thank you for the love and support you showed her. Please have a glass a wine in her honor (no wine is before its time! Is what she used to say)! Special thanks to Dr. Walsh, Denise, the palliative team, the Jack Ady Cancer Centre, and homecare for their heartfelt care.

At Elinor’s request there will be no Funeral Service. Donations can be made in Elinor’s name to the Jack Ady Cancer Centre – 960 19th St. S., Lethbridge, AB T1J 1W5.

She was also an active and devoted member of Southminster United Church serving as a mentor, volunteer for various events and service projects and a board member for many years. Joyce was known and loved by many for all that she always offered to others. She loved to host and entertain, and you would often find her playing dice, watching hockey and listening to her favorite old country music songs. Her grandchildren have many fond memories growing up being at her house often and enjoying the backyard swimming pool.

She loves flowers and gardening and was always so proud of her yard. She had many pets over the years and loved to take care of animals. She was a fierce fan of the Edmonton Oilers. And back in the day she sure loved her square dancing!

Joyce was the matriarch of her family and a hub for many in our community. She was always a safe and warm gathering place, happy to provide an ear and a smile. She felt a calling to serve the less fortunate and served those who needed her tirelessly. She never held a grudge, never turned anyone away, and was always generous and welcoming. Joyce lived her life with an open and generous heart and was a beloved mother, grammie, great-grammie, sister, aunt, wife and friend.

Harlow Donovan Otto

April 11, 1955 – August 31, 2022

It is with profound sadness that the family of Harlow Donovan Otto announce his passing on August 31, 2022, at the age of 67 years.

Harlow was the third of six children to Violet and Allister Otto and was raised on their family farm near Elkwater. At an early age, Harlow developed a strong work ethic and an aptitude for farming and business. He became an integral part of the Otto farming operation. Harlow developed into an entrepreneur with savvy business skills. He was well known in farming circles as an innovator implementing new farming and ranching techniques. In fact, Harlow sold steers on the day he passed.

Harlow ran a tight ship and his meticulous nature was well known. It was often said that you could eat off the floors of his tractors.

As much as Harlow loved the business of ranching, his greatest accomplishment was as a steward of the land. His love of farming was not deterred by two very serious farm accidents, neither of which defeated him. Even when his mobility failed, he was driven to his properties and he made sure to inspect every blade of grass. But Harlow was not all business and farming, he was a jokester, he had a sharp sense of humour, and would tease everyone he met.

Harlow was the loving spouse of Lori Andreachuk for 22 years, the father to his beloved puppy Coco Chanel, and his two daughters Maegan Otto and Lauren Otto. Survived by his father, Allister Otto of Medicine Hat; siblings Gerald (Renetta) Otto of Elkwater, Dolores Otto-Moreno of Colton California, Clifford (Val) Otto of Medicine Hat, Marilyn (John) Dunn of Medicine Hat, Sheila (Colin) Clark of 108 Mile Ranch BC; and stepfather Joe Stenger of Medicine Hat; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Harlow was predeceased by his mother Violet Stenger and infant son Landon Otto.

Special thanks to the staff of Medicine Hat Home Care. If you wish to make a donation in Harlow’s memory, please donate to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada by visiting mssociety.ca.

A public graveside service will be held on Friday, September 9 at 1:00 PM at Hillside Cemetery Medicine Hat with a remembrance reception to follow at the Carriage House Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede 2:00PM-4:00PM. Public viewing will be held at Grace Memorial Medicine Hat on Thursday, September 8 between 6:00PM-8:00PM

DR. HUGH STEWART

From the time his eldest brother Gary announced he wanted to become a physician, Hugh determined that medicine would be his path as well. For 36 dedicated years, Dr Hugh Verlin Stewart practiced Medicine in Southern Alberta, impacting thousands of patients and colleagues. On Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at the age of 75, Dr Stewart passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.

Hugh was born on a bitter, cold December 3rd of 1946, the third of 5 boys to Karless “Curly” and Della Jensen Stewart. Growing up on the family farm in Jefferson, AB for most of his childhood, he lived a full and busy life. Helping with chores, playing sports, and reading were among his favourite pastimes. He graduated from Cardston High School, then attended Mount Royal College. His drive to pursue Medicine never wavered and he graduated from Medical School from the University of Alberta in 1970. He completed his internship in Calgary at Holy Cross Hospital before he and his first wife Ramona moved to Cardston to raise their growing family. Hugh made sure they took time to enjoy the great outdoors. Canoeing, fishing and golfing trips, riding dirt bikes at the farm, and trips to Waterton and Gabriola are cherished memories with his children.

As well as being a devoted doctor, Hugh enjoyed serving his community. In Cardston, he was elected to the Town Council and fulfilled a 5 year term. After moving to Lethbridge, he achieved the status of Captain in the Canadian Forces and was a member of the 20th Independent Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery. He served for 20 years in that capacity.

After 30 years of providing diligent and compassionate care to his patients at Family Medical Centre, Hugh’s own health issues forced his retirement in 2006. Gratefully, he could still enjoy a round of golf, a day of fishing, or a drive to the farm. He had fond memories of traveling, and especially loved the time he spent out at the Pacific Coast. A happy highlight occurred in December 2013 when he and Dora Castillo wed. They have enjoyed a lively life together, filled with laughter, many dog walks, watching Star Trek and outings with family and friends.

Left to mourn him are his devoted wife, Dora Castillo, his children Shannon (Brian) Gillis, Cameron (Ara Jorgenson), Bruce (Amy), Robert, Heather (Justin) Jubber; stepsons Igor (Lisa) Castillo and Boris (Mari) Arroyo, numerous grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers Calvin (Anne) and Randy (Lynda). He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Gary and Donald and daughter in law Roxy Stewart.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all those who assisted in any aspect of Hugh’s care, especially in his last days at the ICU in Lethbridge.

The Funeral Service will be held Wednesday September 7, 2022 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, FAIRMONT CHAPEL, 205 Fairmont Blvd South, Lethbridge at 11:00am. Friends may meet the family from 10-10:45, prior to the Service.
