OSAKA, Yumiko OSAKA It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear sister-in-law, aunt, and great-aunt – Yumiko Mary Osaka – on November 6, 2023.
Yumiko was born in British Columbia and was the daughter of Sumi and Sakuji Kanegawa of Hiroshima, Japan.
She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband Hughie, in addition to her four sisters and two brothers: Shizuko, Sadako, Misako, Yoshiko, Stanley, and Richard.
She is survived by her sister-in laws Suyeko Kanegawa (Richard) and Eleanor Katakami (Kozie) and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Despite the hardships she endured, especially during the years of the Japanese Canadian evacuation, she was grateful for her life and talents.
She was praised for her baking of pies and jelly rolls, cooking mochi, manju, and flower sushi.
Her singing was admired by the community. Her proudest moment was being requested to sing anthems. She sang with the church choir, Red Hat group, and at Palliative and Senior Centres. She was an entertainer!
She was bilingual. She travelled to many countries with her Hughie, but her pride was hiking Machu Picchu, Peru.
Our memory was that she was fun and fashionable. She will be remembered for her humor, enthusiasm, and her love of bling.
Funeral is November 15 at 10:30 A.M. at the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta.
In lieu of flowers and Koden, donations to the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta or Chinook Regional Hospital in Yumiko’s honour will be greatly appreciated.

SHURTZ, Nola In Loving Memory of Nola (Orr) Shurtz Nola (Orr) Shurtz, a beacon of love and warmth, passed away on November 8, 2023, at the age of 90, surrounded by the love of her family at the Good Samaritan Prairie Ridge supported living facility in Raymond, Alberta.
Born on September 24, 1933, in Cardston, Alberta, Nola’s life journey was marked by love, dedication, and a profound impact on those fortunate enough to know her. Her life was a testament to enduring love and service. She is survived by her children Terry (Craig) Clifton, Delon (Sue), and Dan (Connie), sister Verda (Bill) Perkinson, 18 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Byron Alfred Shurtz, daughter Kim (Jim) Malacko, son Barry, parents Amos (Gramps) and Lavon (Granny) Orr, brother Dale (Peggy), and sister Wilma. Remarkably, her sister Myrna Poitier passed away only three days after she did.
Nola and Byron’s love story began in October 1952 when they were married in Lethbridge. Their union was later sealed in the Cardston temple. Together, they faced life’s challenges, and while Byron served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Eastern Canada, Nola supported him by working as a telephone operator.
The couple’s passion for dance left an indelible mark on the community. For many years, Byron and Nola taught ballroom dancing, imparting their skill and joy to countless individuals across Western Canada. Their legacy lives on in the dance steps of those who waltz, jive, and foxtrot with grace, thanks to their guidance.
Nola’s love for music found expression in her membership in the Sweet Adelines for many years. She also took joy in watching and hearing her children sing, creating beautiful harmonies that echoed the melody of family unity.
Waterton Lakes National Park held a special place in Nola’s heart, where she frequently rented a cabin for her children, their spouses, and grandchildren, fostering cherished memories surrounded by the beauty of nature.
Nola was not only a loving mother but also a great cook and baker. Everyone relished her chili, a special treat during the family gatherings to watch the Raymond parade pass by her house each summer. Her homemade pizza and fudge were also cherished favorites, a testament to the warmth and love she poured into everything she did.
An avid basketball fan, Nola found great joy in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play. She also cherished moments spent watching the Toronto Raptors, and rarely missed a game.
Family viewing will be from 6:30-7:00 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2023, and friends may meet the family from 7:00-8:00 p.m. or before the funeral service on Saturday, November 18, 2023, from 9:30-10:15 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Taylor Street Chapel, 221 N. 400 W., Raymond, Alberta. The funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Pres. Greg Fode officiating. Interment to follow at the Temple Hill Cemetery, Raymond, Alberta.
