Raymond High School Comets senior girls basketball player Delaney Gibb had the opportunity to participate in the Biosteel All Canadian Games last weekend in Toronto.

The Games took the top 24 male and female Canadian high school basketball players and brought them to Toronto to work with Canadian coaches in multiple on and off court events such as training, practices and scrimmages in front of NBA scouts and general managers.

“The first day I got there was Friday (April 1) and that was kind of like our media day,” she said.

“So when I got there, I got gear and our jerseys and they had photographers set up. So they took pictures of us in our jerseys and then we had lunch, dinner and stayed at the hotel that day.”

Day two saw the players get in the gym to practice with their teams.

“We had a short scrimmage and then Sunday we had the game, which was streamed on TSN and then they had interviewers for different players before the game and after the game and just a whole bunch of good stuff,” said Gibb.

Gibb said she learned quite a bit.

“It was mainly just really cool to be able to play against the best players in all of Canada … But one of the biggest things I learned was probably to compete wherever I am — like it was such a high level — but I was still able to like work hard and control all the things I’m able to control. So, don’t focus on if my shots are falling kind of thing, but just like working hard and pushing the ball.”

Gibb was nervous at first being  one of the three Grade 10s at the event.

“Obviously I was a little nervous at first,” she said.

“But mainly I was just ready to compete and prove what I can do because I knew lots of the girls, I played with them, and I knew that I could fit in and I knew that I could compete with them.”

Her focus now the weekend is complete is to work and grow her skills and abilities.

“Hopefully be able to play in this game again next year,” she said.

She wants to play at the college level as well as for the national team one day.
