JANUS, Gudrun GUDRUN JANUS Dec. 5 1944 – March 3 2023 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother at her home on Friday, March 3. Left to remember her are her children Markus (Tracey), Matthias (Anna), Stefanie, and Sandra (Scott), and grandchildren Cole, Chase, Quentin, Ben, and Wesley. She is also survived by her brother, Klaus Schurmann.
Gudrun and her family immigrated to Canada in 1982, first settling in Lethbridge. For forty years she was an active member of the community, known for her kindness and generosity. She made many friends over the years as she was always ready to extend a helping hand. Her door was always open, and her kitchen was always brimming with treats for visitors.
Gudrun was a woman who embraced acting in the service of others. She was the heart and soul of the German Canadian Club kitchen which she ran for over 20 years.
During that time she maintained a full time position, most recently working at Edith Cavell Care Centre.
For those who knew her well, her candour and forthrightness will be missed.

MOUNTAIN HORSE, Bernadine MOUNTAIN HORSE BERNADINE MOUNTAIN HORSE, Míínaakíí, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends at Lethbridge Regional Hospital, February 28th 2023, at the age of 74. Bernadine was born to the late Jack Mountain Horse and Louise Mountain Horse. She received her education at St. Pauls residential school and was also a home maker. Bernadine met Clarence Little Shields and together had five children. Gordy, Deanna, Micheal, Edward and Timmy. They later separated, and she went on to meet the love of her life, Harley Morning Bird. They eventually adopted Leah and Cameron Crazy Bull. They were together until Harley’s passing in 2016. Bernadine liked to bead and make dancing regalia for her family. She traveled with her son Edward to pow wows throughout Canada and the US. She loved to barbecue and spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She was rarely seen without her great granddaughter, Mia. She liked to dance and have fun at family events. She would always make people laugh with her silly and goofy ways. Bernadine is survived by her two living sons and adopted daughter; Edward (Rae), Timmy (Amanda), Leah (Terrence), Grandchildren; Ross, Jack, Melvin, Renea, Dakota, J-Bek, Miley, Sharlee, Aliyah, Cameron, Tinika, Tyrrell, Ozzy, Zeke and Kristopher, Adopted Grandchildren; Dustin, Jade, Keyshaun, Makayla and Carrie, Great Grandchildren; Mia, Anson, Jorrie, Carmen, Kingston, Kingsley, Kireese, Kinlynn, Cashis, Ariel, Brody, Cameron Jr., Aiden and Grayson, Adopted sisters; Loretta Singer, Pauline Steinhauer and Shirley Tall Man. As well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Adopted brothers; Greg Plain Woman and Gordy Plain Woman. Bernadine is predeceased by her parents Jack Mountain Horse and Louise Mountain Horse. Spouses Clarence Little Shields and Harley Morning Bird. Infant sister Kathrine and adopted sister Jenny. Children Gordy, Deanna and Michael. Grandchildren Cohen and Tabitha.
A Wake Service will be held at Senator Gladstone Hall, Blood Reserve on Friday, March 10 from 6:00 – 11:00 pm and continuing all night at Bernadine’s residence. The Funeral Service will be held at Senator Gladstone Hall on Saturday, March 11 at 11:00 am. Interment will take place in St. Paul’s cemetery.

QUANTZ, Amanda AMANDA “CARTER” RAELYN QUANTZ 1979 – 2023 Miss Amanda “Carter” Quantz, of Lethbridge, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in her home on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the age of 43 years. She will be dearly missed by all of her friends.
Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels. As per Amanda’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service held.

BAKER, Randal BAKER Randal Wade Baker, beloved husband of Sharon Baker of Raymond, passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at the age of 58 years.

HURT, Jeffery JEFFERY HURT 1971 – 2022 Jeff Hurt of Lethbridge, beloved son of Blair and Carol Hurt and father to Tanner and Graysen, passed away suddenly after a short illness, at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at the age of 51 years.

JACKSON, Elizabeth “Betty” JACKSON It is with a heavy heart that the family of ELIZABETH “BETTY” ANN JACKSON announce her passing on Monday March 6, 2023, at the St Michael’s Health Centre, at the age of 100 years.
She is lovingly remembered by her children, Carol (Wayne) Neilson, Michael (Tammy) Jackson, Julie (Gary) Pike, David (Tamara) Jackson, Bev (Alan Gajdostic) Jackson as well as grandchildren, great- grandchildren and extended family members.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, husband, two sisters and two brothers-in-law.
Betty was born December 10, 1922, in Regina Saskatchewan, the second of three daughters to Oliver and Merle Bright. The family lived in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan during Betty’s early years and then returned to Regina.
In 1942 Betty met and fell in love with Victor Sydney Jackson, an RAF Spitfire pilot from the Fiji Islands. They married December 31, 1943 and Victor was sent to England to train other pilots. After WWII ended Vic returned to Fiji from England and Betty set off on the adventure of a lifetime. Having never been away from home, she bravely journeyed alone to Fiji where she joined husband Vic. Together they raised 5 children, Carol, Michael, Julie, David and Beverley. In 1961 the family emigrated to Lethbridge, Alberta and reunited with Betty’s family. They continued to live in and around the Lethbridge area, but their happiest years were those spent on their acreages at Kipp and Diamond City.
Betty will be remembered by her family and friends as a dedicated mother and a kind, compassionate and loving person. Nothing made her happier than visitors or family popping in for a cup of tea, cookie and a chat. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, nature and had a deep love for animals.
Her family wish to acknowledge the special friendships Betty formed during the years she lived in Nobleford. She treasured each and every relationship and was forever grateful to the incredible kindness extended to her. Many happy times were shared over countless cups of tea and cookies and Betty felt like she was part of a big family.
A heartfelt thank you is also extended to the residents, staff and management of Pemmican Lodge for the love and care she received in the latter years of her life that she spent there.
Betty’s family would also like to thank the Doctors and nursing staff at the Chinook Regional Hospital and St Michael’s Health Centre for their excellent care and compassion. Their dedication and comforting words made this journey easier to bear for the family.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers and in memory of Betty to an animal rescue or an animal shelter organization.

BABIN, Eric BABIN ERIC RICHARD BABIN, of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Nancy Babin, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at the age of 46 years.

1934 – 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daisy Oshiro in Lethbridge with family by her side on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at the age of 88 years.
A private Burial Service was held at Taber Memorial Garden on Saturday, January 28, 2023.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of sixty seven years, Jim; their children Carlee Oshiro-Fallis of Calgary, Darrell (Jennifer) Oshiro of Vernon, Carol (Dan) Merkle of Lethbridge and Jaylene Oshiro of Calgary; grandchildren Cole, Chase, Cali (Tyson), Kayla, Graydon (Katie), and Courtney. Daisy is also survived by her brothers Sat (Shirley) and Wayne; sisters-in-law Ty, May and Yas as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Kiichi and Tsuruyo Maruyama; siblings Tuck, Ken, Jack, Jane, Gen, Norma, Katy, and Paul; sisters-in-law Marge, Lorraine and Anna Mae; brother-in-law Tak Kano.
Daisy was born March 18, 1934, in Fraser Mills, British Columbia. She moved to southern Alberta where she later met and married Jim Oshiro on November 10, 1955. Together, they raised their four children in Taber. Daisy was a stay-at-home mom until all her children were attending school. She returned to work at Alberta Agriculture and was a RITE operator for the Government of Alberta until she retired in 1988.
Daisy and Jim spent their early retirement years in the Okanagan, British Columbia, making Vernon and Kelowna their home for almost eight years. In 1996, they returned to southern Alberta, residing in Coaldale for eighteen years before settling in Lethbridge in 2014.
Daisy was full of kindness and generosity. She loved being of service and enjoyed her time volunteering with the Taber 4H Club, Coaldale Continuing Care Centre and the Vernon Funjinkai. Daisy embraced and found much joy in her crafts and hobbies. From origami and doll making, to crocheting and quilting, she was delighted to share her beautiful creations with family and friends. She also loved to bake and took pride in mastering some amazing recipes, that are still loved by her family.
Daisy enjoyed curling, golfing, entertaining and meeting new people. She loved to laugh, and treasured the time spent with family and friends. Family visits were never complete without a few rounds of cards and board games, that went late into the night with plenty of eats and laughs. Remembering her walks with her sister-in-law Grace and her granddaughter Courtney, always put a smile on her face. Daisy especially loved to spoil her grandchildren with all of their favourite things.
