HUGHES, Shirley HUGHES, Shirley Marina January 19, 1935 – March 13, 2024 Shirley Hughes (nee Thompson), beloved wife of David W. Hughes, for almost sixty-seven years, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at the age of 89. Shirley was born on January 19, 1935, and was raised in Calgary, before moving to Lethbridge with David in 1960, where their three children were born and raised. They moved back to Calgary in 2021.
Shirley made a lifetime commitment to be a loving wife and devoted mom, whose top priority was her children. She enjoyed her many years as a member of the Family YMCA, participating in family swims, playing racquetball, and watching her children taking swimming lessons. Shirley was also a member of the Lethbridge Country Club and enjoyed golfing and socializing with her friends. For many years she was an active member of the Kinette Club and was also active at her church as a member of the Sanctuary Guild both in Calgary and Lethbridge.
Shirley loved reading, playing cards, and board games especially Word Search, Solitaire, Canasta, Scrabble and Backgammon. She was an enthusiastic follower of the Calgary Flames, whether seeing them in person or on TV (she was known to occasionally yell at the TV) and she enjoyed watching tennis. She also loved travelling and seeing the world by going on cruises and travelling by land or air. When David retired, they enjoyed their time in Arizona, California, and Montana.
Shirley was a kind and generous person and with David made many charitable donations to various organizations in Lethbridge. Education and youth programs were high priorities.
Along with her loving husband David, she is survived by their three children: Brenda Hughes, her husband Jim Duggan, with their son Ryan; Gail and Trevor Lamb with their two sons, Dean and Troy (Brie) – Dean and Troy called Shirley “Maga”, and she loved this special name; Michael and Maxine Hughes with their daughter Rachel; her brother-in-law Murray Hughes, sister-in-law Catherine Hughes, and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley is predeceased by her parents, William and Evelyn Thompson; her father and mother-in-law, Douglas and Ruby Hughes; sister Gladys Kunsch, brothers, William Thompson and Gordon Thompson; brothers-in-law, Don Hughes and Wilhelm Kunsch; along with sisters-in-law, Shirley Hughes, Norah Thompson, and Shirley Thompson; and nephew Bill Thompson.
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in memory of Shirley directly to St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, 411-11 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 2N9, Telephone: 403-327-3970,

HOWELL, Harold HOWELL September 27, 1937 – March 14, 2024 HAROLD HOWELL, beloved husband of the late C. Ermine Howell, passed away at. St. Michael’s Health Centre – Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 14th, 2024, of the age of 86 years. Harold had been struggling with failing health for many years.
Harold is survived by his children: Julienne (Daniel) Dyck, Suzanne (Michael) Heggaton and Joanne (Darrell) Peters; grandchildren: Tammy, Terry, Allan (Toni), Alyssa (Darcy), Andrew (Cass), Stephen (Josie), Johnathon (Maddy) and Sarah as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren that he loved dearly. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Wales.
Harold is finally back with his wife Ermine, and joins his Mum, Elsie Howell (née Parry) and Dad, Harold Howell and his brother David Howell.
Harold was born September 27, 1937, in Flint, North Wales. He fell in love with his soul mate Ermine Howell (Eccles) in 1955 and they married on August 27, 1958. Harold enlisted into the British army in 1958 and became a Welsh Guard. While stationed in Germany in 1962, Ermine became pregnant with twins, and went back home to deliver them. Then in 1964, Ermine returned to Wales from Germany for the birth of their last child. They had a perfect family with three girls. Harold was a bricklayer by trade.
The family immigrated to Canada in 1975 and started our new lives in Gimli, Manitoba. In 1977, the family moved to our forever home in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Harold worked for many years as a bricklayer, then he worked for Canadian Linen until he started with Lethbridge Housing Authority as head maintenance man for over 20 years.
He then retired when he and Mum bought Aslan Daycare in 1989. He loved doing the maintenance, building furniture for the daycare, which we still use daily. He loved being called Grandad every time one of the children saw him. He also was the main man especially at paydays. After the passing of our Mum (Ermine) he continued to keep the family atmosphere of caring about not only the children but the ladies that have worked for Aslan over the last 35 years.
In 2018, he underwent a double by-pass, which he never fully recovered from. The last couple of years, he was in congestive heart failure which he battled with strength and determination. Even though he couldn’t do everything he used to, he still loved to go Glamping and doing the paperwork for Aslan.
All our family had time to spend with him, there are no regrets that he didn’t know how much everyone loved him.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 10:30 A.M. with Pat Siedlecki officiating.
