Pronghorns rugby team begins Canada West Sevens Series

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns kick off the Canada West rugby sevens series this weekend.

The Horns are in Edmonton today and Sunday for first weekend of play, looking to build on two third-place finishes in the past two seasons.

The Pronghorns will open with three preliminary games, starting at 10:12 a.m. versus the Fraser Valley Cascades. Up next will be a match with one of the new additions this season as the Horns face the UBCO Heat at 12:46 p.m., before closing out day one at 3:42 p.m. against the Canada West 15s champion UBC Thunderbirds.

Following today’s games, the top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinals Sunday with the top team in each pool taking on the second-place finisher in the other pool. The winners will face off in the final at 3:06 p.m. Sunday.

Trinity Western University and UBC Okanagan will join the original six teams of Alberta, Calgary, UBC, Victoria, Lethbridge and Fraser Valley. The eight-team circuit will once again feature three tournaments.

The second stop of the series be in Vancouver, hosted by UBC, Feb. 1-2 and on Vancouver Island in March, hosted by UVic.

The 2020 Canada West champion will be crowned based on cumulative series points.

To determine the overall series champion, the following point system will be used for each tournament: 15 points for the winner; 12 points for the runner-up; 10 points for third place; eight points for fourth; six points for fifth; and four points for sixth.
