The Lethbridge Y’s Men Miners kicked off their 2015 American Conference season with a double-header win.
The Miners topped Fort Macleod 6-5 in their first game and followed that up with an 11-5 decision to score the sweep Monday afternoon at Spitz Stadium.
In the first game, Liam Leech went 2-for-4 for the Miners with two RBI, while Matt Goruk was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Wyatt Tomalty went six innings on the hill for the Miners, allowing six hits, one earned run and a strike out.
In the second game the Miners put up a seven-run fourth inning en route to the win.
Tomalty was 4-for-5 with two RBI. Zac Aos was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Cason Furakawa was 2-for-4.
Torrin Vaselenk started for the Miners, going three-and-a-third innings and giving up four earned runs before Ty Penner came on in relief, pitching three-and-a-third innings, allowing three hits and no runs to earn the win.
“Any time you can start the season with a couple ‘W’s, you can’t complain,†said Miners head coach Jared Ruff. “Those help later in the season when you’re battling for spots.â€
The Miners return to Spitz Stadium Sunday when they host Medicine Hat in a double-header.
