The Lethbridge Y’s Men Miners kicked off their 2015 American Conference season with a double-header win.
The Miners topped Fort Macleod 6-5 in their first game and followed that up with an 11-5 decision to score the sweep Monday afternoon at Spitz Stadium.
In the first game, Liam Leech went 2-for-4 for the Miners with two RBI, while Matt Goruk was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Wyatt Tomalty went six innings on the hill for the Miners, allowing six hits, one earned run and a strike out.
In the second game the Miners put up a seven-run fourth inning en route to the win.
Tomalty was 4-for-5 with two RBI. Zac Aos was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Cason Furakawa was 2-for-4.
Torrin Vaselenk started for the Miners, going three-and-a-third innings and giving up four earned runs before Ty Penner came on in relief, pitching three-and-a-third innings, allowing three hits and no runs to earn the win.
“Any time you can start the season with a couple ‘W’s, you can’t complain,” said Miners head coach Jared Ruff. “Those help later in the season when you’re battling for spots.”
The Miners return to Spitz Stadium Sunday when they host Medicine Hat in a double-header.
