Zone curling champs decided

The Alberta Schools Athletic Association South Zone curling playdowns drew to a close Tuesday afternoon at the Lethbridge Curling Club.

Medals were doled out in four categories – male, female, mixed and doubles, the new addition this year.

In the boys’ gold medal game, Chinook beat LCI 6-4 to capture the South Zone title.

Chinook beat Warner 10-0 in the semifinal, while LCI downed Milk River Erle Rivers 10-2.

In the bronze medal game, Warner beat Erle Rivers 15-1.

Vulcan County Central won the girls’ South Zone title thanks to a 10-9 win over LCI.

County Central beat Chinook 10-7 in the semifinal and LCI doubled Eagle Butte in the other semi.

Eagle Butte earned the bronze medal with a 13-1 win over Chinook.

In the mixed doubles event, this year’s South Zone title went to Coaldale Kate Andrews, who defeated Catholic Central 11-3 in the final.

Kate Andrews downed Claresholm Willow Creek 10-2 in the semifinal, while in the other semifinal Catholic Central beat Warner 7-3.

Warner defeated Willow Creek 8-1 in the bronze-medal game.

The doubles final was an all-LCI affair as LCI Green beat LCI White 11-9.

LCI Green beat Taber W.R. Myers Black 9-5 to get to the gold-medal game. W.R. Myers Black earned the bronze medal.

LCI is the host of this year’s provincials, taking place March 5-7 at the Lethbridge Curling Club.
