KALICUM, Marion

Marion Kalicum (nee Yanke) A Life of Love and Legacy Marion Kalicum, known lovingly as “Nanny” to all, born Marian Yanke on April 8, 1932, in Lethbridge, Alberta, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2023, near Nanaimo, British Columbia. A remarkable woman whose life was a rich tapestry of love, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her family, Marion leaves a legacy of strength and compassion. Survived by her daughters Loretta and Peggy, her six grandchildren Leslie, Kimberly, William, Derrick, Jeremy, and Michael, and great-grandchildren Claire, Eden, Ashton, Iris, and Hendrik. Predeceased by her husband Frederick, sons Ronald and Leroy, and her siblings, Marion’s spirit remains a guiding light.
Marion’s enduring love and commitment to her family were her greatest triumphs. She was instrumental in establishing Kalicum Drilling, the family business, by ensuring her home was a haven of warmth and generosity, always with a humorous reminder: “You need to eat!” Known for her elegant style and boundless energy, she relished in activities like curling, golf, yoga, group fitness, and lawn bowling.
Her grandchildren, who often found solace and guidance in her presence, remember her as the person who was always there for them, the heart of their family. She played an invaluable role in their upbringing, imparting wisdom, love, and the occasional extra serving of her famous dishes.

SKRETTING, Janet

SKRETTING Janet Lyn Skretting was born on April 15, 1964 in the Chinook Regional Hospital to parents, Carol (nee: Wright) and Edwin Skretting. She passed away in the same Hospital, on Saturday, December 30, 2023, a few months shy of her 60th birthday.
For those who wish to pay their respects, a visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with memories shared at 7:00 p.m. at Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home, 703-13 Street North, Lethbridge.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at the Enchant Community Hall, with burial to follow in the Enchant Cemetery. In tribute to our mother, we encourage everyone to wear what makes you feel great and brings you joy.

SERA, Elizabeth


ELIZABETH SERA 1926 – 2024 Mrs. Elizabeth Sera of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Alex Sera passed away at Legacy Lodge on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the age of 97 years.
Elizabeth was born in Hungary on March 18, 1926. In the 1930’s, she and her family emigrated to Canada and settled in the Magrath area of Southern Alberta. She married the love of her life on May 24, 1945. She and her loving husband Alex purchased a farm together in Coaldale where they raised six children. The farm produced award winning purebred Angus cattle, sugar beets, and grain. In 1972, they sold the family farm and moved to Lethbridge. With their retirement they enjoyed many cold Alberta winters motor-homing in Arizona. Elizabeth’s greatest pride was in her family and enjoying her children and grandchildren. She felt very fortunate to have been blessed with a fulfilling life and 65 years of marriage with her husband Alex. Her life was defined by always selflessly being there for others.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Carolyn Handsaeme, and sons Ron (Darlene), Allen (Dorothy), Bob (Evelyn), Richard (Carrie), son-in-law Albert Medve, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Alex, eldest daughter Shirley Medve, and son-in-law Clair Handsaeme.

ROGAN, Ernest

ERNEST ROGAN 1928 – 2023 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ernest Rogan, beloved husband of the late Anna Rogan, who left us peacefully on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at St. Therese Villa.
At the age of 95, Ernest’s remarkable journey through life has come to an end, leaving behind a legacy of cherished moments and a lifetime of memories.
Ernest was born on December 8, 1928, in the village Gornji Slaveči, Slovenia to Franc and Cecilija Rogan. While growing up, he gained a deep Catholic faith, finding strength and purpose in his beliefs. Ernest gained a great knowledge in bricklaying and after completing his apprenticeship, he continued to refine his craftmanship and dedication to the trade. Not only were Ernest’s hands skilled in the art of bricklaying, but he also found joy tending to his garden.
In 1955, Ernest married the love of his life Anna, and together they immigrated to Canada settling in Lethbridge, AB in pursuit of a brighter future. They embarked on a journey of courage and determination, leaving his parents and sisters behind. In 1958 they welcomed their only child Ernest Jr.
Ernest was predeceased by his parents Franc and Cecilija; his wife Anna; son Dr. Ernest Rogan and his wife Anne; brother in-law Stefan Zrim; and sister-in-law Marija Miholič.
Ernest will be greatly missed by his sister-in-law Emilia Zrim in Lethbridge; sister-in-law Terezija Sukič in Slovenia; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and Slovenia.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am, on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 2405 12 Ave S, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Father Kevin Tumback, celebrant.
Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

INNES, Joan

INNES It is with deep sadness that the family of JOAN INNES announce her peaceful passing at the Chinook Regional Hospital, on Monday, December 4, 2023.
Joan is survived by her son, Mark (Beth) of Calgary, and her son-in-law, John Stanek of Red Deer, in addition to four grandchildren — Lauren Stanek, Matthew Stanek, Aubrey Innes and Adelee Innes.
She was predeceased her siblings including Jerry Traviss, Judy McEvoy and Jean Wynn.
Joan was the first of four children born to Charlie and Grace Traviss in Penticton in 1932.
For all those who have been fortunate to know Joan, it was her sense of humour that set her apart. She had a lifetime of love and fun with her friends, family and Bridge Clubs (hope she doesn’t owe anyone any money…haha).
Joan volunteered for 25 years at Lethbridge Regional Hospital and St. Michael’s Health Centre. Friends will also know that Joan, through her husband, Jack, was involved in Eastern Star for more than 20 years. Jack passed away in December 1999, and was Joan’s life-long friend and sweetheart. They raised two children, Leslie Stanek (deceased) and Mark Innes.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Joan at NIKKA YUKO JAPANESE GARDEN, 835 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, January 12th, 2024, from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

HELGESSON, Lorraine

Lorraine Rita HELGESSON (Demeo) June 24, 1952 – January 6, 2024 Mrs. Lorraine Rita Helgesson, beloved wife of Stefan Helgesson, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on January 6, 2024, at the age of 71.
As well as her husband Stefan, Lorraine is survived by her brothers Tom (Heather) Demeo, Michael Demeo, sister Louisa Demeo, Aunt Maria Fogolin, as well as her nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents; Eugenio and Florence Demeo.
Born and raised in Trail, B.C., Lorraine ventured with a friend to Lethbridge, AB when in her early 20s after completing nursing school. This is where she met the love of her life, Stefan Helgesson. They married in 1987. Lorraine was a dedicated LPN and spent years working at St. Michaels Health Centre and Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge.
She will be missed.
