Westrop, Keith earn MVP honours

The Southern Alberta High School Basketball League named its individual award winners and staged its annual All-Star games Wednesday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.
Named as this year’s girls Varsity Most Valuable Player was Katie Keith of the Chinook Coyotes, while Saren Westrop of the LCI Rams was named as the boys Varsity Most Valuable Player.
The league also named the boys and girls varsity and junior varsity coaches of the year.
Taking home the girls Junior Varsity Coach of the Year was Jarom Phillips of the Cardston Cougars, while Steve Quinton, also from Cardston, won the girls Varsity Coach of the Year award.
On the boys side, Mike Rasmussen of the Medicine Hat Mohawks earned the Junior Varsity Coach of the Year, while Kevin Quinton of Cardston was honoured as the Varsity Coach of the Year.
The boys and girls first and second-team all stars were also named.
Earning a spot on the Girls First-Team All-Star roster were Teesha Olson (Magrath Pandas), Melissa Olsen (Cardston Cougars), Bailey Nelson (Cardston Cougars), Teyah Weir (Raymond Comets) and Leah Ekubazgi (Winston Churchill Bulldogs), while Haylee Ralph (Raymond Comets), Jenna Spruyt (Medicine Hat Kwahommies), Jessica Zarowny (LCI Rams), Isabel Rattai (Medicine Hat Kwahommies) and Katessa Gross (Taber W.R. Myers Rebels) were named to the Second All-Star team.
Named to the boys First Team All-Star roster was Tanner Quinton (Cardston Cougars), Tim McMahon (Magrath Zeniths), Mason Gibb (LCI Rams), Max Russell (Cardston Cougars) and Jaxon Davison (Raymond Comets).
Carter Hansen (Magrath Zeniths), Rory Russell (Catholic Central Cougars), Keaton Josuttes (Catholic Central Cougars), Cooper Hayward (Chinook Coyotes) and Austin Bennett (Magrath Zeniths) were named to the boys Second All-Star team.
In the boys game, Team Light downed Team Dark 130-123 as Rory Russell hit for 26 points and Westrop had 24.
Cooper Hayward (16 points), Davison (16), Leif LeClaire (15) and Mason Gibb (12) also hit double digits for Team Light.
For team Dark, Max Russell led on the scoresheet with 26 points, while Carter Hansen had a 17-point outing.
Quinton had 16 points for Team Dark, Kyle Fischer had 14, Tim McMahon chipped in with 13 and Brian McKenzie had 10.
The girls game ended in a 65-65 tie.
Mylanda Miller led Team Light with 20 points and Olsen had 12.
Jenna Spruyt topped Team Dark scorers with 15 points. Also hitting doublt digits for Team Dark was Haylee Ralph and Natalie Hoyt with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
